  • In this paper, a photonic RF true-time delay based on a partially side-polished fiber Bragg grating with heating electrode has been proposed and fabricated. It features continuous voltage-controlled operation, requiring no mechanical perturbation and no moving parts. For an RF signal carried over an optical signal, the time delay has been obtained by controlling the voltage applied to the electrode and thus adjusting its reflection positions from the fiber grating via the thermooptic effect. The achieved time delay is about 100 ps with the electrical power consumption of 280 mW.

  • Electrohydrodynamic (EHD) printing with the aid of strong electric fields can generate and pattern droplets that are smaller than droplets by other printing technologies. Conventional EHD printing has created two-dimensional (2D) patterns by moving its nozzle or a substrate in X and Y directions. In this study, we aimed to develop an EHD system that can create 2D patterns using a multielectrode array (MEA) without moving a nozzle or substrate. In particular, printing ink mixtures of biodegradable polymers and model dyes was patterned on a thin film made of another biodegradable polymer. Without movement of a nozzle and substrate, stable 2D patterning of minimum $6{\mu}m$ size over a range of about 1 mm away from the nozzle position was achieved by MEA control only. We also demonstrated the possibility of denser 2D pattering of the ink mixtures by moving a target substrate relative to MEA position.

  • Electrical discharge machining (EDM) cuts metal by discharging electric current across a thin gap between tool and workpiece. Electrical discharge wire cutting, a special form of EDM, uses a continuously moving conductive wire as an electrode, and is widely used for the manufacture of punches, dies and stripper plates. In the wire cutting process, the moving wire is usually supported by cantilever arm and wire guides. As the wire traveling speed has been increased in recent years to improve productivity, the vibration of the cantilever arm occurs, which reduces the positional accuracy of the machine. Therefore, the design and manufacture of the cantilever arm with high dynamic characteristics have become important as the machining speed increases. In this paper, the cantilever arm for guiding the moving wire was designed and manufactured using carbon fiber epoxy composite in order to improve the static and dynamic characteristics. Specimens for the composite cantilever arm were manufactured and tested to investigate the effect of the number of reinforcing plies and length fitted to steel flange on the load capacity. Also, the finite element analysis using layer and contact elements was performed to compare the calculated results with the experimental ones. From the results, the prototype of the composite cantilever arm for the electrical discharge wire cutting machine was manufactured and the static and dynamic characteristics were compared with those of the conventional steel cantilever arm.

  • An implementation for surface EMG network analysis and vertical control system of robotic arm is presented in this paper. The transmembranes are simulated by equivalent circuit and cable equation for propagation to be converted to circuit networks. The implementation is realized to be derived from the detecting EMG signal from 3 electrodes, and EMG transmembrane signals of human arm muscles are detected by several surface electrodes, high performance amplifier and filtering, converting analog to digital data and driving a servomotor for spontaneous robotic arm. The system is experimented by monitoring multiple steps vertical control angles corresponding to biceps muscle movement. The experimental results are that the vertical moving control level is measured to around 2 degrees and mean error ranges are lower 5%.

  • Electrical discharge machining(EDM) is an important process of machining the injection mold. This paper includes efficient design processes of electrodes for EDM. Based on the solid modeler, electrodes can be created by boolean and offset operations with core/cavity models. The built-in offset operations of the solid modeler may occur unexpected results due to the limitations of the solid modeler. We proposed the multi-step and moving-face offset processes in order to apply the EDM clearances. The proposed design processes are implemented with Unigraphics Vl5 API functions and C language and tested on Windows NT 4.0.

  • Cooling systems for electronic equipments are becoming more important. Cooling technologies using natural and forced convection are limited and operated in very low efficiency. A corona discharge is utilized as the driving mechanism for anair pump, which allows for airflow generation with low noise and no moving parts. However they do not enhance the flow rate and overcome the control mechanism of the pump. In this study a point-mesh type air pump, with a third electro de installed near the corona point, has been proposed and investigated by focusing on elevating the ionic wind velocity and power yield. As a result, the significantly enhanced ionic wind velocity and tremendously increased power yield can be obtained with the proposed air pump system.

  • A new electrostatic separator has been developed for the removal of unburned carbon from fly ash. In this separator, a flowing film of fly ash is created on the surface of a vibrating electrode. Conducting particles such as unburned carbon acquire electrostatic charges and jump out of the flowing film so that they can be removed from the non-conducting fly ash particles moving forward. The new separator has been tested successfully using a pilot-scale test unit at 0.5 tons/hr capacity. Based on the successful test results, a larger unit is being constructed at the present time.

  • An extraction chromatographic method of separating rare earth impurities from high purity $Nd_2O_3$, $Sm_2O_3$, $Gd_2O_3$, $Er_2O_3$, $Dy_2O_3$ and $Yb_2O_3$ was studied by using $HCl-NH_4Cl$ as moving phase and P507 as stationary phase. After the impurities were enriched from the eluate by chelant-activated carbon, the active carbon was ashed and the ignited residue was used to prepare the sample electrode for spark source mass spectrometric determination. The impurities in 99.9999% rare earth oxide can be determined by the proposed method with recovery over 80%.

  • The electrochemical machining of carbon steel was carried in various electrolytes which contain NACl and $NaCIO_3$. Though electrolyte containg NaCl yields fast machining rate, dimensional control is rather difficult. In the case of electrolyte with $NaCIO_3$, dimensional control of anode shape can be obtained through modification of cathode design. Mathematical modeling is also performed for these systems and agreements are good compared with experimental date. The constant gap experiment butween two electrode yielded faster machining rate than constant cathode moving rate experiment.

  • A micro particle manipulator, which is devised for trapping particles at fixed positions by negative dielectrophoretic force (DEP force), has been fabricated and experimented. It is composed of square type electrode arrays fabricated by nickel electroplating with the height of 28 ${\mu}m$. To improve the quality of electroplated nickel electrodes, plating conditions have been optimized. Micro particles used in this study are polystyrene spheres and their to the specific position and trapped. The DEP force along the moving path of the particles has been estimated by the motion equation of a single particle. The displacement of a particle with an elapsed time was measured using a high-speed camera (1000 frames/sec). The velocity and acceleration of the particle were calculated from the measured data. The DEP force acting on the particle was estimated.
