  • In this study, a multi-body dynamic model is developed for a washing machine and the dynamic behaviors of the machine are investigated. The mechanical properties such as spring constants and damping factors are measured from vibrational experiments. With these experimentally obtained mechanical properties, a computer simulation model for the washing machine is established by using a commercial multi-body dynamics software DAFUL. In order to verify the developed simulation model, the dynamic responses computed from simulation are compared to the responses measured from vibration experiments. In addition, the effects of the stiffness and damping factors on the dynamic responses are also analyzed.

  • An attitude control problem for a tethered spacecraft is studied. The tethered spacecraft is viewed as a multi-body spacecraft consisting of a base body, a massless tether that connects the base body and an end mass, and tether actuator dynamics. Moments about the pitch and roll axes of the base spacecraft arise by control of the point of attachment of the tether to the base spacecraft. The control objective is to stabilize the attitude of the base spacecraft while keeping the perturbations of the tether small. Analysis shows that linear equations of motion for the tethered spacecraft are not completely controllable. We study two different control design approaches: (1) we decouple the attitude dynamics from the tether dynamics and we design a linear feedback to achieve stabilization of the attitude dynamics, and (2) we decouple the controllable modes from the uncontrollable mode using Kalman decomposition and we design a linear feedback to achieve stabilization of the controllable modes. Simulation results show that, although it is difficult to control the tether, the tether motion can be maintained within an acceptable range while stabilizing the attitude dynamics of the base spacecraft.

  • As functional requirements of automatic office machines like printers, ATMs, copying machines are on a trend for the higher speed and precision, extensive technical advances are being developed and implemented in the industry. Media transport system is a device to convey a sheet of paper in ATMs and printers. The stability of media transport system is a matter of concern as their operating throughput rapidly increases. And defects of belts or rollers in a transport system directly affect the level of stability of the system. Therefore an automatic diagnostic system for predicting various defects is necessary for the stable operation of the media transport system. A simulation based on multi-body dynamics has been done for a feasibility study of a system design for the defect anticipation.

  • Since the power transmission line(PTL) passes through the high mountain and heavy snowfall region, it is necessary to keep the stability of the PTL. In this study, PTL is modeled as a mass-spring-damper system by using RecurDyn. The lumped mass model is verified by calculated from the simulation comparing the deflection analysis according to the sag and tension. In order to analyze the dynamic behavior of PTL, a damping coefficient for a multi-body model is derived by using the free vibration test and Rayleigh damping theory. Sleet jump simulation according to the region is performed. The maximum jump height, icing sag and amount of jump are confirmed. Also, the amount of jump and the reaction force at the supporting point according to the tension and load of ice are analyzed, respectively. As a result, it is noted that the amount of jump and reaction force are influenced more by the load of ice than by the tension of PTL.

  • In this work, an efficient aircraft landing simulation strategy is proposed to develop an efficient and reliable hard-landing monitoring procedure. Landing stage is the most dangerous moment during operation cycle of aircraft and it may cause structural damage when hard-landing occurs. Therefore, the occurrence of hard-landing should be reported accurately to guarantee the structural integrity of aircraft. In order to accurately determine whether hard-landing occurs or not from given landing conditions, full nonlinear structural dynamic simulation can be performed, but this approach is highly time-consuming. Thus, a more efficient approach for aircraft landing simulation which uses a hierarchical aircraft landing model and an extended inertia relief technique is proposed. The proposed aircraft landing model is composed of a multi-body dynamics model equipped with landing gear and tire models to extract the impact force and inertia force at touch-down and a linear dynamic structural model with an extended inertia relief method to analyze the structural response subject to the prescribed rigid body motion and the forces extracted from the multi-body dynamics model. The numerical examples show the efficiency and practical advantages of the proposed landing model as an essential component of aircraft hard-landing monitoring procedure.

  • A floating wind turbine dynamic simulation program, WindHydro, is newly developed taking into account wind inflow and incident wave. WindHydro consists of 5 modules, HDFloat for hydrodynamics, HDProp for hydrodynamic property calculation, HDMoor for mooring dynamics, AeroDyn for aerodynamics, DAFUL for multi-body dynamics with nonlinear elasticity, and interface program that connects each calculation module. A turbulent wind and regular wave load case is simulated for the 5-MW OC3-Hywind with a spar bouy platform and catenary mooring lines. The results are compared with the results of the FAST(developed by NREL). As a result, the overall system responses from WindHydro and FAST agree well although some differences in the generator responses are observed.

  • In this study, we aim to converge a technology for analyzing the hydraulic circuit of a loading arm with an- other one for analyzing multi-body dynamics by utilizing analysis software SimulationX. Further, this study intends to overcome the limitations of the existing technology for analyzing a hydraulic circuit with a variation at the rotation center of the moving mass and the difficulty of incorporating the behavior in a gravity field. First, the specifications of the hydraulic circuit components were reflected in an analysis model to secure reliability. Hydraulic circuit modeling was then performed using a single analysis model with a verified reliability. Subsequently, the multi-body system (MBS) model of the loading arm was formed. Finally, the analysis model of the hydraulic circuit and the MBS model were converged to check if the circuit analysis result was exactly reflected in the MBS model. The convergence analysis model has development cost-saving effect because it is capable of predicting the dynamic behavior of an object without the prototype.

  • In this study, the multi-body dynamics model for a wave energy converter is established. The equations of motions for the mechanical parts of the wave energy converter are derived to analyze the dynamic behavior. A spring method with the same performance as the counter weight method is proposed. The counter weight method and spring method are analyzed for evaluating the performance of the wave energy converter. RecurDyn program which is a kind of commercial multi-body dynamics program is used to perform the dynamic simulation of the wave energy converter.

  • Maglev vehicles, which are levitated and propelled by electromagnets, often run on elevated guideways comprised of steel, aluminum and concrete. Therefore, an analysis .of the dynamic interaction between the Maglev vehicle and the guideway is needed in the design of the critical speed, ride, controller design and weight reduction of the guideway. This study proposes a dynamic interaction simulation technique using a flexible beam model based on multi-body dynamics. The vehicle and the elevated guideway are represented as a multi-body dynamics model and a two-dimensional flexible beam, respectively. The proposed model was applied to an urban transit Maglev vehicle, UTM01, which is undergoing test drive. As a result of the proposed method, we concluded that it is possible to analyze the dynamic interaction between the Maglev vehicle and the guideway.
