Objectives : The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of Chuna Treatment and Ouhyul herbal acupuncture on the patients with cervical pain caused by traffic accidents. Methods : This study was carried out on the 60 out-patients with cervical pain caused by whiplash injury. These patients were divided into two groups, group A and group B, of 30 patients each. Group A was treated with acupuncture and Chuna treatment and group B was treated with acupuncture and Ouhyul herbal acupuncture. All the patients from both groups were treated four times, twice a week for two weeks. The results of treatment were evaluated by VAS and NDI score. Results : Statistically, both group A and B demonstrated significant improvement in VAS and NDI. But there were no significant differences in the VAS and NDI between two groups. Conclusion : According to the results of this study, it was suggested that Chuna treatment and Ouhyul herbal acupuncture are effective in reducing cervical pain caused by traffic accidents. However, there were no significant differences in the VAS and NDI between two groups.
Objectives : Electronic moxibustion was developed to overcome the weakness of conventional moxibution. However, in spite of many benefits, it also can not be entirely free from the concern of burning. This study was performed to investigate the proper treatment time of electronic moxibustion. Methods : Male sprague-Dawley rats weighing about 350 g were used. Animals were anesthetized with sodium pentobarbital and shaved on the abdomen or back. The full charged-electronic moxibustion device was placed on the shaved site and it was observed if there happened any adverse event after treatment. Results : At the temperatures of 41, 43, and $45^{\circ}C$ there was no abnormal sign after moxibustion even in full time. However, at $47^{\circ}C$, the safe treatment time was 3 min. On the other hand, $49^{\circ}C$ produced diverse adverse events even in 1 min. Conclusions : Results of the present study suggest that the safe treatment time of electronic moxibustion is different according to the temperature. The most common adverse effect in this electronic moxibustion was the white spot and it is needed to observe whether there is any adverse event until 48 h after treatment.
Objectives : The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of electro-acupuncture treatment for lumbago patients caused by traffic accident. Methods : 60 patients were divided into two groups, group A and group B, of 30 patients each. Group A was treated with electro-acupuncture treatment and general acupuncture treatment twice per week for four weeks. Group B was treated with general acupuncture treatment twice per week for four weeks. Results : Between the two groups there was no significant difference in the VAS and RMDQ in the statistics. Conclusions : There was no significant difference between the two groups in the VAS and RMDQ in the statistics. However, it turned out that electro-acupuncture and general acupuncture was effective in reducing the pain of the patients in group A and B according to increased number of the treatment.
Background : One of the characteristics of acupuncture, a popular modality for treating musculoskeletal pain, is a plurality in diagnosis and treatment that can profoundly influence the treatment outcome. This multiplicity in treatment modality has to be considered in any research on the effectiveness of acupuncture. Many practitioners stress the necessity for individualized patient treatment, including acupuncture point selection and manipulation technique. However, the importance of individualization in acupuncture treatment, compared with standardization, has received little attention in clinical trials. The aim of the future study described here is therefore to compare the effectiveness of individualized acupuncture for knee osteoarthritis with standardized acupuncture and no acupuncture in patients with knee osteoarthritis. Methods : A total of 195 patients aged 50 years and over with knee pain, will be randomly divided into three treatment groups: individualized acupuncture, standardized acupuncture, and waiting list. Outcome data will be collected through patient.completed questionnaires before randomization, and at 4, 8 and 12 weeks after randomization. The questionnaires will be investigated demographic details as well as information on pain, movement and function of the affected knee, general health and quality of life. Discussion : This paper presents details on the rationale, design, and methods of the trial.
Objectives : The aim is to comprehend the difference of moxibustion used according to applied body parts (knee pain, neck pain, back pain) to oriental doctors running clinic in Seoul. Methods : A sampling of 288 oriental doctors running clinic in Seoul was done and the doctors were asked to fill out 20 questions by interviewing directly from Nov. 23. 2009 to Jan. 9. 2010. Results : The result shows that moxibustion was used for knee pain and back pain more than neck pain. The type of moxibustion mostly used was sticker moxibustion for all three symptoms. Burn marks were left mostly in knee and back pain. Most large volume of moxa was used to back pain. More than half of the oriental doctors used 1-3 acupoints for one procedure and on average 2-3 sessions was done. Patients with knee pain and back pain had more than 4 sessions compared to neck pain. Treatments were mostly done 3 times a week, and as for total treatment period, it took less than 1 week for acute symptom, and it took more than 1 week and less than 5 weeks for chronic symptom. Conclusions : This research shows that the method of moxibustion used differs according to the area of treatment(knee pain, neck pain, back pain) by survey of oriental doctors through direct interviews.
