  • CORC, which is being studied as one of the conductors for large currents, is manufactured by symmetrically arranging several strands of high-temperature superconducting wires on a cylindrical former. It allows current to flow evenly between wires and has the advantage of being manufactured in a multi-layer structure to increase current capacity. In order to apply CORC to AC power devices, it is necessary to review the material of the former, which is the frame around which the superconducting wire is wound. In the case of metal formers, they are difficult to apply because eddy currents are generated in the former, and they do not have the flexibility to be manufactured into coils by winding them with CORC. In this paper, we compare and analyze the magnetization loss caused by an external alternating magnetic field of Litz wire, which is being considered as a former material for CORC, with the results from formers made of other materials. In addition, we experimentally examine the effect of reducing magnetization loss due to an external magnetic field in CORC using a split wire made by dividing a high-temperature superconducting wire into two using an etching method, and in CORC made with a non-split wire.

  • In level set method, material properties are made to change smoothly across an interface of two materials with different properties by introducing an interpolation or smoothing scheme. So far, the weighted arithmetic mean (WAM) method has been exclusively adopted in level set method, without complete assessment for its validity. We showed here that the weighted harmonic mean (WHM) method for rate constants of various rate processes, including viscosity, thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity, and permittivity, gives much more accurate results than the WAM method. The selection of interpolation scheme is particularly important in multi-phase electrohydrodynamic problems in which driving force for fluid flow is electrical force exerted on the phase interface. Our analysis also showed that WHM method for both electrical conductivity and permittivity gives not only more accurate, but also more physically realistic distribution of electrical force at the interface. Our arguments are confirmed by numerical simulations of drop deformation under DC electric field.

  • In optimizing the layout design of a multi-product assembly environment, tile analysis of the material flow is a vital ingredient. In flexible assembly systems, assembly time is usually very short thus the transfer time is relatively more important Therefore operations sequence must be so determined, that have no backtracking operations as possible as, It is important to form cells, so that they have no intercell movement in curring much processing delay, and to arrange machines as possible as densly. This study presents a independent cell formation method considering operation sequences and machine capacity in flexible assembly systems.

  • Although equal channel angular pressing (ECAP), imposing large plastic shear strain deformation by moving a workpiece through two intersecting channels, is a promising severe plastic deformation method for grain refinement of metallic materials, its batch type characteristic makes ECAP inefficient for multiple-passing. Rotary-die ECAP (RDECAP) proposed by Nishida et al. can achieve high productivity by using continuous processing without taking out the samples from the channel. However, plastic deformation behavior during RD-ECAP has not been investigated. In this study, material plastic flow and strain hardening behavior of the workpiece during RD-ECAP was investigated using the finite element method. It was found that plastic deformation becomes inhomogeneous with the number of passes due to an end effect, which was not found seriously in ECAP. Especially, decreasing corner gap with increasing the number of passes was observed and explained by the strain hardening effect.

  • Aspect of filling imbalance that is originated from imbalanced share rate in runner is changed by material property, runner layout that are factors of changing viscosity and by injection pressure, injection speed, melt temperature and mold temperature that are injection conditions. In this paper, we made a study of runner system that is one of factor of filling imbalance and Sharp Conner Effect and Groove Corner Effect that are recently released. The study are showed that filling rate of between inside and outside cavity was influenced on shape of runner. Also, we suggested runner system for filling imbalance by adapting the two effects at multi cavity of unary branch type and theoretical investigated flow in the Shrap Conner runner type.

  • Multistage hot forging process enables mass production of various parts at a high speed, wherein, it is important to design the forging steps in an optimal way. Finite element methods are widely applied for optimizing the forging process design; however, they present inaccurate results due to the rapid change in the mold temperature during multistage hot forging. In this study, the temperature distributions of the mold in a steady state were calculated via heat transfer analysis during mold cooling. The flow stress and friction coefficient of the material were measured according to the temperature and were applied for numerical analysis of the multistage hot forging process. Eventually, the accuracy of the analysis results is verified by comparing these results with the experiments.

  • This paper introduces a numerical procedure to incorporate elasto-plastic local deformation effects in the dynamic analysis of beams. The appealing feature is that simple beam type finite elements can be used for the global model which needs not to be altered by the localized elasto-plastic deformations. An overlapping local sophisticated 2D membrane model replaces the internal forces of the beam elements in the predefined region where the localized deformations take place. An iterative coupling technique is used to perform this replacement. Comparisons with full membrane analysis are provided in order to illustrate the accuracy and efficiency of the method developed herein. In this study, the membrane formulation is able to capture the elasto-plastic material behaviour based on the von Misses yield criterion and the associated flow rule for plane stress. The Newmark time integration method is adopted for the step-by-step dynamic analysis.

  • It is essential to construct an efficient material flow system for the successful introduction of automated manufacturing systems. Automated Guided Vehicle System (AGVS) plays a significant role more and more in modern manufacturing environments, because of the flexibility and the precision they offer. However, as the size and the complexity of systems increase, the problems of dispatching, routing and scheduling of AGVs become complicated due to their independent and asynchronous demands. In this paper, we review relevant papers, and provide a new and more efficient method for dispatching AGV, named MEVTT (Minimum Empty Vehicle Travel Time) and demonstrate its performance and efficiency using simulation.

  • A multi-cylindrical hydraulic valve incorporating with an electro-rheological(ER) fluid is developed in this study. Field-dependent Bingham properties of the ER fluid are exploited to devise the valve system which features fast system response as well as simple mechanism. The fast response is accrued from almost instant response characteristics of the ER fluid itself, and the mechanism configuration is simplified since no nechanically moving parts are required. The material properties of the ER fluids to be utilized for modeling of the proposed valve system are firstly tested with a couette-type electroviscometer. The design and manufacturing processes are then undertaken on the basis of model parameters. The performance characteristics of the valve system are evaluated in terms of pressure variations with respect to the intensity of employed electric fields and flow rates.

  • An operation temperature of $Pb(Zr,Ti)O_3$ based piezoelectric ultrasonic flowmeter was generally restricted to below 200$^{\circ}C$ due to a low depoling temperature of its ceramic material. Thus, a new designed piezoelectric ultrasonic flowmeter was fabricated in order to protect from the extremely hot fluid. Its structure is optimized by a finite element method to effectively stop heat flowing along a waveguide. Various materials such as Cu, Al, SUS were examined as a multi-plate radiation shield to enhance the performance of piezoelectric ultrasonic flowmeter. The SUS was evaluated as the most effective material to enhance the performance of piezoelectric ultrasonic flowmeter. As the number of plates of the radiation shield increased, the temperature at piezoelectric transducer away from the hot fluid was constantly decreased with a ratio of 3.12$^{\circ}C$ per the plate number.
