The objective of this paper is to provide an improved reorder decision policy for general multi-echelon distribution systems utilizing the shared stock information. It has been known that traditional reorder policies sometimes show poor performance in distribution systems. Thus, in our previous research we introduced the order risk policy which utilizes the shared stock information more accurately for the 2-echelon distribution system and proved the optimality. However, since the real world supply chain is generally composed with more than 2 echelons, we extend the order risk policy for the general multi-echelon systems. Since the calculation of the exact order risk value for general multi-echelon systems is very complex, we provide two approximation methods for the real-time calculation. Through the computational experiment comparing the order risk policy with the existing policies under various conditions, we show the performance of the order risk policy and analyze the value of the shared stock information varying with the characteristics of the supply chain.

Managing multi-echelon inventory systems has gained importance over the last decade mainly because integrated control of supply chains consisting of several processing and distribution stages has become feasible through modern information technology. Determination of optimal inventory policy for multi-echelon supply chain is made difficult by the complex interaction between the different levels. In this paper, we investigate performance of five inventory policies (fixed quantity order policy, fixed interval order policy, compromised order policy, lead time-fixed quantity order policy, and mixed order policy) in a multi-echelon supply chain by using a simulation model constructed with AweSim simulation language. The results of the simulation study show that the mixed order policy is the best among five inventory policies in the most test problems except the case when the stockout cost per unit is much higher than the inventory holding and transportation costs per unit.
The main focus of this study is to investigate the performance of a clark-scarf type multi-echelon serial supply chain operating with a base-stock policy and to optimize the inventory levels in the supply chains so as to minimize the systemwide total inventory cost, comprising holding and backorder costs as all the nodes in the supply chain. The source of supply of raw materials to the most upstream node, namely supplier, is assumed to have an infinite raw material availability. Retailer faces random customer demand, which is assumed to be stationary and normally distributed. If the demand exceeds on-hand inventory, the excess demand is backlogged. Using the echelon stock and demand quantile concepts and an efficient simulation technique, we derive near optimal inventory policy. Additionally we discuss the derived results through the extensive experiments for different supply chain settings.
In a real-life supply chain environment, demand forecasting is usually represented by probabilistic distributions due to the uncertainty inherent in customer demands. However, the customer demand used for an actual supply chain planning is a single deterministic value for each of periods. In this paper we study the choice of single demand value among of the given customer demand distribution for a period to be used in the supply chain planning. This paper considers distributed multi-echelon supply chain and the objective function of this paper is to minimize the total costs, that is the sum of holding and backorder costs over the distribution network under the service level constraint, by using demand selection scheme. Some useful findings are derived from various simulation-based experiments.
Various inventory control theories have tried to modelling and analyzing supply chains by using quantitative methods and characterization of optimal control policies. However, despite of various efforts in this research filed, the existing models cannot afford to be applied to the realistic problems. The most unrealistic assumption for these models is customer demand. Most of previous researches assume that the customer demand is stationary with a known distribution, whereas, in reality, the customer demand is not known a priori and changes over time. In this paper, we propose a reinforcement learning based adaptive echelon base-stock inventory control policy for a multi-stage, serial supply chain with non-stationary customer demand under the service level constraint. Using various simulation experiments, we prove that the proposed inventory control policy can meet the target service level quite well under various experimental environments.
The efficiency of a supply chain can be extremely affected by its design which includes determining the flow pattern of material from suppliers to costumers, selecting the suppliers, and defining the opened facilities in network. In this paper, a multi-objective multi-echelon multi-product supply chain design model is proposed in which several suppliers, several manufacturers, several distribution centers as different stages of supply chain cooperate with each other to satisfy various costumers' demands. The multi-objectives of this model which considered simultaneously are 1-minimize the total cost of supply chain including production cost, transportation cost, shortage cost, and costs of opening a facility, 2-minimize the transportation time from suppliers to costumers, and 3-maximize the service level of the system by minimizing the maximum level of shortages. To configure this model a graph theoretic approach is used by considering channels among each two facilities as links and each facility as the nodes in this configuration. Based on complexity of the proposed model a multi-objective Pareto-based vibration damping optimization (VDO) algorithm is applied to solve the model and finally non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) is also applied to evaluate the performance of MOVDO. The results indicated the effectiveness of the proposed MOVDO to solve the model.
We consider a supply chain model with a make-to-order production facility and a single supplier. The model we treat here is a special case of a two-echelon inventory model. Unlike classical two-echelon systems, the demand process at the supplier is affected by production process at the production facility as well as customer order arrival process. In this paper, we address that how the demand variability impacts on the optimal replenishment policy. To this end, we incorporate Erlang and phase-type demand distributions into the model. Formulating the model as a Markov decision problem, we investigate the structure of the optimal replenishment policy. We also implement a sensitivity analysis on the optimal policy and establish its monotonicity with respect to system cost parameters.
Currently many companies are interested in reduction of the carbon emissions associated with their supply chain activities such as transportation and operations. Operational decisions, such as modifications in order quantities could an effective way in reducing carbon emissions in the supply chain. Cap-and-trade regulation, sometimes called emissions trading, is a market-based tool to limit greenhouse gas emissions. Under cap-and-trade regulation, emission credits are allocated to the firms and the firms trades emissions under cap-and-trade schemes. In this paper, we propose a single-manufacturer single-buyer two-echelon supply chain problem under the cap-and-trade mechanism incorporating the carbon emissions caused by transportation and warehousing activities where a single manufacturer produces a family of items in order to deliver a family of items to a single buyer at a fixed interval of time for effective implementation of Just-In-Time (JIT) Purchasing. An integrated multi-product lot-splitting model of facilitating multiple shipments in small lots between buyer and manufacturer is developed in a JIT Purchasing environment. Also, an iterative heuristic algorithm is developed to derive the common order interval, the number of intervals for each product and the number of shipments between the buyer and the manufacturer during the common interval. A numerical example is given to illustrate the savings in reduction of total cost and carbon emissions by the inventory model incorporating cap-and-trade mechanism compared to the classical inventory model. The proposed inventory model could be useful for the practical solution of two-echelon supply chain inventory problem under cap-and-trade mechanism.