Objectives : This study was performed to review articles concerning acupuncture or moxibustion treatment for Complex Regional Pain Syndromes. Methods : On-line databases including PubMed, Cochrane Library, Ovid-EMBASE, NDSL and OASIS were searched to find articles concerning acupuncture or moxibustion treatment for Complex Regional Pain Syndromes. Several overlapping articles and those not relevant to the topic were excluded, as well as review articles and commentaries. Results : 16 case reports were selected through the procedure, all of which presented successful treatment cases of Complex Regional Pain Syndromes with acupuncture and moxibustion. Most of them presented one single patient case and were published in Korea. However, almost half of them were printed in English, and had been continuously published since 2005. It was remarkable that pharmacopuncture was predominantly used to treat Complex Regional Pain Syndromes. Also, we noted that Chinese scalp acupuncture needs to be studied further as two successful cases were presented from the U.S army. Conclusion : The results show that several case reports have been published regarding Complex Regional Pain Syndromes treated with acupuncture and moxibustion. However, all of them were case reports which are given low status in Evidence-Based Medicine. We expect that a more diverse range of articles, including case control studies, cohort studies and randomized controlled trials will be performed in the near future, and that a unified outcome measure will be developed for Complex Regional Pain Syndromes.
Objectives : The aim of this study was to observe the effect of needle-embedding combined with oriental medical treatment therapy on hemifacial spasm. Methods : 2 patients were treated with needle-embedding therapy with oriental medical treatment. After treatment, we evaluated the effect by Scott's scale. And we checked the satisfaction degree and side effect. Results : After treatment, the grade of spasm classified by Scott's scale was decreased and hemifacial spasm was visibly improved. Conclusions : This study showed that needle-embedding therapy with oriental medical treatment was effective to improve hemifacial spasm.
Objectives : A safety issue on acupuncture and moxibustion treatment during pregnancy is as important as effectiveness. To establish a rationale and research strategy for future studies, a traditional literature review was performed to summarize how and for what conditions acupuncture and moxibustion treatment was given during pregnancy. Methods : An extensive traditional literature search for acupuncture and moxibustion treatment during pregnancy was conducted in texts on acupuncture and moxibustion, obstetrics and gynecology, and comprehensive medical texts. Treatment conditions, methods, and contraindications were summarized and tabulated. Results : Twenty-eight books were included in our review. Most frequent description of acupuncture and moxibustion treatment use during pregnancy was for difficult delivery including breech presentations; commonly used acupuncture points for difficult labor included LI4, SP6, BL67, BL60, KI6, ST30, SP12, LR4, LR3, PC6, CV3, CV14, KI13, and GB21, indicating that they may have to be avoided during pregnancy. Descriptions of other symptoms or conditions were sparse. For habitual abortion or recurrent miscarriage, moxibustion on GV4, BL23, CV3, KI8, and KI2 was indicated. A combination of LI4 and SP6, and CV4 were contraindicated during pregnancy consistently across the reviewed books. Conclusions : Our traditional literature review has shown that the use of acupuncture and moxibustion treatment during pregnancy has been limited. Given that more and more pregnant women are interested in safe and effective treatment, further research of acupuncture's safety and efficacy during pregnancy is urgently needed.

The aim of this study was to examine pharmacopuncture treatment for lateral epicondylitis, and to contribute to developing a standardized treatment regimen by reviewing trends in clinical trials. Five randomized controlled trials, 1 case-control study, and 8 cohort studies published after 1999, that involved pharmacopuncture for lateral epicondylitis, were selected from Korean and international online databases (n = 8). The type of pharmacopuncture, dose, frequency, efficacy, and adverse events were analyzed. Seven types of pharmacopuncture were used, namely Bee Venom, Illicium henryi Diels, Akebiae Caulis, Angelicae sinensis Diels, Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort, Hominis Placenta, and Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix. Dose, treatment duration, and treatment frequency varied widely. One study assessed the treatment efficacy according to frequency. Nine studies lacked data on adverse events. The quality of 5 randomized controlled trials was low. Although pharmacopuncture treatment appeared to be effective for lateral epicondylitis, it was difficult to standardize the regimen for lateral epicondylitis.
Objectives : The purpose of this report is to estimate Cox flexion distraction treatment by comparing the Improvement of Sciatica treated by Cox flexion distraction treatment with Common treatment. Methods : This study was carried out on 60 patients with Sciatica who were hospitalized in Dongguk University Gyeongju Oriental Hospital from February, 2008 to December, 2008. Group A of 30 patients were taken both common treatment and Cox flexion distraction treatment. And Group B of 30 patients were only taken common treatment. And at treatment conclusion day, we checked and compared VAS(Visual Analogue Scale)and ODI(Oswestry disability index) out of these two group. SPSS(Statistical Program for Social Science) for Windows was used for a statistical analysis and the independent T-test was performed to gauge the improvement of VAS(Visual Analogue Scale)and ODI(Oswestry disability index) out of these two group, in which case, value of P below 0.05 is considered as useful. Results and Conclusions : The results of the VAS(Visual Analogue Scale)and ODI(Oswestry disability index) of comparison analysis between two group at treatment conclusion day, show that the improvement of Sciatica in common treatment with Cox flexion distraction treatment Group is more effective than that in common treatment.
