This paper presents both experimental and numerical studies regarding nozzles used for the SI engine application, particularly for the intake-port fuel injection type. The atomization mechanism of the multi-hole plate nozzle was investigated experimentally. It was found that the nozzle design added turbulence into the liquid-film jet and the jet disintegrated rapidly. Based on the results, various plate types for the nozzle were developed and tested; six hole nozzle for liquid jet interaction, plate-type nozzle with flat duct channel, and the simpler structured nozzle. The spray characteristics of the prototype nozzles were examined experimentally while the internal flow of the nozzle was investigated computationally. It was shown that turbulent liquid-film was injected and atomization quality was improved by controlling the internal flow condition of the plate-type nozzle.
In this study, to increase the mixing between flue gas and reducing agent, new shapes of $NH_3$ ejection nozzles are designed and experimentally and numerically tested. The nozzles have six holes perpendicular to the ambient flue gas flow and the tilting angle between direction of ambient flow and the hole axis is varied. To evaluate the mixing efficiency of the proposed nozzles, numerical and experimental tests are applied to several flow conditions comparing with single hole nozzle, which is commonly used in conventional SCR process. From the results the nozzle with tilted multi-holes has the large region of high turbulent intensity compared with conventional single hole nozzle. This is originated from the high vorticity near the upstream of the jet flow issuing from the hole. The high turbulent intensity and vorticity magnitude lead to enhanced mixing between flue gas and reducing agent. Hence, the most suitable moral ratio between NOx and reducing agent for the catalytic reaction can be obtained on behalf of the intensified scalar mixing within shorter physical mixing length.

Multi-dimensional combustion analysis and experiment has been carried out to investigate the effects of the injector nozzle hole diameter and number on the NOx formation and fuel consumption in HYUNDAI HiMSEN engine. The behavior of spray and combustion phenomena in diesel engine was examined by FIRE code. Wave breakup and Zeldovich models were adopted to describe the atomization characteristics and NOx formation. Wallfilm model suggested by Mundo, et al. and auto-ignition model suggested by Theobald and Cheng were adopted to investigate the spray-wall interaction characteristics and ignition delay. The information of spray angle and spray tip penetration length was extracted from fuel spray visualization experiment and the fuel injection rate profile was extracted from fuel injection system experiment as an input and verification data for the combustion analysis. Next, the nine different nozzle configurations were simulated to evaluate the effect of injector hole diameter and number on the NOx formation and fuel consumption.
A multi-dimensioanl model is being increasingly used to predict the thermo-flow field in the gas turbine combustor. This article addresses an integrated survey of modeling of the liquid spray formation and fuel distribution in gas turbine with high-shear nozzle/swirler assembly. The processes of concern include breakup of a liquid jet injected through a hole type orifice into air stream, spray-wall interaction and spray-film interaction, breakup of liquid sheet into ligaments and droplet,5, and secondary droplet breakup. Atomization of liquid through hole nozzle is described using a liquid blobs model and hybrid model of Kelvin-Helmholtz wave and Rayleigh-Taylor wave. The high-speed viscous liquid sheet atomization on the pre-filmer is modeled by a linear stability analysis. Spray-wall interaction model and liquid film model over the wall surface are also considered.

This study describes the analysis results of unsteady cavitating flows behavior inside nozzle of the prototype piezo-driven injector. This piezo-driven injector has been recognised as one of the next generation diesel injector due to a higher driven efficiency than the conventional solenoid-driven injector. The three dimensional geometry model along the central cross-section regarding of one injection hole has been used to simulate the cavitating flows for injection time by at fully transient simulation with cavitation model. The cavitation model incorporates many of the fundamental physical processes assumed to take place in cavitating flows. The simulations performed were both fully transient and 'pseudo' steady state, even if under steady state boundary conditions. We could analyze the effect the pressure drop to the sudden acceleration of fuel, which is due to the fastest response of needle, on the degree of cavitation existed in piezo-driven injector nozzle

