Efficient Packet Transmission Mechanism for Multi-hop Wireless Sensor Networks (멀티-홉 무선 센서 네트워크에서 효율적인 패킷 전송 메커니즘)

  • In general, data packets from sensor nodes are transferred to the sink node in a wireless sensor networks. So many data packets are gathered around the sink node, resulting in significant packet collision and delay. In this paper, we propose an efficient packet transmission mechanism for multi-hop wireless sensor networks. The proposed mechanism is composed of two modes. One mode works between sink node and 1-hop nodes from sink. In this mode, data packets are transmitted in predefined time slots to reduce collisions. The other mode works between other nodes except sink node. In this mode, duplicated packets from neighbor nodes can be detected and dropped using some control signals. Our numerical analysis and simulation results show that our mechanism outperforms X-MAC and RI-MAC in terms of energy consumption and transmission delay.

An Effective Cross Layer-based Multimedia Transmission Algorithm over Multi-hop Mobile Ad Hoc Network (다중 홉 이동 애드 혹 네트워크에서 크로스레이어 기반의 효과적인 멀티미디어 전송 알고리즘)

  • In this paper, we present an effective cross layer-based video transmission algorithm over multi-hop mobile ad hoc networks. The proposed algorithm selects the most efficient PHY mode of wireless LAN multi-rate service at each node in a distributed way based on the available information at application, MAC, and physical layers in order to minimize end-to-end delay and maintain packet loss rate in tolerable range at the receiver. Finally, experimental results are provided to show superior performance of the proposed algorithm.

  • The fundamental design goal of wireless sensor MAC protocols is to minimize unnecessary power consumption of the sensor nodes, because of its stringent resource constraints and ultra-power limitation. In existing MAC protocols in wireless sensor networks (WSNs), duty cycling, in which each node periodically cycles between the active and sleep states, has been introduced to reduce unnecessary energy consumption. Existing MAC schemes, however, use a fixed duty cycling regardless of multi-hop communication and traffic fluctuations. On the other hand, there is a tradeoff between energy efficiency and delay caused by duty cycling mechanism in multi-hop communication and existing MAC approaches only tend to improve energy efficiency with sacrificing data delivery delay. In this paper, we propose two different MAC schemes (ADS-MAC and ELA-MAC) using closed-loop control in order to achieve both energy savings and minimal delay in wireless sensor networks. The two proposed MAC schemes, which are synchronous and asynchronous approaches, respectively, utilize an adaptive timer and a successive preload frame with closed-loop control for adaptive duty cycling. As a result, the analysis and the simulation results show that our schemes outperform existing schemes in terms of energy efficiency and delivery delay.

Developing a new MAC Protocol for Multi-hop Underwater Acoustic Sensor Networks (다중 홉 수중 음향 센서네트워크를 위한 MAC 프로토콜 설계)

  • T-Lohi, a MAC protocol for underwater acoustic sensor networks, has been designed to support dense networks consisting of short-range acoustic modems. However when T-Lohi is applied to large networks in which multi-hop routing is necessary, it suffers a lot of packet collisions due to the hidden terminal problem. To combat this problem, we propose a new MAC protocol which employs RTS/CTS handshaking. To our knowledge, this protocol is the first to adopt both a tone-based approach and RTS/CTS handshaking for dense underwater acoustic sensor networks. Simulation results show that this new protocol drastically reduces packet collisions while achieving good network utilization.

Pathless Multihop Packet Forwarding Protocol for Inter-vehicular Communication (차량간 통신을 위한 비경로형 멀티 홉 패킷 포워딩 프로토콜)

  • Conventional topology-based routing protocols are not suitable for inter-vehicular communication, where frequent route updates are necessary due to continuous and abrupt changes in network topology Position-based routing protocols are widely accepted to better serve their purpose in such a scenario as they do not require path discovery or maintenance. However they have to deal with the overhead of the location service and inaccurate position information. This paper proposes the MMFP (Multi-hop MAC Forwarding Protocol) for inter-vehicle communication that relies on reachability information collected from received packets in making a forwarding decision without path discovery. The MMFP is designed as an extension to the IEEE 802.11 MAC layer to ensure accuracy in its time-critical operations. This paper also presents some simulation results that demonstrate the superior performance of the MMFP over AODV in a realistic inter-vehicular communication.

