  • In this paper, we proposed the directional coupler using two layer microstrip substrate which is improved coupling and isolation. Modified two-layer directional coupler is the structure which is added to the one-layer on the signal line and located the floating conductor on the added layer. Also, we applied the aperture on the ground plane in order to enhancing the coupling value, and located the conductor in order to enhancing the isolation and VSWR according to S$_{11}$. As a result, proposed two-layer directional coupler has about 2 dB more higher coupling and 20 dB more higher isolation than conventional couplerer

  • A method for designing antireflection (AR) and antistatic (AS) coating layer by the use of conducting polymer as an electrically conductive transparent layer is proposed. The conducting AR coating is composed of four-layer with alternating high and low refractive index layer: silicon dioxide (n=1.44) and titanium dioxide (n=2.02) prepared at low temperature by sol-gel method are used as the low and high refractive index layer, respectively. The poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) which has the surface resistivity of 10$^4$Ω/$\square$ is used as a conductive layer. Optical constant of each ARAS coating layers such as refractive index and optical thickness were measured by 7he spectroscopic ellipsometer and from the measured optical constants the spectral properties such as reflectance and transmittance were simulated in the risible region. The reflectance of ARAS films on glass substrate was below 1 %R and the transmittance was higher than 95 % in the visible wavelength (400-700 nm). The measured AR spectral properties was very similar to its simulated results.

  • This study interrogated multi-layer heterojunction anodes were interrogated for potential applications to water treatment. The multi-layer anodes with outer layers of $SnO_2/Bi_2O_3$ and/or $TiO_2/Bi_2O_3$ onto $IrO_2/Ta_2O_5$ electrodes were prepared by thermal decomposition and characterized in terms of reactive chlorine species (RCS) generation in 50 mM NaCl solutions. The $IrO_2/Ta_2O_5$ layer on Ti substrate (Anode 1) primarily served as an electron shuttle. The current efficiency (CE) and energy efficiency (EE) for RCS generation were significantly enhanced by the further coating of $SnO_2/Bi_2O_3$ (Anode 2) and $TiO_2/Bi_2O_3$ (Anode 3) layers onto the Anode 1, despite moderate losses in electrical conductivity and active surface area. The CE of the Anode 3 was found to show the highest RCS generation rate, whereas the multi-junction architecture (Anode 4, sequential coating of $IrO_2/Ta_2O_5$, $SnO_2/Bi_2O_3$, and $TiO_2/Bi_2O_3$) showed marginal improvement. The microscopic observations indicated that the outer $TiO_2/Bi_2O_3$ could form a crack-free layer by an incorporation of anatase $TiO_2$ particles, potentially increasing the service life of the anode. The results of this study are expected to broaden the usage of dimensionally stable anodes in water treatment with an enhanced RCS generation and lifetime.

  • We demonstrate the hybrid polymer-quantum dot based multi-functional device (Organic bistable devices, Light-emitting diode, and Photovoltaic cell) with a single active-layer structure consisting of CdSe/ZnS semiconductor quantum-dots (QDs) dispersed in a poly N-vinylcarbazole (PVK) and 1,3,5-tirs- (N-phenylbenzimidazol-2-yl) benzene (TPBi) fabricated on indium-tin-oxide (ITO)/glass substrate by using a simple spin coating technique. The multi-functionality of the device as Organic bistable device (OBD), Light Emitting Diode (LED), and Photovoltaic cell can be successfully achieved by adding an electron transport layer (ETL) TPBi to OBD for attaining the functions of LED and Photovoltaic cell in which the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) level of TPBi is positioned at the energy level between the conduction band of CdSe/ZnS and LiF/Al electrode (band-gap engineering). Through transmission electron microscopy (TEM) study, the active layer of the device has a p-i-n structure of a consolidated core-shell structure in which semiconductor QDs are uniformly and isotropically adsorbed on the surface of a p-type polymer core and the n-type small molecular organic materials surround the semiconductor QDs.