The effect of injector geometries including the injection angle and number of nozzle holes on homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engine combustion has been investigated in an automotive-size single-cylinder diesel engine. The HCCI engine has advantages of simultaneous reduction of PM and NOx emissions by achieving the spatially homogenous distribution of diesel fuel and air mixture, which results in no fuel-rich zones and low combustion temperature. To make homogeneous mixture in a direct-injection diesel engine, the fuel is injected at early timing. The early injection guarantees long ignition delay period resulting in long mixing period to form a homogeneous mixture. The wall-impingement of the diesel spray is a serious problem in this type of application. The impingement occurs due to the low in-cylinder density and temperature as the spray penetrates too deep into the combustion chamber. A hole-type injector (5 holes) with smaller angle ($100^{\circ}$) than the conventional one ($150^{\circ}$) was applied to resolve this problem. The multi-hole injector (14 holes) was also tested to maximize the atomization of diesel fuel. The macroscopic spray structure was visualized in a spray chamber, and the spray penetration was analyzed. Moreover, the effect of injector geometries on the power output and exhaust gases was tested in a single-cylinder diesel engine. Results showed that the small injection angle minimizes the wall-impingement of diesel fuel that results in high power output and low PM emission. The multi-hole injector could not decrease the spray penetration at low in-cylinder pressure and temperature, but still showed the advantages in atomization and premixing.

When vortex tubes are applied to enhance the coefficient of performance of refrigeration system, the smaller one is preferable. However, the existing vortex generator with a nozzle hole diameter of 0.5mm was not suitable due to chocking of the nozzle hole. Therefore, experimental investigation was made to find an appropriate geometry of vortex generator, which could give a comparable effect of energy separation to commercial ones without chocking problem. The tested vortex generators were tangential and spiral types, which had single inducing channel with larger cross-sectional area than that of conventional multi-hole ones. The experimental result showed that the performance of the spiral type was better than that of the tangential one. As a small size of spiral one, the diameter of cold-end orifice is proposed to an half of tube diameter for the application to refrigeration system, while cold mass fraction ratio is 0.5∼0.6 for a desirable operation.

Most diesel injector, which is currently used in high-pressure common rail fuel injection system of diesel engine, is driven by the solenoid coil energy for its needle movement. The main disadvantage of this solenoid-driven injector is a high power consumption, high power loss through solenoid coil and relatively fixed needle response's problem. In this study, a prototype piezo-driven injector, as a new injector mechanism driven by piezoelectric energy based on the concept of inverse piezo-electric effect, has been designed and fabricated to know the effect of piezo-driven injection processes on the diesel spray structure and internal nozzle flow. Firstly we investigated the spray characteristics in a constant volume chamber pressurized by nitrogen gas using the back diffusion light illumination method for high-speed temporal photography and also analyzed the inside nozzle flow by a fully transient simulation with cavitation model using VOF(volume of fraction) method. The numerical calculation has been performed to simulate the cavitating flow of 3-dimensional real size single hole nozzle along the injection duration. Results were compared between a conventional solenoid-driven injector and piezo-driven injector, both equipped with the same micro-sac multi-hole injection nozzle. The experimental results show that the piezo-driven injector has short injection delay and a faster spray development and produces higher injection velocity than the solenoid-driven injector. And the predicted simulation results with the degree of cavitation's generation inside nozzle for faster needle response In a piezo-driven injector were reflected to spray development in agreement with the experimental spray images.

The injection nozzle of an electro-hydraulic injector is being opened and closed by movement of a injector's needle which is balanced by pressure at the nozzle seat and at the needle control chamber, at the opposite end of the needle. In this study, the effects of needle movement in a piezo-driven injector on unsteady cavitating flows behavior inside nozzle were investigated by cavitation numerical model based on the Eulerian-Lagrangian approach. Aimed at simulating the 3-D two-phase flow behavior, the three dimensional geometry model along the central cross-section regarding of one injection hole with real design data of a piezo-driven diesel injector has been used to simulate the cavitating flows for injection time by at fully transient simulation with cavitation model. The cavitation model incorporates many of the fundamental physical processes assumed to take place in cavitating flows. As this research results, we found that it could analyze the effect the pressure drop to the sudden acceleration of fuel, which is due to the fastest response of needle, on the degree of cavitation existed in piezo-driven injector nozzle.
