  • The effects of internal manifold designs the reactant feed-stream in Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells (PEFCs) is studied to figure out mass flow-distribution patterns over an entire fuel cell stack domain. Reactants flows are modeled either laminar or turbulent depending on regions and the open channels in the bipolar plates are simulated by porous media where permeability should be pre-determined for computational analysis. In this work, numerical models for reactant feed-stream in the PEFC manifolds are classified into two major flow patterns: Z-shape and U-shape. Several types of manifold geometries are analyzed to find the optimal manifold configurations. The effect of heat generation in PEFC on the flow distribution is also investigated applying a simplified heat transfer model in the stack level (i.e. multi-cell electrochemical power-generation unit). This modeling technique is well suited for many large scale problems and this scheme can be used not only to account for the manifold flow pattern but also to obtain information on the optimal design and operation of a PEMC system.

  • A meso-urban meteorological model (Urbanized MM5; uMM5) with urban canopy parameterization (UCP) was applied to the high-resolution simulation of meteorological fields in a complex coastal urban area and the assessment of urban impacts. Multi-scale simulations with the uMM5 in the innermost domain (1-km resolution) covering the Busan metropolitan region were performed during a typical sea breeze episode (4~8 August 2006) with detailed fine-resolution inputs (urban morphology, land-use/land-cover sub-grid distribution, and high-quality digital elevation model data sets). An additional simulation using the standard MM5 was also conducted to identify the effects of urban surface properties under urban meteorological conditions. Results showed that the uMM5 reproduced well the urban thermal and dynamic environment and captured well the observed feature of sea breeze. When comparison with simulations of the standard MM5, it was found that the uMM5 better reproduced urban impacts on temperature (especially at nighttime) and urban wind flows: roughness-induced deceleration and UHI (Urban Heat Island)-induced convergence.

  • In order to meet the requirements of background change, illumination variation, moving shadow interference and high accuracy in object detection of moving camera, and strive for real-time and high efficiency, this paper presents an object detection algorithm based on sparse approximation recursion and sparse coding migration in subspace. First, low-rank sparse decomposition is used to reduce the dimension of the data. Combining with dictionary sparse representation, the computational model is established by the recursive formula of sparse approximation with the video sequences taken as subspace sets. And the moving object is calculated by the background difference method, which effectively reduces the computational complexity and running time. According to the idea of sparse coding migration, the above operations are carried out in the down-sampling space to further reduce the requirements of computational complexity and memory storage, and this will be adapt to multi-scale target objects and overcome the impact of large anomaly areas. Finally, experiments are carried out on VDAO datasets containing 59 sets of videos. The experimental results show that the algorithm can detect moving object effectively in the moving camera with uniform speed, not only in terms of low computational complexity but also in terms of low storage requirements, so that our proposed algorithm is suitable for detection systems with high real-time requirements.

  • Galaxies in the cluster environment interact with the intracluster medium (ICM), losing the interstellar medium (ISM) and alternating their evolution. Observational evidences of the extraplanar ISM stripped by the ICM's ram pressure are prevalent in HI imaging studies of cluster galaxies. However, current theoretical understanding of the ram pressure stripping (or ICM-ISM interaction in general) is still limited mainly due to the lack of numerical resolution at ISM scales in large-scale simulations. Especially, self-consistent modeling of the turbulent, multiphase ISM is critical to understand star formation in galaxies interacting with the ICM. To achieve this goal, we utilize the TIGRESS simulation suite, simulating a local patch of galactic disks with high resolution to resolve key physical processes in the ISM, including cooling/heating, self-gravity, MHD, star formation, and supernova feedback. We then expose the ISM disk to ICM flows and investigate the evolution of star formation rate and the properties of the ISM. By exploring ICM parameter space, we discuss an implication of the simple ram pressure stripping condition (so called the Gunn-Gott condition) to the realistic ISM.

