  • Multi-hop wireless mesh networks (WMNs) suffer from significant packet losses due to insufficient available bandwidth and high channel error probability. To conquer packet losses, end-to-end (E2E) error control schemes have been proposed. However, in WMNs, E2E error control schemes are not effective in adapting to the time-varying network condition due to large delay. Thus, in this paper, we propose a network-adaptive error control for video streaming over WMNs that flexibly operates E2E and hop-by-hop (HbH) error control according to network condition. Moreover, to provide lightweight support at intermediate nodes for HbH error control, we use path-partition-based adaptation. To verify the proposed scheme, we implement it and evaluate its transport performance through MPEG-2 video streaming over a real IEEE 802.11a-based WMN testbed.

  • This paper addresses the system lifetime maximization algorithm in multi-hop sensor network system. A multi-hop sensor network consists of many battery-driven sensor nodes that collaborate with each other to gather, process, and communicate information using wireless communications. As sensor-driven applications become increasingly integrated into our lives, we propose a energy-aware scheme where each sensor node transmits informative data with adaptive data rate to minimize system energy consumption. We show the optimal data rate to maximize the system lifetime in terms of remaining system energy. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm experimentally shows longer system lifetime in comparison with greedy algorithm.

  • Maintaining connectivity is essential in multi-hop wireless networks since the network topology cannot be pre-determined due to mobility and environmental effects. To maintain the connectivity, a critical point in the network topology should be identified where the critical point is the link or node that partitions the network when it fails. In this paper, we propose a new critical point identification algorithm and also present numerical results that compare the critical points of the network and H-hop sub-network illustrating how effectively sub-network information can detect the network-wide critical points. Then, we propose two localized topological control resilient schemes that can be applied to both global and local H-hop sub-network critical points to improve the network connectivity and the network resilience. Numerical studies to evaluate the proposed schemes under node and link failure network conditions show that our proposed resilient schemes increase the probability of the network being connected in variety of link and node failure conditions.

  • Multi-hop networks are a low-setup-cost solution for enlarging an area of network coverage through multi-hop routing. Carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) is frequently used in multi-hop networks. Multi-hop networks face multiple problems, such as a rise in contention for the medium, and packet loss under heavy-load, saturated conditions, which consumes more bandwidth due to re-transmissions. The number of re-transmissions carried out in a multi-hop network plays a major role in the achievable quality of service (QoS). This paper presents a statistical, analytical model for the end-to-end delay of contention-based medium access control (MAC) strategies. These strategies schedule a packet before performing the back-off contention for both differentiated heterogeneous data and homogeneous data under saturation conditions. The analytical model is an application of Markov chain theory and queuing theory. The M/M/1 model is used to derive access queue waiting times, and an absorbing Markov chain is used to determine the expected number of re-transmissions in a multi-hop scenario. This is then used to calculate the expected end-to-end delay. The prediction by the proposed model is compared to the simulation results, and shows close correlation for the different test cases with different arrival rates.

  • This paper presents an information theoretic outage analysis for physical layer of a cooperative multihop wireless network. Our analysis shows that cooperation by selecting a proper relay at each hop increases the coverage or data rate of the network. In our analysis we consider both symmetric and asymmetric network model. We also investigate the availability of cooperative relay at each hop and show that end-to-end performance of the network depends on the relay selection procedure at each hop. We also verify our analytical results with simulations.

  • Supporting video streaming over multi-hop wireless networks is particularly challenging due to the time-varying and error-prone characteristics of the wireless channel. In this paper, we propose a joint optimization scheme for video streaming over multi-hop wireless networks. Our coding scheme, called Joint Source/Network Coding (JSNC), combines source coding and network coding to maximize the video quality under the limited wireless resources and coding constraints. JSNC segments the streaming data into generations at the source node and exploits the intra-session coding on both the source and the intermediate nodes. The size of the generation and the level of redundancy influence the streaming performance significantly and need to be determined carefully. We formulate the problem as an optimization problem with the objective of minimizing the end-to-end distortion by jointly considering the generation size and the coding redundancy. The simulation results demonstrate that, with the appropriate generation size and coding redundancy, the JSNC scheme can achieve an optimal performance for video streaming over multi-hop wireless networks.

  • It is easy to install and maintain a mobile multi-hop wireless network due to its self-organizing characteristics. However it has security weakness of the authentication of mobile multi-hop relay stations. Specially, the mobile multi-hop relay network in the IEEE 802.16j has the additional security weakness caused by the requirement of backward compatibility for mobile stations of the conventional IEEE 802.16 system. In this paper, we propose a novel mutual authentication scheme applicable to IEEE 802.16j-based mobile multi-hop relay network architecture. The scheme is able to resolve the initial trust gain problem of a multi-hop node at its entry to the network, the problem of rogue mobile multi-hop node and the problem of hop-by-hop authentication between multi-hop nodes. Effectively, the scheme is a hybrid scheme of the distributed authentication method and the centralized authentication method which have been considered to be deployed in the wireless ad-hoc network and the wireless network connected to wired authentication servers, respectively. Also, we analyze the effectiveness of the proposed hybrid authentication method.

  • This paper proposes a medium-access control(MAC) protocol designed for wireless multi-hop sensor networks which is used for connecting physical world and cyber computing space. Wireless multi-hop sensor networks use battery-operated computing and sensing device. We expect sensor networks to be deployed in an ad hoc fashion, with nodes remaining inactive for long time, but becoming suddenly active when specific event is detected. These characteristics of multi-hop sensor networks and applications motivate a MAC that is different from traditional wireless MACs about power conservation scheme, such as IEEE 802.11. Proposed MAC uses a few techniques to reduce energy consumption. Result show that proposed MAC obtains more energy sayings.

  • This work investigates secure cluster-aided multi-hop randomize-and-forward networks. We present a hop-by-hop multi-hop transmission scheme with relay selection, which evaluates for each cluster the relays that can securely receive the message. We propose an analytical model to derive the secure connectivity probability (SCP) of the hop-by-hop transmission scheme. For comparison, we also analyze SCPs of traditional end-to-end transmission schemes with two relay-selection policies. We perform simulations, and our analytical results verify that the proposed hop-by-hop scheme is superior to end-to-end schemes, especially with a large number of hops or high eavesdropper channel quality. Numerical results also show that the proposed hop-by-hop scheme achieves near-optimal performance in terms of the SCP.

  • Energy consumption has become a main problem of sustainable development in communication networks and how to communicate with high energy efficiency is a significant topic that researchers and network operators commonly concern. In this paper, an energy-efficient multicast algorithm in multi-hop wireless networks is proposed aiming at new generation wireless communications. Traditional multi-hop wireless network design only considers either network efficiency or minimum energy consumption of networks, but rarely the maximum energy efficiency of networks. Different from previous methods, the paper targets maximizing energy efficiency of networks. In order to get optimal energy efficiency to build network multicast, our proposed method tries to maximize network throughput and minimize networks' energy consumption by exploiting network coding and sleeping scheme. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm has better energy efficiency and performance improvements compared with existing methods.
