This paper presents a numerical investigation on the structural response of a multi-story building subjected to spreading multi-compartment fires. A recently proposed simple fire model has been used to simulate two spreading multi-compartment fire scenarios in a 10-story steel-framed office building. By assuming simple temperature rising and distribution profiles in the fire exposed structural components (steel beams, steel column and concrete slabs), finite element simulations using a three-dimensional structural model has been carried out to study the failure behavior of the whole structure in two multi-compartment fire conditions and also in a standard fire condition. The structure survived the standard fire but failed in the multi-compartment fire. Whilst more accurate fire models and heat transfer models are needed to better predict the behaviors of structures in realistic fires, the current study based on very simple models has demonstrated the importance and necessity of considering spreadingmulti-compartment fires in fire resistance design of multi-story buildings.
In the automobile industry, lamps are frequently used as a mean to emphasize each company's brand identity. Therefore, many detailed design models have emerged in order to realize a differentiated image in preparation for competitive vehicles. Among them, the design of a multi compartment lighting image concept that realizes light divided in multiple space also being introduced by various manufacturers. In this study, in order to solve the problem of cost and weight rise that the existing multi compartment image lamp has, using TRIZ method such as functional analysis modeling and trimming. Through this process, an idea to minimize cost and weight was derived. As the idea was designed in detail, the formation of light did not go as desired, and the diffusion of light also proceeded differently than intended. In order to overcome this problem, a new concept of corrosion and diffusion structure was applied. Eventually, it overcomes various problems and successfully applied it to a real vehicle. The idea was actually reflected in the "Santa Fe" model. Later, the media focused on the lamps to which the idea was applied, and contributed to the sale of a large number of vehicles by providing consumers with a new light sensibility. During the research process, it was possible to secure a number of patents and knowledge of new design concepts.

A conventional single compartment model cannot simulate reasonably the migration phenomenon of contaminants through unsaturated zone, due to the intrinsic unrealistic assumption of the compartment model that contaminants entering a compartment are immediately and uniformly mixed. Although, a multi-compartments model, in which even physically identical layer is divided into multiple compartments, may be used for explaining the retardation of contaminant mass flux along with increasing number of compartments, its numerical modeling is usually time-consuming and appropriate analytical solutions have not been reported yet. In order to improve the conventional compartment models on contaminant migration through unsaturated zone, a series of analytical solutions for multi-compartments model were derived and a generalized constraint under which the results from multi-compartments model can be simply approximated by single compartment model was proposed. The simplified approximation method was verified by a simple numerical analysis on the constraint under hypothetical conditions. It was also proved that the influent contaminant transfer rate from the bulk unsaturated zone can be generally represented into a time-dependent nominal transfer rate rather than a constant. In addition, the nominal transfer rate turned out to be very sensitive to the contaminant transfer rate between compartments in unsaturated zone, but to be almost insensitive to the transfer rate from contaminated zone. It is expected that the simplified approximation method developed in this study can be used for rapid and reasonable estimation of the migration phenomenon of contaminant through unsaturated zone, instead of time-consuming multi-compartments modeling.

Generally, surface vessels have many compartments for operation and living quarters, and each compartment is an important space for the ship's survivability. During ship construction, a compartment leak test is necessary and is carried out on each vessel. However, the current test method is in doubt when looking at the actual test results. The reason is that only one pressure gauge is used for the measurement to check the air, so an uncomprehended phenomenon is detected during group compartment leak tests. From this point of view, an improved test device and method are needed. In this study, a multi-channel data acquisition device with multiple pressure sensors is proposed to detect each compartment's pressure variation or pressure drop. This test is a more confidential compartment leak test than the current method, and the test device can show real-time pressure detection values of each of the pressure sensors, which are installed in each compartment, including unmanned space.
Background: Generally, pharmacokinetics (PK) models could be stratified into two models. The compartment PK model uses the concept of simple compartmentalization to describe complex bodies, and the physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model describes the body using multi-compartment networking. Notwithstanding sharing a theoretical background in both models, there was still a lack of knowledge to enhance compatibility in both models. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the compatibility among PBPK, lumping model and compartment PK model with voriconazole PK case study. Methods: The number of compartments and blood flow on each tissue in the PBPK model were modified using the lumping method, considering physiological similarities. The concentration-time profiles and area under the concentration-time curve (AUC) parameters were simulated at each model, assuming taken voriconazole oral 400 mg single dose. After that, those mentioned PK parameters were compared. Results: The PK profiles and parameters of voriconazole in the three models were similar that proves their compatibility. The AUC of central compartment in the PBPK and lumping model was within a 2-fold range compared to those in the 2- compartment model. The AUC of non-eliminating tissues compartment in the PBPK model was similar to those in the lumping model. Conclusion: Regarding the compatibility of the three PK models, the utilization of the lumping method was confirmed by suggesting its reliable PK parameters with PBPK and compartment PK models. Further case studies are recommended to confirm our findings.

