The progressive collapse analysis of reinforced concrete (RC) moment-frame buildings under extreme loads is discussed from the perspective of modeling issues. A threat-independent approach or the alternate path method forms the basis of the simulations wherein the extreme event is modeled via column removal scenarios. Using a prototype RC frame building, issues and considerations in constitutive modeling of materials, options in modeling the structural elements and specification of gravity loads are discussed with the goal of achieving consistent models that can be used in collapse scenarios involving successive loss of load-bearing columns at the lowest level of the building. The role of the floor slabs in mobilizing catenary action and influencing the progressive collapse response is also highlighted. Finally, an energy-based approach for identifying the proximity to collapse of regular multi-story buildings is proposed.
In this research, a multi-objective optimal design of a scroll compressor lower frame was approximated, and the design parameters of the lower frame were selected. The sensitivity of the design parameters was induced through a parameter analysis, and the thickness was determined to be the most sensitive parameter to stress and deflection. All of the design parameters regarding the mass are sensitive factors. It was formulated for the problem about stress and deflection to be caused by the axial load. The sensitivity of the design variables was determined using an orthogonal array for the parameter analysis. Using the central composite and D-optimal designs, a second polynomial approximation of the objective and constraint functions was formulated and the accuracy was verified through an R-square. These functions were applied to the optimal design program (NSGA-II). Through a CAE analysis, the effectiveness of the central composite and D-optimal designs was determined.
In order to set up structural improvement strategy against meteorological disasters of the shading structures in ginseng fields, structural safety analyses as well as some case studies of structural damage patterns were carried out. According to the results of structural safety analysis, allowable safe snow depth for type B(wood frame with single span) was 25.9 cm, and those for type A(wood frame with multi span) and type C and D (steel frame with multi span) were 17.6 cm, 25.8 cm, and 20.0 cm respectively. So types of shading structures should be selected according to the regional design snow depth. An experiential example study on meteorological disasters indicated that a strong wind damage was experienced once every 20 years, and a heavy snow damage once every 9.5 years. The most serious disasters were caused by heavy snow and it was found that a half break and complete collapse of structures were experienced by about 70% of snow damage. In addition to maintenance, repair and reinforcement, it is also recommended that improved model of shading structures for ginseng cultivation should be developed as a long term countermeasures against meteorological disasters.

An attempt is conducted to explore the relationship between the macroscopic global damage and the local damage of shear-type RC frames. A story damage index, which can be expressed as multi-variate functions of modal parameters, is deduced based on the tridiagonal matrix of the shear-type frame. The global damage model is also originated from structural modal parameters. Due to the connection of modal damage indexes, the relationship between the macroscopic global damage and the local story damage is reasonably established. In order to validate the derivation, a case study is carried out via an 8-story shear-type frame. The sensitivities of modal damage indexes to the location and severity of local story damages are studied. The evolution of the global damage is investigated as well. Results show that the global damage is sensitive to the degree of story damage, but it's not sensitive to its location. As the number of the damaged stories increases, more and more modes will be involved. Meanwhile, the global damage evolution curve changes from the concave shape to the S-type and then finally transforms into the convex shape. Through the proposed story damage, modal damage and global damage model, a multi-level damage assessment method is established.
In recent years, along with the advances made in performance-based design optimization, the need for fast calculation of response parameters in dynamic analysis procedures has become an important issue. The main problem in this field is the extremely high computational demand of time-history analyses which may convert the solution algorithm to illogical ones. Two simplifying strategies have shown to be very effective in tackling this problem; first, simplified nonlinear modeling investigating minimum level of structural modeling sophistication, second, wavelet analysis of earthquake records decreasing the number of acceleration points involved in time-history loading. In this paper, we try to develop an efficient framework, using both strategies, to solve the performance-based multi-objective optimal design problem considering the initial cost and the seismic damage cost of steel moment-frame structures. The non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) is employed as the optimization algorithm to search the Pareto optimal solutions. The constraints of the optimization problem are considered in accordance with Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recommended design specifications. The results from numerical application of the proposed framework demonstrate the capabilities of the framework in solving the present multi-objective optimization problem.
This paper studies damage detection as an optimization problem. A new objective function based on changes in natural frequencies, and Natural Frequency Vector Assurance Criterion (NFVAC) was developed. Due to their easy and fast acquisition, natural frequencies were utilized to detect structural damages. Moreover, they are sensitive to stiffness reduction. The method presented here consists of two stages. Firstly, Finite Element Model (FEM) is updated. Secondly, damage severities and locations are determined. To minimize the proposed objective function, a new bio-inspired optimization algorithm called salp swarm was employed. Efficiency of the method presented here is validated by three experimental examples. The first example relates to three-story shear frame with two single damage cases in the first story. The second relates to a five-story shear frame with single and multiple damage cases in the first and third stories. The last one relates to a large-scale eight-story shear frame with minor damage case in the first and third stories. Moreover, the performance of Salp Swarm Algorithm (SSA) was compared with Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). The results show that better accuracy is obtained using SSA than using PSO. The obtained results clearly indicate that the proposed method can be used to determine accurately and efficiently both damage location and severity in multi-story shear frames.
Multiple pounding tuned rolling mass damper (MPTRMD) distributed in the cavity of voided slabs is proposed to passively control multi-story frame structures, which disperses the mass of the oscillator to multiple dampers so that the control device can be miniaturized without affecting the vibration control performance. The mechanism and the differential motion equations of the MPTRMD-controlled multi-degree-of-freedom system are derived based on the Lagrange principle. Afterward, this advanced RMD is applied to a simplified 20-floor steel frame to evaluate the seismic control performance in the numerical analysis. A four-storey frame structure equipped with MPTRMD is then taken for a shaking table test to verify its effectiveness of control performance. The pounding mechanism has been detailed studied numerically and experimentally as well. The numerical and experimental results show that the proposed damper is practically promising not only for its prominent control performance but also for its lightweight and space-saving. Additionally, the pounding mechanism influenced by the variable impact parameters exhibits a balance between the two effects of motional limitations and energy dissipation.
Optimization of chassis frame is performed according to the minimization of eleven responses representing one total frame weight, three natural frequencies and seven strength limits of chassis frame that are analyzed by using each response surface model from D-optimal design of experiments. After each response surface model is constructed form D-optimal design and random orthogonal array, the main effect and sensitivity analyses are successfully carried out by using this approximated regression model and the optimal solutions are obtained by using a nonlinear programming method. The response surface models and the optimization algorithms are used together to obtain the optimal design of chassis frame. The eleven-polynomial response surface models of the thirteen frame members (design factors) are constructed by using D-optimal Design and the multi-disciplinary design optimization is also performed by applying dual response analysis.

In this paper, we propose an empirical framework for modeling and emulating interference in multi-hop wireless ad-hoc networks. Wireless interference causes wide variation in the frame delivery rate at a link, and thus we cannot represent the state of the link with only two states, connected state and disconnected state, as in wired networks. We first investigate wireless interference in detail, in order to accurately calibrate the interference and identify its underlying attributes, and then we simulate the diverse occurrences and effects of interference, after incorporating the scheme into a simulation tool. Based on these observations, we devise a modeling and simulation framework with several control parameters, and perform an extensive set of simulation studies. The simulation results indicate that the proposed framework enables us to examine various attributes of wireless interferences and their effects on wireless network protocols and systems.
