  • Mucoepidermoid carcinoma arising in the tracheobronchial tree is an extremely rare tumor. Usually it remains as locally invasive neoplasm, although malignant change is described. Histologically, it is characterized by an admixture of vacuolated, mucus producing cells and sheets of epithelial cells with a cohesive pattern which resemble squamous cells. Its clinical and histopathological behaviors were reported as varying degrees of benign to extremely malignant. We had experienced two young patients with low-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the right and left upper lobar bronchi. A 15-year-old man who had had intermittent hemoptysis for 1 year underwent right upper lobectomy. And the other 18-year-old man had suffered from obstructive pneumonitis for 6 months underwent left pneumonectomy. The postoperative courses were uneventful, and the bronchoscopy and chest CT which were done at 6 months later revealed no regional recurrence.

  • Author studied the pathogenesis of Sino-bronchiectasis with review of clincal and pathological findings of resected lungs in 24 eases of bronchiectasis, and the results were as follows: 1. Of the 24 eases of bronchiectasis, Sino-bronchiectasis were found in 11 cases and these cases most commonly, developed in first and second decade of life. In a majority of these cases, the main symptoms were the signs of wet bronchiectasis. 2. The typical roentgenograrn changes of plain chest x rays were increase in size and loss of definition of the markings and bronchographically revealed the cylindrical or tubular form in majority of these cases. 3. Pathologically Sino-bronchiectasis involved specific segmental areas of the lungs such as left basal and S4+5 segments and revealed commonly tubular dilatation. The most common findings of bronchial wall of dilated bronchus were the inflammatory cellular infiltration and cylindrical hyperplasia of mucus epithelial layers. 4. It was suspected that there were some causal relations in pathogenesis between chronic sinusitis and bronchiectasis.

  • In a preliminary screening of plant extracts for the antigastritic and antiulcer actions in rats, the extracts of head of Panax ginseng Radix showed positive activity in HCl ethanol-induced gastric lesion. Among the systematic fractions of hexane, chloroform, butanol and water, the most potent butanol fraction reduced significantly HCl ethanol-induced gastric lesion at the oral dose of 500 mg/kg. In pylorus ligated rats, hexane and butanol fraction showed decreases in the volume of gastric secretion and acid output, of which effects were stronger in butanol fraction. Further assays with butanol fraction disclosed that it significantly suppressed the aspirin-induced and Shay ulcer. The butanol fraction at the intraduodenal dose of 500 mg/kg showed significant stimulation of mucus secretion.

  • The mucoepidermoid carcinoma is a rare tumor in the lung for less than 1% of all pulmonary neoplasm. It is mostly presented as a solitary pulmonary nodule at a large bronchial tree on bronchoscope. But more peripheral located tumor that not accessible to the bronchoscope are rarely reported on literature. The cytologic findings of these tumors are discribed as a mixture of squamous cells, mucous cells, and intermediate cells with overlapped cellular clusters. We experienced a case of peripheral mucoepidermoid carcinoma of lung diagnosed by fine needle aspiration cytology. The smear showed many cellular clusters on mucoid background. They consisted of many intermediate cells with occasional mucus-secreting cells, but malignant squamous cells were not present.

  • The host finding behavior of Entobdella hippoglossi oncomiracidium, skin parasite of the Atlantic halibut was investigated. Almost of the parasite swam downward from the top to the bottom of the 150cm glass tube within 30 minutes. The average swimming speed of oncomiracidium was $0.32\pm0.10cm/second$ throughout the experiment. When the parasites arrived on the bottom of the glass tube, they moved upwards and downwards continuously within the 10cm of the bottom. This behavior would suggest that it may be one of the essential methods for host searching of the parasite. When the oncomiracidia was exposed different stimuli, they responded positively light and halibut mucus.

  • Asthma is characterized by chronic airway inflammation with intense eosinophil and lymphocyte infiltration, mucus hyperproduction, and airway hyperresponsiveness. Accumulating evidence indicates that antigen-specific Th2 cells and their cytokines such as IL-4, IL-5, and IL-13 orchestrate these pathognomonic features of asthma. In addition, we and others have recently shown that IL-17-producing $CD4^+$ T cells (Th17 cells) and IL-23, an IL-12-related cytokine that is essential for survival and functional maturation of Th17 cells, are involved in antigen-induced airway inflammation. In this review, our current understanding of the roles of IL-23 and Th17 cells in the pathogenesis of allergic airway inflammation will be summarized.

  • Necrotizing sialometaplasia (NS) which mimics malignancy both clinically and histopathologically is an uncommon benign, self-limiting inflammatory disease of the mucus-secreting minor salivary glands. The lesion is believed to be the result of vascular ischemia that may be initiated by trauma. Till date, the diagnosis of NS remains a challenge. This report demonstrates a case of NS in a 73-year-old male patient who presented with an ulcerative lesion in his palate. He had a history of local trauma and was long-term user of salbutamol inhaler. An incisional biopsy was carried out and the diagnosis was established through history, clinical examination, histopathology using Hematoxylin and Eosin stain. The patient was given symptomatic treatment and the lesion healed in about 7 weeks.

  • The histochemical, cytochemical, and immunocytochemical investigations were conducted to find out the cellulase activity in the accessory glands of the digestive system of the oriental land snail Nesiohelix samarangae under the LM, SEM, and TEM. The cellulase activity was shown in the epithelium of th digestive gland by labelling with the immunogold (protein-A gold) particles. The epithelial cells showing the cellulase activity were Type 1 and Type 3 cells out of five types of the epithelial cells of the digestive gland. None of epithelial cells of the mucus gland and the salivary gland and the salivary gland were not labeled with the immunogold particles.

  • To elucidate the ichthyotoxic mechanisms of a harmful dinoflagellate Cochlodinium polykrikoides, biochemical and hematological responses of fish exposed to blooms were investigated. Particularly, based on our finding that oxidative damages of gill were associated with fish mortality, dysfunction of ion-transporting enzymes and secretion of gill mucus of fish exposed to this bloom species were examined.
