In this paper, we implement a navigation software of a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receiver based on a commercial purpose GNSS software receiver platform and verify its performance by performing experimental tests for various GNSS signals available in Korea region. The SX3, employed in this paper, is composed of an application program and a Radio Frequency (RF) frontend, and can capture and process multi-constellation and multi-frequency GNSS signals. All the signal processing procedure of SX3 is accessible by the receiver software designer. In particular for an easy research and development, the Application Programing Interface (API) of the SX3 has a flexible architecture to upgrade or change the existing software program, equipped with a real-time monitoring function to monitor all the API executions. Users can easily apply and experiment with the developed algorithms using a form of Dynamic Link Library (DLL) files. Thus, by utilizing this flexible architecture, the cost and effort to develop a GNSS receiver can be greatly reduced.

This paper presents a multi-frequency and multi-constellation Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signal generator that simulates intermediate frequency level digital signal samples for testing GNSS receivers. GNSS signal generators are ideally suited for testing the performance of GNSS receivers and algorithms under development in the laboratory for specific user locations and environments. The proposed GNSS signal generator features a fully-reconfigurable structure with the ability to adjust signal parameters, which is beneficial to generate desired signal characteristics for multiple scenarios including multi-constellation and frequencies. Successful signal acquisition, tracking, and navigation are demonstrated on a verified Software Defined Radio (SDR) in this study. This work has implications for future studies and advances the research and development of new GNSS signals.
In this paper, a fully reconfigurable Software Defined Radio (SDR) for multi-constellation and multi-frequency Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers is presented. The reconfigurability with respect to the data structure, variability of signal and receiver parameters, and receiver's internal functionality is presented. The configuration file, that is modified to lead to an entirely different operation of the SDR in response to specific target signal scenarios, directly determines the operating characteristics of the SDR. In this manner, receiver designers can effectively reduce the effort to develop many different combinations of multi-constellation and/or multi-frequency GNSS receivers. Finally, the implementation of the presented fully reconfigurable SDR is included with the experimental processing results such as acquisition, tracking, navigation for the received signals in the realistic fields.
In this paper, we propose an efficient satellite selection method for multi-constellation GNSS. The number of visible satellites has increased dramatically recently due to multi-constellation GNSS. By the increased availability, the overall GNSS performance can be improved. Whereas, due to the increase of the number of visible satellites, the computational burden in implementing advanced processing such as integer ambiguity resolution and fault detection can be increased considerably. As widely known, the optimal satellite selection method requires very large computational burden and its real-time implementation is practically impossible. To reduce computational burden, several sub-optimal but efficient satellite selection methods have been proposed recently. However, these methods are prone to the local optimum problem and do not fully utilize the information redundancy between different constellation systems. To solve this problem, the proposed method utilizes the inter-system biases and geometric assignments. As a result, the proposed method can be implemented in real-time, avoids the local optimum problem, and does not exclude any single-satellite constellation. The performance of the proposed method is compared with the optimal method and two popular sub-optimal methods by a simulation and an experiment.

Many studies have been performed since the introduction of GPS in Korea. As a result, positioning using GNSS was fully proposed. On the other hand, most of these studies focused on accuracy but analytical studies on the GNSS status and the national GNSS infrastructure of Korea are lacking. In this study, the status of multi-constellation GNSS and National Geographic Information Institute's CORS (Continuous Operating Reference Station) were identified for the benefit and direction of GNSS infrastructure enhancement. As a result, it has been operating Multi-constellation GNSS, such as GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, COMPASS, and QZSS for surveying. In addition, improvement was presented by the number of satellites, precision, PDOP, etc. through the experiment about VRS and RTK using Multi-constellation GNSS. Upgrading the infrastructure for satellite surveying was identified as a priority consideration. In the future, if a Multi-constellation GNSS service is possible in VRS service, the satisfaction of public administration service will improve, which will contribute greatly to the advancement of a surveying infrastructure.

