  • Consumers are increasingly quality orientated and an understanding of the factors that influence product quality is a prerequisite to the development of programs to produce quality pork to meet market requirements. Pork quality is comprised of many components and is multi-factorial in nature. This review focuses on genetic and environmental influences on muscle color, water holding capacity, and palatability attributes. The impact of genetic factors such as breed variation and the influence of major genes (the Halothane and Rendement Napole genes), as well as relationships between carcass leanness and quality, are considered. In addition, the effect of nutrition, including vitamins and minerals, feeding level, and dietary energy:protein ratio, on pork quality is reviewed. Finally, the impact of diet on fat composition and quality is summarized.

  • Wrinkle and fracture are two major defects frequently found in the sheet metal forming process. In this process there are more than one design attributes to optimize and several uncontrollable factors which cannot be ignored in determining the optimal values of design variables. Therefore, attempts to reduce defects through a traditional optimization technique are often led to failures. In this research, a new design method for reducing the wrinkle and fracture under uncontrollable factors is presented by using decision-making theory. To avoid the psychological difficulties in determining the scaling constants of the multi-attribute utility function by using the ordinary lottery questions, a pair-wise comparison procedure is adapted to avoid this problem. The effectiveness of the proposed method is illustrated through a robust design of sheet metal forming process of a side member of an automotive body.

  • The problems of evaluating Telecommunication Management Network Operation Systems (TMNOS) are Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) problems. A method for evaluating the TMNOS has not yet been clearly defined. A study of an effective and efficient management methodology for TMNOS, which are heterogeneous and complex, is needed. The components of TMNOS have attributes of dependence between considered criteria or alternatives. This type of dependence impact between criteria or alternatives is a network structure. We suggest a methodology of Analytic Delphi Network Process (ADNP) for evaluating TMONS. The TMNOS problem of Korea Telecom (KT) is suggested as a case study of the ADNP.

  • In this study, we present an approach for reducing the information inaccuracy of existing star aggregation based on bypass links when there are multi-constraint QoS parameters in asymmetric networks. In our approach, bypass links with low similarity are selected. Links that are not chosen as bypass links are included in each group depending on the star's link characteristics. Moreover, each link group is aggregated differently according to the similarity of the links that make up the group. The selection of a bypass link by using link similarity reduces the existing time complexity of O($N^3$) to O(N) by virtue of the simplification of the selection process. In addition, the adaptive integration according to the characteristics of the links in each group is designed to reduce the information inaccuracy caused by static aggregation. Simulation results show that the proposed method maintains low information distortion; specifically, it is 3.8 times lower than that of the existing method, even when the number of nodes in a network increases.

  • Structural tests often involve a large amount of complicated information. Data models can be used to efficiently organize the information. This paper briefly describes a data model for structural tests including hybrid tests, performed by the Real-Time Multi-Directional (RTMD) facility at the ATLSS Center of Lehigh University in America. The RTMD facility is an equipment site within the George E. Brown, Jr. Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES). The data model is called the Lehigh Model. An overview of classes and attributes of the Lehigh Model is presented, and the Lehigh Model is compared with other data models to show its benefits for structural testing.

  • Placement of multiple dies on an MCM or high-performance VLSI substrate is a non-trivial task in which multiple criteria need to be considered simultaneously to obtain a true multi-objective optimization. Unfortunately, the exact physical attributes of a design are not known in the placement step until entire design process is carried out. When the performance issues are considered, crosstalk noise constraints in the form of net separation and via constraint become important. In this paper, for better performance and wirability estimation during placement for MCMs, several performance constraints are taken into account simultaneously. A graph-based wirability estimation along with the Genetic placement optimization technique is proposed to minimize crosstalk, crossing, wirelength and the number of layers. Our work is significant since it is the first attempt at bringing the crosstalk and other performance issues into the placement domain.

  • The area of discourse analysis has long neglected the value of images as a semiotic resource in communication. This paper suggests that like language, images are rich in meaning potential and are governed by visual grammar structures which can be utilized to decode the meanings of images. Employing a theoretical framework in visual communication, two digital images are examined for their representational and interactive dimensions and the dimensions' relation to the magazine advertisement genre. The results show that the framework identified narrative and conceptual processes, relations between participants and viewers, and symbolic attributes of the images, which all contribute to the sociological interpretations of the images. The identities and relationships between viewers and participants suggested in the images signify desirable qualities that may be associated to the product of the advertiser. The findings support the theory of visual grammar and highlight the potential of images to convey multi-layered meanings.

  • Although MAchine Readable Cataloging (MARC) and Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) are currently the most broadly used bibliographic structures for generating bibliographic data in the library community, each has its own weaknesses in describing information resources in diverse media. If the MARC format could be implemented in a structure that reflects the multi-layered characteristics of FRBR, its use could address current problems and limitations in resource description. The purpose of this research is to propose an alternative approach that can integrate the heterogeneous bibliographic structures of MARC and FRBR through the applications of facet and facet analysis. The proposed faceted data model is expected to function as a conceptual structure that can mediate between MARC data elements and FRBR attributes in order to utilize these structures in a more reliable and comprehensive way.

  • Residential indoor space is a major living setting for young children where multi-dimension at development can be expected through the interaction with items and components of the environment. The physical environment and attributes have been, however, relatively ignored. Especially during last several decades of housing development, residential units have been produced without accurate understanding of residents' material possession. To better design living environments, especially, a life setting for children, this research focused on finding out the characteristics of living items which belong to and are used by children.
