  • In this paper, a classifier ensemble framework for remote sensing data classification is presented that combines classification results generated from both different training sets and different classifiers. A core part of the presented framework is to increase a diversity between classification results by using both different training sets and classifiers to improve classification accuracy. First, different training sets that have different sampling densities are generated and used as inputs for supervised classification using different classifiers that show different discrimination capabilities. Then several preliminary classification results are combined via a majority voting scheme to generate a final classification result. A case study of land-cover classification using multi-temporal ENVISAT ASAR data sets is carried out to illustrate the potential of the presented classification framework. In the case study, nine classification results were combined that were generated by using three different training sets and three different classifiers including maximum likelihood classifier, multi-layer perceptron classifier, and support vector machine. The case study results showed that complementary information on the discrimination of land-cover classes of interest would be extracted within the proposed framework and the best classification accuracy was obtained. When comparing different combinations, to combine any classification results where the diversity of the classifiers is not great didn't show an improvement of classification accuracy. Thus, it is recommended to ensure the greater diversity between classifiers in the design of multiple classifier systems.

  • A simplified calculation method of natural vibration characteristics of high-speed railway multi-span bridge-longitudinal ballastless track system is proposed. The rail, track slab, base slab, main beam, bearing, pier, cap and pile foundation are taken into account, and the multi-span longitudinal ballastless track-beam-bearing-pier-cap-pile foundation integrated model (MBTIM) is established. The energy equation of each component of the MBTIM based on Timoshenko beam theory is constructed. Using the improved Fourier series, and the Rayleigh-Ritz method and Hamilton principle are combined to obtain the extremum of the total energy function. The simplified calculation formula of the natural vibration frequency of the MBTIM under the influence of vertical and longitudinal vibration is derived and verified by numerical methods. The influence law of the natural vibration frequency of the MBTIM is analyzed considering and not considering the participation of each component of the MBTIM, the damage of the track interlayer component and the stiffness change of each layer component. The results show that the error between the calculation results of the formula and the numerical method in this paper is less than 3%, which verifies the correctness of the method in this paper. The high-order frequency of the MBTIM is significantly affected considering the track, bridge pier, pile soil and pile cap, while considering the influence of pile cap on the low-order and high-order frequency of the MBTIM is large. The influence of component damage such as void beneath slab, mortar debonding and fastener failure on each order frequency of the MBTIM is basically the same, and the influence of component damage less than 10m on the first fourteen order frequency of the MBTIM is small. The bending stiffness of track slab and rail has no obvious influence on the natural frequency of the MBTIM, and the bending stiffness of main beam has influence on the natural frequency of the MBTIM. The bending stiffness of pier and base slab only has obvious influence on the high-order frequency of the MBTIM. The natural vibration characteristics of the MBTIM play an important guiding role in the safety analysis of high-speed train running, the damage detection of track-bridge structure and the seismic design of railway bridge.

  • The purpose of this paper is to analyze the behavior and to study the safety evaluation of the Unmun Dam located in Cheongdo-Gun of GyeongBuk Province, Korea. For this purpose, soil analyses including boring data, geophysical surveys and monitoring the buried geotechnical gauges, such as pore-pressure gauge, earth-pressure gauge, displacement gauge, multi-layer settlement gauge, leakage flow-meter, were conducted. In addition to these data, numerical analyses of behavior of dam were performed to predict and to compare the data which were obtained from the above methods. Since many defects, such as gravel and weathered rock blocks in the dam core, and lots of amounts of leakage, by boring analyses were found, reinforcement by compaction grouting system (CGS) has been conducted in some range of dam. Some geotechnical gauge data were also used to confirm the effects of reinforcement. Analyses of monitoring the data of geotechnical gauges buried in the dam, such as pore-pressure gauge, earth-pressure gauge, displacement gauge, multi-layer settlement gauge, and leakage flow-meter shows the load transfer of dam and the possibility of hydraulic fracturing. As a conclusion, some problems in the dam found. Especially, the dam near spillway shows the high possibility of leakage. It should be pointed out that only the left side of he dam has not a leakage problem. As a whole, the dam has problems of weakness, because of unsatisfactory construction. It is strongly recommended that highly intensive monitoring is required.