Multi-dimensional fire dynamics were studied numerically with the change in ventilation conditions in a full-scale ISO 9705 room. Fire Dynamic Simulator (FDS) was used for the identical conditions conducted in previous experiments. Flow rate and doorway width were changed to create over-ventilated fire (OVF) and under-ventilated fire (UVF). From the numerical simulation, it was found that the internal flow pattern rotated in the opposite direction for the UVF relative to the OVF so that a portion of products recirculated to the inside of compartment. Significant change in flow pattern with ventilation conditions may affect changes in the complex process of CO and soot formation inside the compartment due to increase in the residence time of high-temperature products. The fire behavior in the UVF created complex 3D characteristics of species distribution as well as thermal and flow structures. In particular, additional burning near the side wall inside the compartment significantly affected the flow pattern and CO production. The distribution of CO inside the compartment was explained with 3D $O_2$ distribution and flow patterns. It was observed that gas sampling at local positions in the upper layer were insufficient to completely characterize the internal structure of the compartment fire.
In S. Korea, recently, building fire accidents of residential accommodations or recreational facilities have taken place more frequently than before. Among various building constructions, Multi-layered structure, such as office-residential complex, are mostly made in S. korea. $O_2$, $CO_2$, CO, $NO_x$, $SO_x$, and HCl, these gases has toxic hazard and harmful for human body. And it is predicted that different concentration of released gases from diesel pool fire with upper and lower layer. Therefore, this study reports the fire characteristics of Multi-layered structure by analyzing the fire behavior and concentration of combustion gases of a experimental compartment via real scale fire experiment, in order to predict risks and secure safety for similar fire accidents.
The present study has been conducted to investigate the validity of the computational fire model and the results predicted by BRANZFIRE zone model and FDS field model are compared with a real scale fire test with spray fire in a multi-compartment. The liquid spray fires fueled with toluene and methanol are used as the fire source and the quantitative measurement of heat release rate is performed in an isolated ISO-9705 compartment with a standard door opening. The temperature field predicted by FDS model showed good agreement with the measurement in the fire room and the corridor, and BRANZFIRE model also gave acceptable result in spite of its simplicity and roughness. The mean temperature predicted by FDS model corresponds with measurement within maximum discrepancy range of 25% and the overall mean value of FDS model matched well with experimental data less than 10%. This study can contribute to establish the limitation and application scope of computational fire model and provide reference data for applying to reliable fire risk assessment.

The validation of Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) was conducted for the under-ventilated fire in well-confined multi-compartments representative of nuclear power plant. Numerical results were compared with experimental data obtained by the OECD/NEA PRISME project. The effects of the numerical boundary conditions (B.C.) in ventilated system and the flame suppression model applied within FDS on the thermal and chemical environments inside the compartment were discussed in details. It was found that numerical B.C. on the vent flow resulting from over-pressure at ignition and under-pressure at extinction should be considered carefully in order to predict accurately the species concentrations rather than temperatures and heat fluxes inside the multi-compartment. The default information of suppression model applied within FDS resulted in artificial phenomena such as flame extinction and re-ignition, and thus the FDS results on the under-ventilated fire showed good agreement with the experimental results as the modified suppression criteria of the fuel used was adopted.

The heat release rate (HRR) and fire growth rate of fire for the solid combustibles consisting of multi-materials was measured through the ISO 9705 room corner test, and the computational analysis in a closed compartment was performed to simulate a fire using the heat release rate prediction model provided by a Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS). The method of predicting the heat release rate provided by the FDS was divided into a simple model and a pyrolysis model. Each model was applied and computational analysis was performed under the same conditions. As the solid combustible consisting of multi-materials, a cinema chair composed mostly of PU foam, PP, and steel was selected. The simple model was over-predicted compared to the predicted heat release rate and fire growth rate using the pyrolysis model in a closed compartment.
