Among the thermal analysis methods for Multi-Layer Insulation(MLI), effective emittance, diffusion MLI node and arithmetic MLI node methods are compared. The methods have been applied to the aluminum panel under the low earth orbit environment. TRASYS program is used for geometrical math modeling and SINDA program for thermal math modeling and temperature calculation. Test cases are selected according to MLI area on the panel. Temperature results are calculated and compared under the ratio of absorptivity and emissivity.

The object of this study is to find the optimal insulation design conditions of a HTS power cable cryostat. The optimum condition of a cable cryostat is obtained by varying types of MLIs, cable core weights, spacer diameters, winding pitches and MLI layer numbers. As the weight of cable core is increased, conduction heat transfer from surroundings to cable cryostat is increased. But as the spacer pitch is increased from 120 mm to 200 mm, the heat leak of cable cryostat remains almost constant. The optimal number of MLI layers is suggested. Double ply MLI is more effective than triple ply MLI and the insulation effect is best when the number of MLI layers is 36.

In this paper, the thermal characteristics of multilayer insulation (MLI) were experimentally investigated by using boil-off calorimetry method for seeking optimum standards of thermal insulation conditions. It is necessary to design the thermal insulating efficiency for applying to cryogenic instruments such as HTS power cable system. It is well known that the thermal characteristics and heat transfer of MLI are greatly affected by various MLI structures such as the number of layers and layer density, etc. However, it is difficult to know the thermal characteristics of MLI correctly. The heat leak by MLI between room temperature and liquid nitrogen temperature was measured at various conditions using a cylindrical cryostat. The cryostat consists of two guard vessels located at both end sides and a test vessel between them. The guard vessels are also filled with liquid nitrogen to prevent radiation heat leak through the both end side of the cylindrical test vessel to measure the heat leak only through MLI.

Thermal analysis has been performed to design a high-performance $LH_2$ vessel with about 1% per day evaporation loss. Analysis includes the combined insulations of MLI(Multi-Layer Insulation) and VCS (Vapor-Cooled Shield) under high vacuum. Combined insulation of MLI and VCS shows the existence of optimal location of VCS to minimize evaporation loss. Comparison of parallel-type DVCS (Double Vapor-Cooled Shield) and serial-type DVCS is also made to show the effectiveness of the system. The results indicate that the serial-type DVCS vessel is better than the parallel-type DVCS vessel with respect to overall evaporation loss. The combined insulation of SVCS (Single Vapor-Cooled Shield) with a partial MLI can give a similar performance characteristics compared to that with MLI and DVCS.

Thermal analysis of cryogenic-capable vessels with insulations have been carried out to store liquid hydrogen($LH_2$). The combined insulations of MLI(Multi-Layer Insulation) and VCS(Vapor-Cooled Shield) under high vacuum are considered in the analysis for various volumes of vessels. Vapor-Cooled Shields(VCS) are installed at cylinder wall as well as disc side of the $LH_2$ vessels. The results indicate that optimal distribution of boiloff vapor from $LH_2$ vessel into two sides of VCS exists based on the evaporation loss. As the volume of $LH_2$ vessel is increased, mass flow rate of boiloff is increased while the evaporation loss per unit volume is decreased.

One of the most feasible solution for reducing the excessive energy consumption and carbon dioxide emission is usage of more efficient fuel such as hydrogen. As is well known, there are three viable technologies for storing hydrogen fuel: compressed gas, metal hydride absorption, and cryogenic liquid. In these technologies, the storage for liquid hydrogen has better energy density by weight than other storage methods. However, the cryogenic liquid storage has a significant disadvantage of boiling losses. That is, high performance of thermal insulation systems must be studied for reducing the boiling losses. This paper presents an experimental study on the effective thermal conductivities of the composite layered insulation with aerogel blankets($Cryogel^{(R)}$ Z and $Pyrogel^{(R)}$ XT-E) and Multi-layer insulation(MLI). The aerogel blankets are known as high porous materials and the good insulators within a soft vacuum range($10^{-3}{\sim}1$ Torr). Also, MLI is known as the best insulator within a high vacuum range(<$10^{-6}{\sim}10^{-3}$ Torr). A vertical axial cryogenic experimental apparatus was designed to investigate the thermal performance of the composite layered insulators under cryogenic conditions as well as consist of a cold mass tank, a heat absorber, annular vacuum space, and an insulators space. The composite insulators were laminated in the insulator space that height was 50 mm. In this study, the effective thermal conductivities of the materials were evaluated by measuring boil-off rate of liquid nitrogen and liquid argon in the cold mass tank.
COMS (Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite) is a geostationary satellite and has been developing by KARI for communication, ocean observation and meteorological observation. Conventional thermal control design, using MLI (Multi Layer Insulation), OSR (Optical Solar Reflector), heater and heat pipe, is utilized. Ka-band components are installed on South wall, while other equipment for sensors are installed on the opposite side, North wall. High dissipating communication units are located on external (surface) heat pipe and are covered by internal insulation blankets to decouple them from the rest of the satellite. External satellite walls are covered by MLI or OSR for insulation from space and for rejection internal heat to space. The ocean and meteorological sensors are installed on optical benches on the top floor to decouple thermally from the satellite. Single solar array wing is adopted in order to secure clear field of view of radiant cooler of IR meteorological sensor. This paper presents principles of thermal control design for the COMS.
MLI(Multi-layer Insulation) is widely used to get highly insulating on cryogenic system in order to reduce heat loads. MLI for satellites thermal performance is changed by materials and laminated method. In this study, a composite multilayer insulation by application of heat stroage tank performance were compared with materials and laminated to change the way. Experimental methods of the KS C 9805 was used, the composite multilayer insulation and EPS was compared with the insulation performance. A method for analysis of experimental results is the equivalent thickness about CMI and the insulation performance were used to compare thermal conductance. As a results, the equivalnet thickenss and the thermal conductance of the composite multilayer insulation were smaller than the EPS and the thermal performance are more excellent. In addition, the configuration of the composite multilayer insulation materials and laminated method varies depending on the overall heat transfer coefficient was confirmed.

Insulating a heat from the environment is the most important in cryogenic applications like HTS cable system. Vacuum and MLI(Multi-Layer Insulation) have been widely used to get highly efficient cryogenic insulation. In this study, experiment on annular cylinder regarded as basic model of HTS cable cryostat has been performed to measure the heat loads. To investigate the effectiveness of radiation shields in cryogenic insulation system, the experiments are carried out to various number of the shields. The measured values are compared with the results estimated theoretically. The heat loads invaded from the environment was determined by liquid nitrogen boil-off calorimetry.
The high temperature superconductivity(HTS) cable must be cooled below the nitrogen liquefaction temperature to applicate the cable in power generation and transmi-ssion system under the superconducting state. To obtain superconducting state. a reliable cryocooler system is required. Structural and thermal design have been performed to design cryocooler system operated with reverse Brayton cycle using gas neon as refrigerant. This cryocooler system consists of compressor. recuperator. coldbox. control valves and has 1 kW cooling capacity. Heat loss calculation was conducted for the given cryocooler system by considering the conduction and radiation through the multi-layer insulation(MLI) and high vacuum. The results can be summarized as: conduction heat loss is 7 W in valves and access port and radiation heat loss is 18 W through the surface of cryocooler. The full design specifications were discussed and the results were applied to construct in house HTS cable cooling system.