  • Recently, the deep excavations have been peformed to utilize the under ground space. As the ground excavation is deeper, the damage of the adjacent structure and the ground occurs frequently. The analysis of the retaining structures is necessary to the safety of the excavation works. There are many methods such as elasto-plastic, FEM, and FDM to analyze the displacement of the retaining structure. The elasto-plastic method is generally used in practice. In this thesis, GEBA-1 program by the Nakamura-Nakajawa elasto-plastic method was developed. The program for Windows was used the Visual Basic 6.0, and the Main of the program consists of three subroutines, SUB1, SUB2, and SUB3. The lateral displacement of the wall was analyzed by the developed program GEBA-1, SUNEX, and EXCAD, and compared with the measured displacement by the Inclinometer(at three excavation work sites). The excavation method of each site is braced retaining wall using H-pile. Each excavation depth is 14m, 14m, or 8.2m. The results of the analyses are the followings ① In the multi-layer soil, the lateral displacement by the GEBA-1 and EXCAD which is considering the distribution of the strut load is equal to the measured displacement. Elasto-plasto programs can't consider the change of the ground water in clay. Therefore, the analysis displacement was expected only 20% of the measured wall displacement. ③ At the final excavation step, the maximum lateral displacement of analysis and field occurred 7∼18m at the 85∼92% of the excavation depth. ④ The maximum lateral displacement in clay, as 50mm, occurred on the ground surface.

  • Fog deposition onto the cool-temperate deciduous forest around Lake Mashu in northern Japan was estimated by the inferential method using the parameterizations of deposition velocity and liquid water content of fog (LWC). Two parameterizations of fog deposition velocity derived from field experiments in Europe and numerical simulations using a detailed multi-layer atmosphere-vegetation-soil model were tested. The empirical function between horizontal visibility (VIS) and LWC was applied to produce hourly LWC as an input data for the inferential method. Weekly mean LWC computed from VIS had a good correlation with LWC sampled by an active string-fog collector. By considering the enhancement of fog deposition due to the edge effect, fog deposition calculated by the inferential method using two parameterizations of deposition velocity agreed with that computed from throughfall data. The results indicated that the inferential method using the current parameterizations of deposition velocity and LWC can provide a rough estimation of water input due to fog deposition onto cool-temperature deciduous forests. Limitations of current parameterizations of deposition velocity related to wind speed, evaporation loss of rain and fog droplets intercepted by tree canopies, and leaf area index were discussed.

  • This research is to observe the shoreline changes in Jinha beach over the 50 years with aerial photographs and satellite images. The shoreline image feature was retrieved from the corrected images using wet and dry techniques and analyzed by DSAS from the statistical point of view. From 1967 to 1992, the mouth of Hoeya River was severely blocked and the northern shoreline off Jinha beach was eroded. The blockade of river mouth seemed to have been eased along with the completion of the dike, but soil continued to be deposited along the high sea away from the river month. Compared to the past, a layer of sediment has been formed off the northern coastline while the southern coastline has eroded. At least in the region subject to this research, the construction of a training dike is to blame. On top of that, a mere combination of dredges and artificial nourishment is not enough to take under control the changing shorelines properly. Thus, it is necessary to devise a more fundamental solution by taking into account reasons behind sediment from the river area that could change the shorelines besides the costal environment.