Due to the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) modernization, recently launched GNSS satellites transmit signals at various frequency bands such as L1, L2 and L5. Considering the Korean Positioning System (KPS) signal and other GNSS augmentation signals in the future, there is a high probability of applying more complex communication techniques to the new GNSS signals. For the reason, GNSS receivers based on flexible Software Defined Radio (SDR) concept needs to be developed to evaluate various experimental communication techniques by accessing each signal processing module in detail. This paper proposes a novel SDR-based A-GNSS receiver capable of processing multi-GNSS/RNSS signals at multi-frequency bands. Due to the modular structure, the proposed receiver has high flexibility and expandability. For real-time implementation, A-GNSS server software is designed to provide immediate delivery of satellite ephemeris data on demand. Due to the sampling bandwidth limitation of RF front-ends, multiple SDRs are considered to process the multi-GNSS/RNSS multi-frequency signals simultaneously. To avoid the overflow problem of sampled RF data, an efficient memory buffer management strategy was considered. To collect and process the multi-GNSS/RNSS multi-frequency signals in real-time, the proposed SDR A-GNSS receiver utilizes multiple threads implemented on a CPU and multiple NVIDIA CUDA GPGPUs for parallel processing. To evaluate the performance of the proposed SDR A-GNSS receiver, several experiments were performed with field collected data. By the experiments, it was shown that A-GNSS requirements can be satisfied sufficiently utilizing only milliseconds samples. The continuous signal tracking performance was also confirmed with the hundreds of milliseconds data for multi-GNSS/RNSS multi-frequency signals and with the ten-seconds data for multi-GNSS/RNSS single-frequency signals.

For the purpose of improving the accuracy of Wide Area Differential GNSS (WA-DGNSS), estimation performance of ionospheric delay error which has a great impact on GPS error sources should be enhanced. This paper applied multi-constellation GNSS which represents GPS in USA, GLONASS in Russia, and Galileo in Europe to WA-DGNSS algorithm in order to improve performance of ionospheric delay estimation. Furthermore, we conducted simulation to analyze ionospheric delay estimation performance in Korean region by increasing the number of reference stations. Consequently, using multi-constellation GNSS to improve performance of ionospheric delay estimation is more effective than increasing the number of reference stations in spite of similar number of measurements which are in use for estimation. We expect this result can contribute to improvement for ionospheric delay estimation performance of single-frequency SBAS (Satellite Based Augmentation System) user.

For the reason, GNSS receivers based on flexible Software Defined Radio (SDR) concept needs to be developed to evaluate various experimental communication techniques by accessing each signal processing module in detail. In this paper, we introduce a multi-constellation (GPS/Galileo/BeiDou) multi-band (L1/L2/L5) SDR by utilizing Ettus USRP N210. The signal reception module of the developed SDR includes down-conversion, analog-to-digital conversion, signal acquisition, and tracking. The down-conversion module is designed based on the super-heterodyne method fitted for MHz sampling. The signal acquisition module performs PRN code generation and FFT operation and the signal tracking module implements delay/phase/frequency locked loops only by software. In general, it is difficult to sample entire main lobe components of L5 band signals due to their higher chipping rate compared with L1 and L2 band signals. Experiment result shows that it is possible to acquire and track the under-sampled signals by the developed SDR.

This paper investigates the most recent status of multi-GNSS, including technical features, types of ranging signals provided, and satellite constellation. Furthermore, a series of multi-GNSS positioning experiments in SPP mode were carried out to assess the achievable accuracy and continuity with an application to various positioning scenarios. A week of GNSS measurements each in 2018 and 2019 was acquired from the national geographical information institute and processed. The results show that a single GNSS-based scenario often encounters positioning blockage in the harsh operational environment, while multi-constellation cases are able to remedy this situation. The accuracy of multi-GNSS with a combination of GPS and Galileo is superior to that of other GNSS compositions due to the larger SISRE (Signal In Space Ranging Errors) of GLONASS and Beidou. Due to the different characteristics of GNSS SISRE, an issue has been raised to optimally integrate satellite measurements to maximize accuracy of multi-GNSS positioning.
