Case Study: Oriental Brewery, Co. Ltd. Vitalizing Cass Brand through Brand Portfolio Strategy

  • The case study of OB shows dramatic market dynamics between leader brand vs. follower brand similar to Kirin vs. Asahi in Japan for two decades. Almost 20yrs ago, the brand status of OB was dramatically fallen because of the environmental pollution of subsidiary company and harsh competition of rivalry brand. But OB made a ground change in its brand strategy. OB departed from the pride in its past to bet on the new. OB decided to vitalize Cass brand through brand portfolio strategy. They deployed 3 phase articulated marketing plans; Phase I, Acquisition of Cass brand through M&A and strategic segmentation/targeting (1993-2005), Phase 2 - Mega Brand Strategy through Line Extension(2006-2009), Phase 3 - Experiential Marketing focused on Young Culture (2010- present). Finally, OB restored not only brand reputation of Cass and other brands but dominant market position in beer market. Now Cass has been growing rapidly in the last 20 years achieving 50% M/S. The three phases shows the typical successful process of brand management and revitalization adopting brand concept management and S-T-P strategy of manufacturing company.

국내 의류 기업의 브랜드 아키텍쳐 및 기업 내 브랜드 차별화 전략에 관한 탐색적 연구 (An Exploratory Study on the Brand Architecture and the In-house Brand Differentiation Strategy of Korean Apparel Enterprises)

  • This study is an exploratory research on the brand architecture of Korean apparel enterprises and the differentiation strategy among in-house competing brands. For data analysis, secondary data was used. 20 apparel enterprises were used as the subjects. The results are as following. First, as a result of brand architecture composition, apparel enterprises used the strategy that initially paved the way launching several brands in a specific item category and after that diversified to other categories. Most enterprises used the multi-brand strategy operating plural brands in a same zoning. The terms for launching succeeding brands were about $1{\sim}5$ years. Second, as a result of analysing the cases which several brands competes within a same zoning, all the posterior brands had some differences from the prior ones. The most frequent differentiation factor was price. Concept, target age, and distribution channel followed. The order of the factors was somewhat different among the item categories. The differentiation strategy among in-house competing brands meant that the enterprises manage plural brands in a same zoning for the growth of whole market share instead of the direct competition among in-house brands. The results of this study can suggest a growth direction to the enterprises planning to launch new brands.

멀티샵의 점포이미지가 점포충성도 및 상표전환행동에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구 (The Effects of Multi-Shop's Store Image on the Store Loyalty and Brand Switching Behavior)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine if multi-shop's store image affects store loyalty and brand switching. Two hundred fifty females and males who have purchased fashion products in multi-shop participated in this survey. For data analysis, descriptive statistics, factor analysis, Pearson's correlation and regression analysis were used for this study. The results were as followed. First, respondents' the most favorite multi-shop was MUE, followed by Boon the shop and ABC mart. Second, store image was classified into four factors such as store atmosphere, service of store, store recognition and product variety. Store loyalty was classified into five factors such as emotional relationship, pursue of novelty, trust about salesperson, satisfaction about service, and active loyalty. Third, result revealed that 'product variety' and 'store atmosphere', 'store recognition', 'service of store' accounted for 39.6% of the explained varience in store loyalty, and 'store recognition' accounted for 4% of the explained varience in brand switching behavior, while 'trust about salesperson', 'pursue of novelty' accounted for 5% of the explained varience in brand switching behavior. Based on these results, multi-shop's fashion marketing strategy would be suggested.

호텔 공간의 브랜드화 환경 특성 연구 (A Study on the Characteristics of Branded Environments in Hotel Spaces)

  • Nowadays, space branding becomes more important since it reflects and synthesizes the diverse experiences of the consumer. The objective of the research is to present the new possibilities that space branding offers by analyzing the brand strategy and the design characteristics of branded hotels, which are being projected as constructed branded environments. By integrating the brand with visible or invisible elements of the hotel, such as unique space planning, service, and consumer experience, a branded hotel can be a good vehicle to reflect fast changing consumer lifestyles and trends; it enables the consumer to experience brands in his or her everyday life, and it conveys the overall image of the brand by considering the consumer's multi-sensual experiences. The study processed with theoretical research which is related to the hotel space and branded environment. Four brands were selected with distinct business area and brand strategy, and studied to analyze the strategy and the characteristics of the branded environment in a branded hotel. In particular, the case study attempted to evaluate the distinctiveness of the branded hotel's spatial design by comparing each brand's representative flagship store with the hotel. As a result, four characteristics of branded environments in branded hotels were identified, namely, strengthen brand image, consistent brand strategy, extend brand perception, spatialize brand experience. Armani emphasizes their consistent brand image by applying similar design methods in both retail stores and hotel spaces. IKEA, in contrast, applies not their design identity but their brand concepts like practicality, efficiency, and low prices. Pantone gives an expanded brand experience by using synesthetic sensual stimulation using their color system. Missoni mixes and composes their patterns and materials in a three-dimensional manner and strengthens design possibilities and spatiality. This study suggests specific design methods to construct a branded environment in a branded hotel and offers new strategic directions for space branding.