  • This research aimed to appraise the effectiveness of four optimization approaches - cuckoo optimization algorithm (COA), multi-verse optimization (MVO), particle swarm optimization (PSO), and teaching-learning-based optimization (TLBO) - that were enhanced with an artificial neural network (ANN) in predicting the bearing capacity of shallow foundations located on cohesionless soils. The study utilized a database of 97 laboratory experiments, with 68 experiments for training data sets and 29 for testing data sets. The ANN algorithms were optimized by adjusting various variables, such as population size and number of neurons in each hidden layer, through trial-and-error techniques. Input parameters used for analysis included width, depth, geometry, unit weight, and angle of shearing resistance. After performing sensitivity analysis, it was determined that the optimized architecture for the ANN structure was 5×5×1. The study found that all four models demonstrated exceptional prediction performance: COA-MLP, MVO-MLP, PSO-MLP, and TLBO-MLP. It is worth noting that the MVO-MLP model exhibited superior accuracy in generating network outputs for predicting measured values compared to the other models. The training data sets showed R2 and RMSE values of (0.07184 and 0.9819), (0.04536 and 0.9928), (0.09194 and 0.9702), and (0.04714 and 0.9923) for COA-MLP, MVO-MLP, PSO-MLP, and TLBO-MLP methods respectively. Similarly, the testing data sets produced R2 and RMSE values of (0.08126 and 0.07218), (0.07218 and 0.9814), (0.10827 and 0.95764), and (0.09886 and 0.96481) for COA-MLP, MVO-MLP, PSO-MLP, and TLBO-MLP methods respectively.

  • The physical properties of the ocean interior are determined by temperature and salinity. To observe them, we rely on satellite observations for broad regions of oceans. However, the satellite for salinity measurement, Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP), has low temporal and spatial resolutions; thus, more is needed to resolve the fast-changing coastal environment. To overcome these limitations, the algorithm to use the Geostationary Ocean Color Imager-II (GOCI-II) of the Geo-Kompsat-2B (GK-2B) was developed as the inputs for a Multi-layer Perceptron Neural Network (MPNN). The result shows that coefficient of determination (R2), root mean square error (RMSE), and relative root mean square error (RRMSE) between GOCI-II based sea surface salinity (SSS) (GOCI-II SSS) and SMAP was 0.94, 0.58 psu, and 1.87%, respectively. Furthermore, the spatial variation of GOCI-II SSS was also very uniform, with over 0.8 of R2 and less than 1 psu of RMSE. In addition, GOCI-II SSS was also compared with SSS of Ieodo Ocean Research Station (I-ORS), suggesting that the result was slightly low, which was further analyzed for the following reasons. We further illustrated the valuable information of high spatial and temporal variation of GOCI-II SSS to analyze SSS variation by the 11th typhoon, Hinnamnor, in 2022. We used the mean and standard deviation (STD) of one day of GOCI-II SSS, revealing the high spatial and temporal changes. Thus, this study will shed light on the research for monitoring the highly changing marine environment.

  • In Korea, in general, separation distance between existing parallel tunnels was set at two to five times as distant as the diameter of the tunnels according to ground conditions. Recently, however, actual applicability of closely spaced parallel tunnels whose distance between tunnel centers was shorter than the diameter has increased due to environmental damages resulting from massive cutting, restriction in purchase of required land, and maintenance of linear continuity. In particular, when the pillar width of tunnel decreases, the safety of pillars affects behaviors of the tunnel and therefore the need for diverse relevant studies has emerged. However, research so far has been largely confined to analysis of behavior characteristics of pillars, or parameters affecting design, and actually applicable and quantitative data have not been presented. Accordingly, in order to present a stability evaluation method which may maximally reflect construction conditions of spots, this study reflected topographical and stratigraphic characteristics of the portal part with the highest closeness between the tunnels, simulated multi-layer conditions with rock mass and complete weathering, and assessed the degree of effect the stability of pillars had on the entire tunnels through numerical analysis according to changes in pillar width by ground strength. This study also presented composite analysis result on ground surface settlement rates, interference volume rates, and average strength to stress and a formula, which may be applicable to actual work, to evaluate safety rates of closely spaced parallel tunnel pillars and minimum pillar width by ground strength based on failure criteria by Hoek-Brown (1980).
