  • We propose a surface modeling method using multi-laser lining. We can acquire 3D surface by analyzing projected laser lines on object. The laser lines reflect the surface curvature. In this paper, we show two novel approaches to reconstruct 3D shape of moving object. One is used for robust laser line extraction, and the other for registration between 3D shapes.

  • Surface functionalization of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) was carried out by means of acid treatment. The presence of oxygen functional groups on the surface of acid-treated MWNTs was confirmed with the aid of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray spectroscopy. In addition, carboxylic groups generally formed on the surface of acid-treated MWNTs, and the dispersion was increased by the duration of the acid treatment. The zeta-potential indicated the surface charge transfer and the dispersion of MWMTs. Morphological characteristics of acid-treated MWNTs were also observed using a transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Raman analysis, which was revealed the significantly unchanged morphologies of MWNTs by acid treatment. The hydrogen adsorption capacity of the MWNTs was evaluated by means of adsorption isotherms at 77 K/1 atm. The hydrogen storage capacity was dependent upon the acid treatment conditions and the formation of oxygen functional groups on the MWNT surfaces. The latter have an important effect on the hydrogen storage capacity.

  • The evaluation of Single or multi-degregation of concrete coated by high performance surface penetration agency was examined through various tests, i.e., carbonation, absorption, carbonation + chloride ion and carbonation + chemical solution according to various high performance surface penetration agencies and various compressive strengths of base concrete. The 2 types of high performance surface penetration agencies were used i.e., inorganic and alcohol soluble. And 2 types of compressive strength of base concrete were used such as 21 30. MPa. The characteristics of concrete coated high performance surface penetration agency was more improved than that of non-coated concrete, and especially, water soluble inorganic agency was most effective. And if compressive strength of base concrete was low, the improved effects would be larger.

  • Remote-sensing observation is one of the observation methods that provide valuable information, such as composition and surface physical conditions of solar system objects. The Hayabusa spacecraft succeeded in the first sample returning from a near-Earth asteroid, (25143) Itokawa. It has established a ground truth technique to connect between ordinary chondrite meteorites and S-type asteroids. One of the scientific observation instruments that Hayabusa carried, Asteroid Multi-band Imaging Camera(AMICA) has seven optical-near infrared filters (ul, b, v, w, x, p, and zs), taking more than 1400 images of Itokawa during the rendezvous phase. The reflectance of planetary body can provide valuable information of the surface properties, such as the optical aspect of asteroid surface at near zero phase angle (i.e. Sun-asteroid-observer's angle is nearly zero), light scattering on the surface, and surface roughness. However, only little information of the phase angle dependences of the reflectance of the asteroid is known so far. In this study, we investigated the phase angle dependences of Itokawa's surface to understand the surface properties in the solar phase angle of $0^{\circ}-40^{\circ}$ using AMICA images. About 700 images at the Hayabusa rendezvous phase were used for this study. In addition, we compared our result with those of several photometry models, Minnaert model, Lommel-Seeliger model, and Hapke model. At this conference, we focus on the AMICA's v-band data to compare with previous ground-based observation researches.

  • The recent industrial application requires technical methods to get the cutting fluid droplet surfaces in particular from the viewpoint of topography and micro texture. To characterize the surface topography of droplet, the combination of the confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) and wavelet filtering is well suited for obtaining the droplet geometry encountered in tribological research. This technique indicates a better agreement in obtaining an appropriate droplet surface obtained by the CLSM over a detail range of surface accuracy (resolution: $2{\mu}m$). And the results allow an excellent accuracy in a measurement of a droplet surface. The combination of extended focal depth measurement configured and multi-scale wavelet filtering has proven that it can construct a droplet surface in a successive and accurate way. A multi-scale approach of wavelet filtering was developed based on the decomposition and reconstruction of droplet surface by 2D wavelet transform using db9 (a mother wavelet of daubechies). Also this technique can be extended to characterize the quantification of droplet properties and other field in a wide range of scales. Finally this method is verified to be a better droplet surface modeling in a micro scale arising in a mist machining.

  • In general, the response of bulk material is independent of its size when it comes to considering classical elasticity theory. Because the surface to bulk ratio of the large solids is very small, the influence of surface can be negligible. But the surface effect plays important role as the surface to bulk ratio becomes larger, that is, the contribution of the surface effect must be considered in nano-size elements such as thin film or beam structure. Molecular dynamics computation has been a conventional way to analyze these ultra-thin structures but this method is limited to simulate on the order of $10^6-10^8$ atoms for a few nanoseconds, and besides, very time consuming. Analysis of structures in submicro to micro range(thin-film, wire etc.) is difficult with classical molecular dynamics due to the restriction of computing resources and time. Therefore, in this paper, the continuum-based method is considered to simulate the overall physical and mechanical properties of the structures in nano-scale, especially, for the thin-film.

  • Kinematics of grasping and manipulation by a multi-fingered robotic hand where multi-fingertip surfaces are in contact with an object is solved. The surface of the object was represented by B-spline surfaces in order to model the objects of various shapes. The fingers were modeled by cylindrical links and a half ellipsoid fingertip. Geometric equations of contact locations have been solved for all possible contact combinations between the fingertip surface and the object. The simulation system calculated joint displacements and contact locations for a given trajectory of the object. Since there are no closed form solutions for contact or intersection between these surfaces, kinematics of grasping was solved by recursive numerical calculation. The initial estimate of the contact point was obtained by approximating the B-spline surface to a polyhedron. As for the simulation of manipulation, exact contact locations were updated by solving the contact equations according to the given contact states such as pure rolling, twist-rolling or slide-twist-rolling. Several simulation examples of grasping and manipulation are presented.