패션 상품군별 소비자가 인식하는 상표관계본질(BRQ)과 성과요인 간의 인과모형 차이 (Brand Relaionship Quality(BRQ) Perceived by Fashion Product Consumers and Its Performance Variables for Fashion Product Types)

  • The purpose of this research is to analyze the difference of Structural Equation Model which shows the path between BRQ and its performance variables according to purchase product types-fashion brand types, clothing item groups. The subjects were women in their 20s to 40s living in Seoul and Metropolitan areas, and 482 copies of questionnaire were analyzed. Multi-Group Analysis of AMOS 5.0 Package was used to investigate structural equation model according to fashion brand types and clothing item groups. The results of this study were as follows. As for fashion brand types, there appeared to be significant differences between high price brand type and medium-low price brand type for three paths, namely brand satisfaction to brand loyalty, BRQ to brand attitude, and brand attitude to brand loyalty. However the verification of structural equation model according to clothing item groups showed no significant differences between formal wear and informal wear. Consequently, BRQ was proved to affect brand satisfaction and brand loyalty, and brand satisfaction was the important intermediate variable between BRQ and brand loyalty. As consumers were likely to show the difference of structural equation model according to the price of purchase goods, differencial marketing strategy would be suggested.

Assessing the Impact of Network Effects on Brand Choice in the Growth Market: A Multi-Brand Diffusion Model

  • This study investigates network effects to measure how strongly the early adopters affect the brand choice of the potential consumer. By using the Gumbel-Hougaard (GH) copula, this study checks the magnitude of network effects varied from country to country. To consider consumer heterogeneity and network effects in the growth market, this study proposes the multi-brand Gamma/Shifted-Gompertz (m-G/SG) model based on the GH copula. Out of eighteen Western European cellular phone market data and South Korea smartphone data sets, the m-G/SG model provides an improvement in the estimation accuracy over the Libai, Muller, and Peres model. The results show that network effects enhance (i) the polarization of brand choice probabilities as time elapses; (ii) the dominance of the more preferred and the earlier entered brand; and (iii) the deceleration of category-level diffusion. Potential followers can analyze their relationship with earlier entrants through the m-G/SG model and also establish an optimal market entry strategy.

브랜드 아이덴티티 기반 OSMU 전략 모델의 타당성 연구 : <해리포터 (Harry Potter)>를 중심으로 (A Validity Study on Brand Identity-based Strategy Model for Culture Content's One Source Multi Use : A Case Study on )

  • 브랜드 연구자들은 브랜드 마케팅과 관련된 모든 의사결정은 특정 브랜드의 브랜드 아이덴티티(brand identity)를 기반으로 이루어져야 한다고 주장한다. 본 연구는, 연구자들의 논의에 근거하여 문화콘텐츠 OSMU는 콘텐츠가 창출하는 부가가치를 극대화시키기 위한 마케팅 활동이며, 모든 OSMU관련 의사결정은 특정 콘텐츠의 브랜드 아이덴티티를 중심으로 이루어져야 한다고 주장한 '브랜드 아이덴티티 기반 문화콘텐츠 OSMU 전략모델'의 타당성을 검증하고자 하였다. 연구목적 달성을 위해, 성공한 문화콘텐츠이자 막대한 브랜드 가치를 지닌 파워브랜드로 평가되는 <해리포터>를 조사대상으로 선정, 브랜드 아이덴티티를 반영한 캐릭터 상품과 그렇지 않은 상품에 대한 소비자 태도 및 브랜드 자산의 차이를 설문조사를 통해 측정하였다. 조사 결과, 소비자들은 <해리포터>의 브랜드 아이덴티티인 '마법, 선악대결, 용기'가 반영된 상품에 대해서 더욱 호감을 느끼며, 품질이 좋은 것으로 인식한다는 것을 확인하였다. 이는 브랜드 아이덴티티의 효과적인 전달에 초점을 맞춘 OSMU 전략이 문화콘텐츠의 부가가치 극대화에 기여한다는 브랜드 아이덴티티 기반 OSMU 전략모델의 주장과 일치하는 결과이다. 하지만, 브랜드 아이덴티티를 반영한 캐릭터 상품이 브랜드 자산에 미치는 영향을 측정한 결과, <해리포터>에 대한 소비자 인지도, 충성도, 지각된 품질은 상대적으로 높았으나, 그 차이가 통계적으로 유의미하지는 않았고, 그에 따라 브랜드 아이덴티티 기반 OSMU가 콘텐츠의 브랜드 자산에 영향을 미친다는 피드백 효과는 확인되지 않았다. 하지만, 콘텐츠의 브랜드 자산이란 지속적인 소비자들의 콘텐츠 관련 경험을 통해 장기적으로 구축되는 것이기 때문에, 다양한 OSMU를 통한 브랜드 아이덴티티의 지속적인 전달이 정기적으로는 콘텐츠의 브랜드 자산에 긍정적 영향을 미칠 것이라는 해석의 여지도 남아있는 바, 이와 관련된 지속적인 연구가 필요하다. 본 연구는 실천적 관점에서 문화콘텐츠 OSMU 전략의 타당성을 실증적으로 논의한 최초의 연구이며, 성공 프로젝트를 위한 논의에서 한발 더 나아가, <해리포터>와 같은 문화콘텐츠 파워브랜드를 구축하기 위한 방법론에 대한 관심과 논의의 필요성을 제기하였다.

