Ship Blocks are assembled by welding, and among them, welding between large blocks (Pre-erection stage) is used as feature of butt. In this process, local material has a experience of thermal cycle and become finally shrunk. As for inconsistency of shrunk weldments and adjacent regions, ship structure would be deformed locally and globally. Thermal distortion analyses are done for control of these processes, and methodologies capable of ship block size among them are using 2-D shell element in FEM. A shell element takes charge of plate, so it has its thickness which is important for angular distortion by welding. By the way, a butt-welding consists normally of several passes, and weldment thickness are different at each pass. If a calculated final one-time welding shrinkage is acting on the shell element whose thickness is same as it of plate, then deformation value must be underestimated. This research developed a methodology that total deformation after multi-pass welding can be analyzed by one time at shell element having original thickness of its plate. We use the SDB thermal distortion analysis method and verified by several experiment. The both experimental and analysis results showed good agreements.

The Quality of human living depends on the environmental quality of the region sustaining the life. The environmental deterioration of the modern society is due to mechanical environmentalism. For the better quality of the life, The changes of recognition and attitude on the environments are required. These changes of mind are also important in environmental education for teenagers. The 7th national curriculum, officially anounced December 1998, focuses on the change of attitude to environments and practical behavior in real life for “Environments”, the environmental education curriculum in middle school. Basic elements of the curriculum are cultivation of the pro-environmental thinking, multi-levelling of teaching materials and methods, and encouraging of student participating activity. Actually, the curriculum construction is composed of stepped-levelling of teaching and learning, reasonable contents volume, encouraging of student practice, and suggesting of evaluation standards of textbook writing. Three main subjects of environmental education for middle school consist of (1) man and environment, (2) recognition of environmental problem, and (3) protection activity for environment. Methodology of environmental education can include multi-disciplinary approaches, variable teaching methods, and continuing evaluation of student practice and participation attitude. Environmental education for teenagers relating to the 7th national curriculum focuses on recognition of the environmental problems and practice activity in daily life. The recognition includes considering relationship of human life to environment, solving environmental problems in regional context, and development of comprehensive understanding concept of the environments. For the practice education, variable teaching methods, such as field survey and application of multi-media, are needed.
The DC Motor of a vehicle may cause noise and vibration due to high-speed revolution, which can make a driver feel uncomfortable. There have been various studies that attempted to solve these problems, mostly focusing on the causes of noise and vibration and the means of preventing them. The CAE methodology is more efficient than a real test for the purpose of looking for various design parameters to reduce the noise and vibration of the DC motor. In this study, a design process for reducing brush noise is presented with the use of a computer model, which is made by using a multi-body dynamics program (DADS). The design parameters to reduce the brush noise and vibration were proposed using a computer model. They were used to reduce the noise and vibration of a DC motor and verified by the test results of a fan DC motor in a vehicle. This method may be applicable to various DC motors.

A study on the flow-structure characteristics of marine 3/2WAY pneumatic valve is essential for optimizing the performance of ship engines. It is important that the valve has desirable safety factor and reduced weight from safety and economic point of view. In this paper, flow-structure characteristics of pneumatic valve is obtained by being optimized based on the proper design criteria. The air with the pressure of 30 bar is the working fluid which is made to fill in the tack in short time. This time is defined as the filling time. On optimum design by considering the flow-structure characteristics, the approach is based on (1) the mathematical formulation of design decisions using the compromise decision-making method, and (2) the approximation technique of response surfaces. The methodology is demonstrated as the multi-objective optimization tool to improve the performance of marine 3/2WAY pneumatic valve.

Interzonal air movements are important to characterize overall ventilation performance of complicated multi-zone buildings. Tracer gas techniques are widely used to measure ventilation rates, ventilation effectiveness, and interzonal air movements. Depending on the number of gases used, they are divided into single and multi tracer gas methods. This paper deals with the comparison of the tracer gas methods in measuring air exchange rate between rooms. Experiments have been conducted in a simple two-room model with known airflow rates. In multi-gas procedure, the concentration decays of two tracer gases, i.e SF6 and R134a are measured after simultaneous injections in each room. The single tracer gas method is also applied by injecting SF6 gas with a time lag between two rooms. The data reduction procedures are developed to obtain the interzonal airflow rate using the matrix inversion, and various data manipulation methods are tested, such as data shift, interpolation, and smoothing. Uncertainty for each airflow rate is investigated depending on the parameters based on the setting values.

Quality function deployment (QFD) is a useful method in product design and development to maximize customer satisfaction. In the QFD, the technical attributes (TAs) affecting the product performance are identified, and product performance is improved to optimize customer requirements (CRs). For product development, determining the optimal levels of TAs is crucial during QFD optimization. Many optimization methods have been proposed to obtain the optimal levels of TAs in QFD. In these studies, the levels of TAs are assumed to be continuous while they are often taken as discrete in real world application. Another assumption in QFD optimization is that the requirements of the heterogeneous customers can be generalized and hence only one house of quality (HoQ) is used to connect with CRs. However, customers often have various requirements and preferences on a product. Therefore, a product market can be partitioned into several market segments, each of which contains a number of customers with homogeneous preferences. To overcome these problems, this paper proposes an optimization approach to find the optimal set of TAs under multi-segment market. Dynamic Programming (DP) methodology is developed to maximize the overall customer satisfaction for the market considering the weights of importance of different segments. Finally, a case study is provided for illustrating the proposed optimization approach.

We propose a controller design analysis for a cross-coupling control system, which is essential for achieving high contouring accuracy in multi-axis CNC systems. The proposed analysis combines three axial controllers for each individual feed drive system together with a cross-coupling controller at the beginning of the design stage in an integrated manner. These two types of controllers used to be separately designed and analyzed since they have different control objectives. The proposed scheme is based on a mathematical formulation of a three-dimensional contour error model and includes a stability analysis for the overall control system and a performance analysis in terms of contouring and tracking accuracy at steady state. A computer simulation was used to demonstrate the validity of the proposed methodology. The performance variation was investigated under different operating conditions and controller gains, and a design range was elicited that met the given performance specifications. The results provide basic guidelines in systematic and comprehensive controller designs for multi-axis CNC systems. A cross-coupling control system was also implemented on a PC-based three-axis CNC testbed, and the experimental results confirmed the usefulness of the proposed control system in terms of contouring accuracy.

The paper reports an improvement method on torque ripples of multi-pole interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) applied to a traction motor for hybrid electric vehicles. In the case of multi-pole IPMSM, the magnetic flux generated by a permanent magnet tends to leak through the bridge of the rotor without a link with stator windings. The slit design on the rotor surface was proposed to reduce torque rippling and increase the output power by reducing the leakage flux. Two design parameters for the slit are suggested for optimal design using the response surface method. As an analysis method, the 2D finite element method (FEM) was applied to consider magnetic saturation effect.
