  • Clear-cut followed by tree planting has been a conventional management practice in burned forests in Korea. Because this can considerably increase soil loss, hillslope treatments may be needed in order to improve soil stability at poorly regenerating areas. This paper reviews the effects of hillslope treatments, such as seeding, mulching and log erosion barriers, which have been applied to restore vegetation and conserve soil in burned forests in North America and Europe. Seeding has been the most common method for postfire restoration. However, the effects of seeding on vegetation cover and soil erosion are not clear and seeding with non-native species has been reported to inhibit regeneration of native vegetation. Mulching has been found to be effective at reducing soil erosion. However, this also can introduce non-native plant species and inhibit native plant regeration. Although studies on the effect of log erosion barriers are very few, it appears that log erosion barriers are effective in the period of little rainfall. Hillslope treatments for postfire restoration is not necessary for naturally regenerating areas and therefore, they should be restricted to the areas where regeneration potential is low and runoff and soil loss is considerable. Long-term monitoring is needed to assess the effectiveness of hillslope treatments on soil erosion, the introduction of non-native plant species and the inhibition of natural plant regeneration.

  • This experiment has been carried out to determine optimal culture conditions for the production of cut flowers and tubers of Calla (Zantedeschia 'Golden Affair' and 'Black Magic') in highlands. Treatments consisted of various levels of root zone environments, Results are as follows: Calla 'Golden Affair' were grown with different mulching materials such as Non-mulching, Black film, reflective film, Rice hull. Mulching materials resulted in no difference in the number of cut flowers but flower length was highest in reflective film. Calla 'Black Magic' were treated with various soil water content, soil type and watering time. Number of cut flowers and flower quality were greatest when the plants were watered at -80 kPa soil water content. No symptoms of soft rot (Erwinia carotovora) was observed at this soil water content. The occurrence of soft rot was observed with similar percentage according to soil type and the soil water content. When Calla 'Black Magic' were watered at the time of soil surface drying, growth was greater compared to others. Air temperature and PPF affected plant growth and photosynthesis. Photosynthetic rate was greatest at $25^{\circ}C$ and PPF $200{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$, while lowest at $28^{\circ}C$ and PPF $800{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$. Soft rot did not occur without regard to dipping treatment (0, 5, 10, 24, 48 hours) when the day and night temperature were maintained at $25^{\circ}C$ and $20^{\circ}C$, respectively.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of slow release fertilizers (SRF), crotonylidene diurea (CDU) and latex coated urea (LCU), on nitrogen (N) use efficiency (NUE) and nitrate-N leaching in a silty clay loam soil under polyethylene film mulching (PFM) for sesame cultivation. In PFM plot, concentrations of $NO_3-N$ and $NH_4-N$ in SRF applied soils were less than that in the urea plot during the whole growing period. However, $NO_3-N$ and $NH_4-N$ in all the non-mulched plots (NM) were not significantly different. Urea-N in soil treated with SRF was higher than urea plot until 50 days after application and was comparable in all the treatments after 50 days. $NO_3-N$ concentrations in leached solution in 21 days after urea fertilization in PFM and NM were 26 mg $L^{-1}$ and 83 mg $L^{-1}$, respectively. However, $NO_3-N$ in leached solution at applied CDU and LCU was less than that of urea similar to nitrate concentration in soil. $NO_3-N$ in leached solution in applied CDU and LCU in 44 days after application was about 25% lower than that urea plot and PFM, while the $NO_3-N$ concentration of CDU and LCU treatment in NM did not changed. Application of SRF increased the yield of sesame and N recovery compared to urea and there was a little difference between SRF and N levels. In conclusion, application of 80% N level with SRF increased N recovery and reduced nitrate leaching without reduction of yields compared with urea application.

  • The experiment was aimed to determine a change of chemical component in irrigatted water based on different tillage methods and nitrogen rates under mulching of barley straw in direct seeded rice. There was no difference in water pH of no-tillaged plot but high in tillaged plot until 10 days after treatment. The electric conductivity(EC) of the water was higher in no-tillaged plot than in tillaged plot. However, the dissolved oxygen content was vice versa. The content of NH$_4$-N was high in higher application rate of N fertilizer without the tillage. Mean while, NO$_3$-N content was highly affected by no-till aged plot particularly in between application time and fertilizer rate but not in tillaged plot. There was higher in P043- content with the no-tillaged plot compared to the tillaged plot. It was big difference with higher application rate of the fertilizer. Soil cations were high in much application of fertilizer without the tillage.