여고생의 중저가 화장품 점포 내 브랜드체험이 브랜드몰입과 충성도에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Brand Experience in Mass Cosmetic Brand Store on Brand Commitment and Loyalty Among Female High School Students)

  • This study examines the dimensions of brand experience and brand commitment within mass cosmetic brand stores that target female high school students and analyzes the effect of multi-dimension brand experience and brand commitment on brand loyalty. A model linking brand experience to brand commitment and loyalty was tested, using structural equation modeling analysis. A total of 175 female high school students completed the online questionnaire. The current study extended the understandings of the construct of brand commitment by adopting a broadened five-component consumer commitment. The results confirmed that developing brand experience in domestic mass cosmetics brand stores influences consumer loyalty through various types of brand commitment. This study can be beneficial for brand managers by providing guidelines on how to establish consumer loyalty affected by brand experience through brand commitment. Especially, brand managers should consider the negative impacts of forced commitment on consumer loyalty despite brand experience within the stores not influencing teenage consumers' forced commitment toward mass cosmetic brands. The importance of habitual commitment in the relationship between brand experience and loyalty was also revealed. The results can provide a realistic blueprint for consumer brand experience and commitment strategy.

지각된 품질이 브랜드이미지와 고객충성도에 미치는 영향 -복합기제품을 중심으로- (The Effects of the Perceived Quality on Brand Image and Customer Loyalty -Focusing on Multi-Function Printer-)

  • 본 연구는 복합기 제품에 있어서의 지각된 품질 요인, 브랜드이미지, 고객충성도 간의 관계를 규명함으로써 충성고객 확보에 효과적으로 접근할 수 있는 컨설팅 영역을 알아보고자 진행하였다. 연구목적의 달성을 위하여 관련 선행연구를 근거로 연구모형과 가설을 수립한 후 산업체의 구매의사 결정자를 대상으로 자료를 수집하여 타당성 분석 및 신뢰도 분석과 구조방정식모형 분석을 실시하였다. 본 연구의 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 복합기의 지각된 품질 구성요인이 브랜드이미지에 미치는 영향 정도는 제품품질, 판매원 서비스 속성, 서비스 품질의 순으로 확인되었다. 둘째, 복합기 제품의 브랜드이미지는 고객충성도에 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 복합기 제품과 관련한 연구범위를 경영분야까지 확장하였다는데 의의가 있으며 복합기 제품과 유사한 사업구조를 갖는 산업에 있어서의 경영전략 수립 실무 및 경영 컨설팅에 도움을 줄 것으로 기대된다.

Bullsone Inc.: Becoming Leader Brand through Fast-Second and Spill-over Strategy

  • In 1997 the Asian Foreign Currency Crisis hit Korean shores. In its wake, Korean consumers demanded cost-saving solutions which will increase both the use-life and the fuel efficiency their vehicles. Bullsoneshot's effects include increases in gas mileage as well as cleaner cylinders, intakes and exhaust valves, the product was welcomed by an explosive demand from people driving older cars in an adverse economy. The history of Bullsone can be categorized as two major stages. The First stage is lunching era of "Bullone Shot" following competitor brand. The second stage is extension stage of brand and line based on Bullsone's positive brand equity. Mr. Hyun Woo Shin, formal CEO of OXY inc. and also formal vice president of OCI (Oriental Chemical Industries) take charge of New CEO of Bullsone. He energetically push the Bullsone's family brands and got a desirable results. He also setup ambitious goal : reach 100bn KRW in gross sales within 3 years. "Ripping itself free from 30~40 bn KRW sales range in which the company has stagnated in the last 10 years, Bullsone intends to be aggressive enough in marketing to reach 150 bn KRW in sales in 2013, and reach 700 bn KRW by 2018." This is the goal iterated by Bullsone's top executive team.