  • In ubiquitous environments, the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) protocol is a typical service used to improve the quality of life for humans. The Vehicular Ad-hoc Network (VANET) protocol, a part of ITS, needs further study with regards to its support for high reliability, high speed mobility, data transmission efficiency, and so on. The IEEE 802.11 standard provides a high data rate channel, but it was designed for peer-to-peer network protocols. IEEE 802.11p also provides a high data rate channel, however, it only facilitates communication between roadside and on-board equipment. A VANET has characteristics that enable its topology to change rapidly; it can also be expanded to a multi-hop range network during communication. Therefore, the VANET protocol needs a way to infer the current topology information relating to VANET equipped vehicles. In this paper, we present the Multi-Beacon MAC Protocol, and propose a method to resolve the problem of beacon collisions in VANET through the use of this Multi-Beacon MAC protocol. Evaluation of the performance of Multi-Beacon MAC protocol by means of both mathematical analyses and simulation experiments indicate that the proposed method can effectively reduce beacon collisions and improve the throughput and the delay between vehicles in VANET systems.

  • Multi-hop networks are a low-setup-cost solution for enlarging an area of network coverage through multi-hop routing. Carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) is frequently used in multi-hop networks. Multi-hop networks face multiple problems, such as a rise in contention for the medium, and packet loss under heavy-load, saturated conditions, which consumes more bandwidth due to re-transmissions. The number of re-transmissions carried out in a multi-hop network plays a major role in the achievable quality of service (QoS). This paper presents a statistical, analytical model for the end-to-end delay of contention-based medium access control (MAC) strategies. These strategies schedule a packet before performing the back-off contention for both differentiated heterogeneous data and homogeneous data under saturation conditions. The analytical model is an application of Markov chain theory and queuing theory. The M/M/1 model is used to derive access queue waiting times, and an absorbing Markov chain is used to determine the expected number of re-transmissions in a multi-hop scenario. This is then used to calculate the expected end-to-end delay. The prediction by the proposed model is compared to the simulation results, and shows close correlation for the different test cases with different arrival rates.

Power-efficient MAC protocol for energy harvesting wireless sensor networks (에너지하베스팅 무선센서네트워크를 위한 전력효율적인 매체접근제어 프로토콜)

  • In order to reduce end-to-end delay in EH-WSN (energy harvestin wireless sensor netowk), medium access control protocols using multi-hop routing technique have been studied. In a real environment, there are many situations where it is difficult to harvest enough energy than the energy consumed. Therefore, it is required to design a MAC protocol that allows nodes to reliably relay data without exhausting power in multi-hop transmission. In this paper, we propose a power-efficient MAC protocol that can select the relay node according to the residual power and the energy collection rate to increase network lifetime.

Multi-hop Packet Relay MAC Protocol Considering Channel Conditions in UWB-based WPANs (UWB 기반의 WPAN에서 채널 상태를 고려한 다중 홉 중계 방식의 MAC 프로토콜)

  • Ultra wide band (UWB) technology will be applied in the high rare wireless personal area networks (WPANs) for its high rate, low power, and innate immunity to multipath fading. In this paper, a power aware multi-hop packet relay MAC protocol in UWB based WPANs is proposed and a power aware path status factor (PAPSF), which is derived from SINR and power resource condition of each device, is used to select a suitable relay node. Compared with relaying by piconet coordinator (PNC), which is easily chosen by other ad hoc routing protocol, the new scheme can achieve hi임or throughput, decrease the time required for transmitting high power signal and we can easily distribute the battery power consumption from PNC to other devices in the piconet to prevent the PNC device using up its battery too fast and finally avoid PNC handover too frequently.
