  • In the past, several experimental investigations aiming at characterizing the natural circulation (NC) behavior in test facilities were carried out. They showed a variety of flow patterns characterized by an inverted U-shape of the NC flow curve versus primary mass inventory. On the other hand, attempts to reproduce such curves using thermal-hydraulic system codes, showed 10-30% differences between the measured and calculated NC mass flow rate. Actually, the used computer codes are generally based upon nodalization using single U-tube representation. Such model may not allow getting accurate simulation of most of the NC phenomena occurring during such tests (like flow redistribution and flow reversal in some SG U-tubes). Simulations based on multi-U-tubes model, showed better agreement with the overall behavior, but remain unable to predict NC phenomena taking place in the steam generator (SG) during the experiment. In the current study, the CATHARE code is considered in order to assess a NC characterization test performed in the four loops PKL facility. For this purpose, four different SG nodalizations including, single and multi-U-tubes, 1D and 3D SG inlet/outlet zones are considered. In general, it is shown that the 1D and 3D models exhibit similar prediction results up to a certain point of the rising part of the inverted U-shape of the NC flow curve. After that, the results bifurcate with, on the one hand, a tendency of the 1D models to over-predict the measured NC mass flow rate and on the other hand, a tendency of the 3D models to under-predict the NC flow rate.

  • A new approach, Multi-Objective Design Exploration (MODE), is presented to address Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO) problems by CFD-CSD coupling. MODE reveals the structure of the design space from the trade-off information and visualizes it as a panorama for Decision Maker. The present form of MODE consists of Kriging Model, Adaptive Range Multi Objective Genetic Algorithms, Analysis of Variance and Self-Organizing Map. The main emphasis of this approach is visual data mining. An MDO system using high fidelity simulation codes, Navier-Stokes solver and NASTRAN, has been developed and applied to a regional-jet wing design. Because the optimization system becomes very computationally expensive, only brief exploration of the design space has been performed. However, data mining result demonstrates that design knowledge can produce a good design even from the brief design exploration.

  • As a fluid machinery for piping liquid in the reactor cooling system, multi-stage centrifugal pump requires the structural dynamic stability against external dynamic excitation. This paper is concerned with the finite element analysis of its eigen behavior and seismic response to RRS(Required Response Spectrum) curves in the case of SSE (Safe Shutdown Earthquake). Through the finite element analysis, the major vibration characteristics of multi-stage centrifugal pump(MSCP) are investigated and seismic qualification based on the IEEE codes is executed. The numerical results show that the MSCP used in this study has enough seismic strength.

  • Binary CDMA(B-CDMA) is a new modulation scheme that employs a constant envelope modulation scheme By quantizing the envelope of multi-codes CDMA signal into a small number of levels, the B-CDMA can reduce the peak-to-average power ratio, while preserving the advantages of CDMA signaling such as the soft capacity and robustness to interference. In this paper, we analyze the performance of B-CDMA systems in multi-path channel assuming that the spreading factor is not too small. Finally, the analytic results are verified by computer simulation.

  • Turbo Code is one of the most useful and powerful channel coding technique. It is adopted in radio transmission of IMT-2000, both CDMA2000 and W-CDMA system. The performance of this code depends on many parameters such as encoder memory size, free distance of codewords, interleaver size, number of decoding iteration, and so on. This paper describes a Multi-Stage Interleaver which is used in Turbo Codes for W-CDMA channel coding. We compare the performance of a Multi-Stage Interleaver with that of Mother Interleaver. The simulation results show that Multi-Stage Interleaver performs better than Mother Interleaver in bit error rate from $10^{-3}$ to $10^{-6}$.

  • A combined precoding and turbo decoding strategy for multi-path frequency-selective fading channels is presented. The precoder and multi-path fading channel are jointly modeled as a finite-state probabilistic channel to provide the multi-stage turbo decoder with its statistics information. Both a priori and a posteriori probabilities are used in the metric computation to improve the system performance. Structures of the combined turbo-encoder, interleaver, and precoder in the transmitter and two-stage turbo decoder in the receiver are described. Performance of the proposed scheme in fixed, Rician and Rayleigh multi-path fading channels are evaluated by simulation. The results indicate that the combined precoding and two-stage turbo decoding strategy provides a considerable performance improvement while maintaining the same inner structure of a conventional turbo decoder.

  • The Timoshenko beam model has been acknowledged as the most accurate model for representing beam structures. However, the Timoshenko beam model may give rise to significant error when it is applied to multi-stepped beam structures. This paper is intended to demonstrate and improve the modeling error of Timoshenko beam theory for multi-stepped team structures. A tentative bending spring is introduced to represent the stiffness change around a step in beams. This paper proposes a finite element modeling method in the light with the bending spring. The proposed method is rigorously compared with commercial finite element codes. The validity of the proposed method is also demonstrated through an experiment..

  • The performance of underwater acoustic communication systems is sensitive to inter-symbol interference caused by delay spread developed from multipath signal propagation. The multipath nature of underwater channels causes signal distortion and error floor. In order to improve the performance, it is necessary to employ an iterative coding scheme. Of the various iterative coding schemes, turbo code and convolutional code based on the BCJR algorithm have recently dominated this application. In this study, the performance of iterative codes based on turbo equalizers with equivalent coding rates and similar code word lengths were analyzed. Underwater acoustic communication system experiments using these two coding techniques were conducted on Kyeong-chun Lake in Munkyeong City. The distance between the transmitter and receiver was 400 m, and the data transfer rate was 1 Kbps. The experimental results revealed that the performance of turbo codes is better for channeling than that of convolutional codes that use a BCJR decoding algorithm.

  • In this paper, we present two signal processing techniques for designing binary error correction codes for Multi-Level Cell(MLC) NAND flash memory. MLC NAND flash memory saves the non-binary symbol at each cell and shows asymmetric channel LLR l-density which makes it difficult to design soft-decision binary error correction codes such as LDPC codes and Polar codes. Therefore, we apply density mirroring and EM algorithm for approximating the MLC NAND flash memory channel to the binary-input memoryless channel. The density mirroring processes channel LLRs to satisfy roughly all-zero codeword assumption, and then EM algorithm is applied to l-density after density mirroring for approximating it to mixture of symmetric Gaussian densities. These two signal processing techniques make it possible to use conventional code design algorithms, such as density evolution and EXIT chart, for MLC NAND flash memory channel.

  • This paper investigates the power allocation and outage performance of MIMO full-duplex relaying (MFDR), based on orthogonal space-time block codes (OSTBC), in cognitive radio systems. OSTBC transmission is used as a simple means to achieve multi-antenna diversity gain. Cognitive MFDR systems not only have the advantage of increasing spectral efficiency through spectrum sharing, but they can also extend coverage through the use of relays. In cognitive MFDR systems, the primary user experiences interference from the secondary source and relay simultaneously, owing to full duplexing. It is therefore necessary to optimize the transmission powers at the secondary source and relay. In this paper, we propose an optimal power allocation (OPA) scheme based on minimizing the outage probability in cognitive MFDR systems. We also analyse the outage probability of the secondary user in noise-limited and interference-limited environments in Nakagami-m fading channels. Simulation results show that the proposed schemes achieve performance improvements in terms of reducing outage probability.
