The transducer for multi-directionally movable ultrasonic motor having lambda shaped vibrators has been proposed and designed. The two branches cross at a right angle with each other at the tip. FEM analyses of lambda shaped transducer were carried out to find vibration modes for ultrasonic motor. The lambda shaped transducer has one symmetric mode and two anti-symmetric modes. The symmetric mode generates the normal direction motion of the tip. The lateral and vertical direction motion of the tip are excited by two anti-symmetric modes. The normal and lateral direction motions made an lateral elliptic trajectory. And the normal and vertical direction motions made an vertical elliptic trajectory normal to previous one. The transducer with 1 mm in thickness and 25 mm in length has been fabricated and evaluated. The resonance frequencies of the transducer was 32 kHz and 103 kHz. The tangential and vertical vibration displacement of the transducer having the lateral elliptic trajectory were $1.5{\mu}m\;and\;1.1{\mu}m$, respectively at the driving voltage of 100 Vpp and frequency of 32 kHz and 103 kHz. And the tangential and vertical vibration displacement of the transducer having the vertical elliptic trajectory were $0.4{\mu}m\;and\;0.2{\mu}m$, respectively at the same driving condition.
In this paper, we designed a wideband Tonpilz transducer, and verified the validity of the design through experiments. The wide frequency bandwidth was achieved by coupling the fundamental longitudinal mode of the transducer with a flapping mode of the head mass. Structure of the Tonpilz transducer was optimized by means of the finite element method and genetic algorithm to achieve the widest fractional bandwidth under design constraints. The optimized structure showed a far wider -6 dB fractional bandwidth of transmitting responses than that of single mode transducers. For verification of the design result, we manufactured a transducer prototype of the designed structure and characterized its performance, which showed good agreement with the design results.

In this paper, the resonant characteristic of a Tonpilz transducer with a fixed tail mass has been researched and the feasibility to utilize the transducer in that resonant frequency has been analyzed. The additional resonance is occurred by adhering an elastic tube to the tail mass of a conventional Tonpilz transducer and fixing the other end of the tube. The characteristic of this low resonant mode is analyzed by means of the finite element method, then it is shown that this mode is affected by the variation of the stiffness of the tube as well as the mass of the head mass and tail mass. Based on the analysis results, the Tonpilz transducer is designed to meet specific performance conditions.

It is known tat the echoes from the most objects differ from the incident pulses in amplitude and frequency .Especially, the frequency in echoes from moving target is shiftby the Doppler effect. it causes to reduce the receiving sensitivity of piezoelectric transducers that have definite band width. The electric impedance, whichis connected to the electrical terminals, notably changes the resonant frequency of a thickeness mode piezoelectric vibrator with high electromechanical doupling due to the electroelastic effect. Using this effect, we have developed a frequency controllable ultrasonic transducer which is mad eof multi-layered PZT disks to adjust to frequency shifted by Doppler effect. The characteristics of transducer can be obtained by using the equivalent circuit of transmission line model. It was confirmed experimentally that the center frequency and band width of the trasducer could be controlled by the conditions of the electrical terminals. These results coincided with theoretical results.

We have designed and made three kinds of FBG(Fiber Bragg Grating) Acoustic Transducer using Hopper type WDM on the use of recently developed FBG in Korea. The newly designed three kinds of FBG Acoustic Transducer using Hopper type WDM have an excellent merit of practical use with simple structure of sensors arm as well as the merit with existing fiber sensors. It was possible to detect sound waves in the range of 10 Hz to 18 kHz through the newly designed three kinds of FBG Acoustic Transducer and also, possible to detect its signal within the maximum range of 8.6 m by the use of most suitable resonance condition of the transducer. Especially, we can expect the utilization of low-frequency signal detection instead of existing acoustic sensor in the environment of electric noise and inferior condition. Furthermore, they can be developed as the high-sensibility and multi-point signal detection system through the sensor array system.

In this paper, the resonant characteristic of a Tonpilz transducer with a fixed tail mass has been studied by means of an equivalent circuit approach. An equivalent circuit has been designed to describe the characteristic of a Tonpilz transducer that has an additional resonance because of its fixed tail mass. The transmitting voltage response of the transducer calculated by the designed circuit has been compared with that by the FEA (finite element analysis) to confirm the validity of the circuit. This equivalent circuit approach produces identical results with the FEA, in which the variation of resonant frequencies and TVR has been clearly figured out in relation to the stiffness of the mounting fixture and the mass of the tail mass. The suggested equivalent circuit can be utilized to figure out the characteristics of the Tonpilz transducer more efficiently than FEA that requires much calculation time and revision of the models in accordance with the variation of design variables.

An optical microphone was developed using a dual-core multi-mode fiber block and a membrane type micromirror. The fiber block serves as a compact optical head, and the micromirror as a reflective diaphragm. The micromirror is designed to be suspended through a silicon bar connected t a frame, allowing for displacement induced by acoustic waves. The optical head is implemented by integrating two multi-mode fibers in a single block, and used to transfer light signals between it and the diaphragm. For the assembled microphone, its static characteristics were observed to reveal the operating point defined as the optimum distance between the optical head and the diaphragm. And its dynamic response was tested to exhibit a frequency bandwidth of 3 kHz with the variation of $\sim5dB$.
Ultrasonic guided waves have attracted increasing attention for non-destructive testing (NDT) and structural health monitoring (SHM) of bridge cables. They offer advantages like single measurement, wide coverage of acoustical field, and long-range propagation capability. To design defect detection systems, it is essential to understand how guided waves propagate in cables and how to select the optimal excitation frequency and mode. However, certain cable characteristics such as multiple wires, anchorage, and polyethylene (PE) sheath increase the complexity in analyzing the guided wave propagation. In this study, guided wave modes for multi-wire bridge cables are identified by using a semi-analytical finite element (SAFE) technique to obtain relevant dispersion curves. Numerical results indicated that the number of guided wave modes increases, the length of the flat region with a low frequency of L(0,1) mode becomes shorter, and the cutoff frequency for high order longitudinal wave modes becomes lower, as the number of steel wires in a cable increases. These findings were used in design of transducers for defect detection and selection of the optimal wave mode and frequency for subsequent experiments. A magnetostrictive transducer system was used to excite and detect the guided waves. The applicability of the proposed approach for detecting and locating wire breakages was demonstrated for a cable with 37 wires. The present ultrasonic guided wave method has been found to be very responsive to the number of brokenwires and is thus capable of detecting defects with varying sizes.

This paper presents the system demonstrator for an optical fiber sensor system developed as a technological evaluator suitable for generic sensric sensing applications. The new type of fiber-optic sensor employed a diaphragm displacement transforms pressure into optical intensity. Form this sensing technique, we can know the variation of source intensity, the loss of a optical fiber, and the reflectivity of the diaphragm surface. Experimental results are applied to the low-pressure transducer suitable for measuring miniature pressure.