  • Experiments were conducted to study the effect of auxins and cultural factors on rooting characteristics in offshoots cutting of Aloe vera. The result obtained were as follows;1. Short offshoots(15-20cm) with rhizome had more roots than that of the removed rhizome, while long offshoots(25-30cm) without rhizome had more roots and heavier root dry weight than short offshoots with rhizome. The highest rooting ability occured when IBA treated 500mg per liter in short offshoots with rhizome, whereas long offshoots without rhizome showed higher rooting ability at the level of 1,000mg/l of IBA and 200mg/I of NAA2. Among three kinds of anxin treated, both IBA and NAA showed better rooting ability than ethychlozate. Root number, root length and root dry weight were higher at 10 min. dipping treatment of IBA 500mg/I for short off-shoots without rhizome and 10 min. dipping treatment of IBA 1,000mg/l for long offshoots with rhizome. Rooting ability of long offshoots was higher than that of short offshoots.3. In addition to IBA 1,000mg/l, 7-day dryness under shading condition increased root number and dry weight of root in offshoots without rhizome. Control treatment lengthened root by increasing drying period under the shading condition.4. The plain soil with mamure had not only higher root dofferentiation but higher root growth of offshoots cutting than the artificial soil.5. Rooting ability in offshoots cutting had a tendency increasing with decrease in shading percentage to natural. Black color poly ethylene film mulching had better rooting ablility than transparency poly ethlene film mulching in offshoots cutting.

  • These experiments were carried out to examine efficacy of soil solarization for control of pink root disease by means of mulching with transparent polyethylene sheets in the hot season. The effects of soil solarization on incidence of pink-root disease caused by Pyrenochaeta terrestris and on onion growth and on populations of soil fungi were investigated. Solarization was dramatically effective in reducing pink root incidence in onion seedling and harvested onion bulb. A 30-day and 40-day solarization treatment significantly improved seedling survival and increased yield of 'Changnyeong-deago' onion while decreasing incidence of pink root. Populations of soil fungi from fields planted to onion were assayed on selective media. Solarization treatment was effective in reducing populations of P. terrestris, Pythium spp., and Rhizoctonia sp. in soil. Increase of yield of onion bulbs was associated with control of soil-borne pathogenic fungi. Soil solarization had beneficial effects on yield, bulb diameter, or incidence of pink root.

  • The effects of cover crops on weed suppression were evaluated in this study. Weed suppressing effects of hairy vetch cover crops were evaluated in summer grain fields. Cover crops were sown at the sowing rate of $60kg\;ha^{-1}$ on Oct. 2012 and Feb. 2013 without basal fertilization. Three weeks old sorghum seedlings were transplanted after minimum tillage on June 2013. Hairy vetch cover crop treatment significantly reduced weed biomass in the transplanted sorghum. By smothering, the cover crops reduced weed biomass to economic level in sorghum. Besides the weed suppression, hairy vetch cover crop resulted in green manure effect on crop growth. Hairy vetch treatment showed beneficial effects on sorghum growth. Reduction of weeds caused by use of strip-tillage machine and polyethylene film mulching was 71% and 88%, respectively. At harvest, yield of sorghum was greater in order of polyethylene film mulching > hairy vetch cover crop > control in transplanted fields.

  • To establish law-put fertilization technique and increase of fertilization efficiency during cultivation of plastic film mulching for plastic the improvement of soil properties, nutrition efficiency and yield by banded subsoil fertilization (BSF) using band spoty applicator was conducted at radish (Raphanus sativus L.) field in Honan Agricultural Research Institute from 1997 to 1998 for 2 years. These results were as follows. T-N, available $P_2O_5$ exchangeable Ca and K contents of soil were increased those of before experiment especially in BSF treatment. Also, the content of soil $NO_3-N$ was higher in BSF as fertilization amount is increasing than in CF (conventional fertilization). Uptake amounts of nitrogen fertilized were high in BSF during overall the growth period of plant and N utilization was high by $21.9{\sim}30.4%$ in BSF compared to in CF. The rate of fertilizer loss by rainfall was largely reduced, because all fertilizer applied was putted around the root zone. The total yields of fresh radish BSF treatments were more increased $13{\sim}37%$ than that of CF treatment.

  • $GA_3$ treatments for seeds of Perilla frutescens var. acuta Kudo were evaluated as a means of improving the percent germination, and the interactions of $GA_3$, mulching, and sowing depth on seedling emergence were investigated in late sowing. Percentage germination of seeds treated with different concentration of $GA_3$ was the most effective in 100 ppm treatment for 24 hours. The germinability according to the seeds soaking time was not significantly different over 12 hours in 100 ppm $GA_3$. At high temperature $(25^{\circ}C\;and\;30^{\circ}C)$, percentage germination was significantly increased in 100 ppm ${GA_3}$ treatment. In late sowing (1th or 15th May), seedling emergence was significantly higher in 100 ppm $GA_3$ treatment than nontreatment, and that was significantly increased when the seeds treated with 100 ppm $GA_3$ were mulched with 10 mm rice hull after molding with 5 mm soil depth.