  • In this paper, a planar microstrip patch antenna is proposed using the slit on the top layer of a multi-layered structure for GPS application. The proposed antenna has a circular polarization at 1,575.42 MHz. This proposed antenna is fabricated on multi-layered FR4 substrate. The slits embedded on the top plane may yield to lower a resonance frequency and sustain a broad bandwidth. The proposed antenna size is $20{\times}20{\times}4.0\;mm^3$. The measured gain of 0.5 dBi, 10 dB bandwidth(VSWR 2:1) of 70 MHz(4.4 %), and 3 dB axial-ratio bandwidth of 15 MHz(1 %) have been obtained, respectively.

  • The color difference between original and printed copy is affected mainly by ink trapping and optical properties of overprinted ink layer. Since the general expression itself about ink trapping is affected also by the optical properties, the analysis of color difference using the ink trapping only cannot be certain. This study will show a new approaching method for optical analysis of spectral reflectance and the effect of printing sequence on color difference in multi-color overprints under the condition of excluding completely the ink trapping problems by means of using transparent film as a substrate.

  • Commercially available paper stickers, electrostatic stickers, and metal sticker generally involve process of printing on the substrate and die-cutting to peel the sticker off the release paper. Using plastisol ink and multi-layer screen printing technique, a process of non die-cutting sticker with same image on both sides was developed. It was also possible to prevent color mixing phenomena at image edge part by printing narrow lines of black ink along the borderline.

  • The effect of boronizing on mechanical properties including wear behavior and hardness of Inconel 625 superalloy were investigated. The cross-section observation demonstrated that boronized samples were composed of multi-phase boride layer (CrxBx, Ni2B), diffusion layer, and substrate. The boride and diffusion layers were increased with increasing treatment temperature and holding time. However, CrxBx layer was partially peeled off when it treated 1000℃. Subsequently, boride layer was completely separated from substrate with increasing temperature and time. A partial peeling of CrxBx layer is not noticeably degraded mechanical properties. In particular, friction coefficient and wear resistance were enhanced in lack of CrxBx phase. Therefore, these results suggest that a Ni2B phase mainly contribute to wear behavior on boronized Inconel 625 superalloy.

  • Since in vitro neural recording and imaging applications based on a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) technique have expanded dramatically in recent years, cytotoxicity assessment to ensure the biosafety and biocompatibility for those applications is crucial. Here, we report the cytotoxicity of the SPR substrate incorporating a flint glass whose refractive index is larger than that of a conventional crown glass. A high refractive index glass substrate is essential in neural signal detection due to the advantages such as high sensitivity and wide dynamic range. From experimental data using primary hippocampal neurons, it is found that a lead-based flint glass is not appropriate as a neural recording template although the neuron cells are not directly attached to the toxic glass. We also demonstrate that the adhesion layer between the glass substrate and the gold film plays an important role in achieving the substrate stability and the cell viability.

  • Vertically well aligned multi-wall carbon nanotubes (CNT) were grown on nickel coated glass substrates by plasma enhanced hot filament chemical vapor deposition at low temperatures below 600$^{\circ}C$. Acetylene and ammonia gas were used as the carbon source and a catalyst. Effects of growth parameters such as pre-treatment of substrate, plasma intensity, filament current, imput gas flow rate, gas composition, substrate temperature and different substrates on the growth characteristics of CNT were systematically investigated. Figure 1 shows SEM image of CNT grown on Ni coated glass substrate. Diameter of nanotube was 30 to 100nm depending on the growth condition. The diameter of CNT decreased and density of CNT increased as NH3 etching time etching time increased. Plasma intensity was found to be the most critical parameter to determine the growth of CNT. CNT was not grown at the plasma intensity lower than 500V. Growth of CNT without filament current was observed. Raman spectroscopy showed the C-C tangential stretching mode at 1592 cm1 as well as D line at 1366 cm-1. From the microanalysis using HRTEM, nickel cap was observed on the top of the grown CNT and very thin carbon amorphous layer of 5nm was found on the nickel cap. Current-voltage characteristics using STM showed about 34nA of current at the applied voltage of 1 volt. Electron emission from the vertically well aligned CNT was obtained using phosphor anode with onset electric field of 1.5C/um.