  • Durability of concrete is an important issue, and one of the most critical aspects affecting durability is chloride diffusivity. Factors such as water.cement ratio, degree of hydration, volume of the aggregates and their particle size distribution have a significant effect on chloride diffusivity in concrete. The use of polypropylene fibers(particularly very fine and well dispersed micro fibers) or mineral additives has been shown to cause a reduction in concrete's permeability. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the manner in which the inclusion of fiber(in terms of volume and size) and blast furnace slag(BFS) (in terms of volume replacement of cement) influence the chloride diffusivity in concrete by applying 3D computer modeling for the composite structure and performing a simulation of the chloride penetration. The modeled parameters, i.e. chloride diffusivity in concrete, are compared to the experimental data obtained in a parallel chloride migration test experiment with the same concrete mixtures. A good agreement of the same order is found between multi.scale microstructure model, and through this chloride diffusivity in concrete was predicted with results similar to those experimentally measured.

  • Transformation plasticity is that when a phase transformation of ferrous or non-ferrous alloys progresses even under an extremely small applied stress compared with a yield stress of the material, a permanent deformation occurs. One of widely accepted description for the transformation was proposed by Greenwood and Johnson [1]. Their description is based on an assumption that a weaker phase of an ideal plastic material could deform plastically to accommodate the externally applied stress and the internal stress caused by the volumetric change accompanying the phase transformation. In this study, an implicit finite element model was developed to simulate the deformation behavior of a low carbon steel during phase transformation. The finite element model was coupled with a phase field model, which could simulate the kinetics for ferrite to austenite transformation of the steel. The thermo-elasto-plastic constitutive equation for each phase was adopted to confirm the weaker phase yielding, which was proposed by Greenwood and Johnson [1]. From the simulation, the origin of the transformation plasticity was quantitatively discussed comparing with the other descriptions of it.

  • Geotechnical sites in urban areas may have embedded structures such as utility lines and underground concrete structures, which cause difficulties in site investigation. This study is a preliminary research to establish knowledge base for developing an optimal technique for site investigation in urban areas. Surface-wave method and resistivity survey, which are frequently adopted for non-destructive site-investigation for geotechnical sites, were investigated to characterize effects of adjacent structures. In case of surface wave method, patterns of wave propagation were investigated for typical sets of multi-layered geotechnical profiles by numerical simulation based on forward modeling theory and field experiments for small-size model tests and real-scale tests in the field. In case of resistivity survey, 3-D finite element analyses and field tests were performed to investigate effects of adjacent concrete structures. These theoretical and experimental researches for surface-wave method and resistivity survey resulted in establishing physical criteria to cause interference of adjacent structures in site investigation at urban areas.

  • Bearing wall system was used extensively in most multi-residential apartment buildings in Korea. However, bearing wall apartments have the lack of architectural plan flexibility, remodelling-incompatible, causing serious economic losses in terms of construction waste. Recently, many researchers have studied the use of Rahmen structure as a potential alternative. The beam-column connection in the paper for long-life apartment housing forms connection of a Rahmen structure utilizing the advantages of steel and reinforced concrete. In addition, reduction of cast-in place concrete and construction schedule is expected by using precast concrete. Reduction effect of quantity decreased construction costs and $CO_2$ emission of key construction materials. However, verifying the feasibility of new construction method entails numerous challenges. Accordingly, the purpose of this study is to analyze the construction feasibility of sleeve, coupler, and pressure welding connections for long-life apartment building structure. A 3D modeling software was used to perform the analysis, and a real scale model was created to verify the results of construction feasibility. By verifying the construction feasibility of beam-column connections, this study will contribute to the efficient application of these methods on construction sites.

  • Many construction projects involve a plethora of safety-related problems that can cause loss of productivity, diminished revenue, time overruns, and legal challenges. Incorporating data collection and analytics methods can help overcome the root causes of many such problems. However, in a dynamic construction workplace collecting data from a large number of resources is not a trivial task and can be costly, while many contractors lack the motivation to incorporate technology in their activities. In this research, an Android-based mobile application, Preemptive Construction Site Safety (PCS2) is developed and tested for real-time location tracking, trajectory prediction, and prevention of potential collisions between workers and site hazards. PCS2 uses ubiquitous mobile technology (smartphones) for positional data collection, and a robust trajectory prediction technique that couples hidden Markov model (HMM) with risk-taking behavior modeling. The effectiveness of PCS2 is evaluated in field experiments where impending collisions are predicted and safety alerts are generated with enough lead time for the user. With further improvement in interface design and underlying mathematical models, PCS2 will have practical benefits in large scale multi-agent construction worksites by significantly reducing the likelihood of proximity-related accidents between workers and equipment.
