The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between the annual variation in diameter growth of Quercus spp. and climatic factors such as monthly temperature, precipitation and solar radiation in central and northern Korea. Annual diameter growth was measured by using stem cores of 262 Quercus trees, and the correlation between the diameter growth and the climatic factors was analyzed. Mean diameter growth of Quercus spp. in Jungwangsan was larger than that in Woraksan, and mean diameter growth by the species was large in order of Q. serrata>Q. variablis>Q. mongolica>Q. dentata. The diameter growth pattern of Quercus spp. in Woraksan was different from that in Jungwangsan. Positive correlations between diameter growth of Quercus trees and temperature or the solar radiation during July were found in Jungwangsan. Significant correlations between diameter growth and solar radiation during March and precipitation during June were found in Woraksan. It is suggested that climatic factors similarly affect the diameter growth of Quercus spp. in a mountainous terrain, but influences of the climatic factors depend on other environmental conditions such as altitude, topography and soil depth.

The present study evaluated the blocking effect of natural and artificial topography on sunshine duration in the southern coastal area of Haui-do. The geospatial data for the target area was constructed by geographic information system(GIS) data. Three-dimensional modeling based on solar azimuth and altitude angles was conducted for the assessment of sunshine environment. The sunshine area was evaluated over 80~90% of the target area in the daytime, especially in summer. The blocking effect of mountainous terrain on sunshine duration was presented at the northern residential area in the late afternoon. There was also the effect of artificial topography by construction of fill-up bank on sunshine environment at the southern residential area early in the morning and the south-western part of salt field in the late afternoon.

Based on the radio wave measurement of korean ocean-based DGPS by season, in this paper, the service coverages of ocean-based DGPS reference stations were analyzed according to the climate and season. The signal strengths and signal-to-noise ratios in the land service areas that are provided by ocean-based DGPS reference stations were measured. The ocean-based DGPS reference station except reference stations on the mountainous terrain and the low ground conductivity provide more than 68% service area in comparison with the designed land service coverage providing by the ocean-based DGPS reference stations. To provide the designed service area that is unrelated to a season, it is necessary to install and operate the DGPS reference station with good ground conductivity and high efficiency antenna. Also, the poor service regions which is generated by obstacles of electric wave on pathway can be resolved by the double service area providing by land-based DGPS reference stations.
The numerical simulation of wind and ozone ($O_3$) transport in mountainous regions was performed with a computational fluid dynamics technique. A dry deposition model for $O_3$ was designed to estimate $O_3$ deposition in complex terrain, and the qualitative validity of the predicted $O_3$ concentration field was confirmed by comparison with observed data collected with passive samplers. The simulation revealed that wind velocity increases around ridge lines and peaks of mountains. The areas with strong wind corresponded well with the sites of tree decline at high altitudes, suggesting that it is an important factor in the localization of tree/forest decline. On the other hand, there is no direct relationship between forest decline and $O_3$ concentration. The $O_3$ concentration, however, tends to increase as wind velocity becomes higher, thus the $O_3$ concentration itself may be a potential secondary factor in the localized decline phenomena. While the diffusion flux of $O_3$ is not related to localized tree decline, the pattern of advection flux is related to those of high wind velocity and localized tree decline. These results suggest that strong wind with large advection flux of $O_3$ may play a key role in the promotion of tree/forest decline at high mountain ridges and peaks.

Korea needs proper and rational public policies on conservation and use of forest land and other natural resources because of the accelerating expansion of national land developments in recent years. Unfortunately, there is no systematic planning system to support the needs. Generally, forest land use planning needs suitability analysis based on efficient land classification system. The goal of this study was to classify a forest land using multivariate satistical methods. A case study was carried out in winter of 1983 on a mountainous area higher than 100m above sea level located at Mt. Kwanak in Anyang -city, Kyung-gi-do (province). The study area was 19.80 km$^2$wide and was divided into 1, 383 Operational Taxonomic Units (OTU's) by a 120m$\times$120m grid. Fourteen descriptors were identified and quantified for each OTU from existing national land data : elevation, slope, aspect, terrain form, geologic material, surface soil permeability, topsoil type, depth of the solum, soil acidity, forest cover type, stand size class, stand age class, stand density class, and simple forest soil capability class. For this study, a FORTRAN IV program was written for input and output map data, and the computer statistics packages, SPSS and BMD, were used to perform the multivariate statistical analysis. Fourteen variables were analyzed to investigate the characteristics of their fire quench distribution and to estimate the correlation coefficients among them. Principal component analysis was executed to find the dimensions of forest land characteristics, and factor scores were used for proper samples of OTU throughout the study area. In order to develop the classes of forest land classification based on 102 surrogates, cluster and discriminant analyses of principal descriptor variable matrix were undertaken. Results obtained through a series of multivariate statistical analyses were as follows ; 1) Principal component analysis was proved to be a useful tool for data selection and identification of principal descriptor variables which represented the characteristics of forest land and facilitated the selection of samples.
Accurate classification of water area is an preliminary step to accurately analyze the flooded area and damages caused by flood. This step is especially useful for monitoring the region where annually repeating flood is a problem. The accurate estimation of flooded area can ultimately be utilized as a primary source of information for the policy decision. Although SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) imagery with its own energy source is sensitive to the water area, its shadow effect similar to the reflectance signature of the water area should be carefully checked before accurate classification. Especially when we want to identify small flood area with mountainous environment, the step for removing shadow effect turns out to be essential in order to accurately classify the water area from the SAR imagery. In this paper, the flood area was classified and monitored using multi-temporal RADARSAT SAR images of Ok-Chun and Bo-Eun located in Chung-Book Province taken in 12th (during the flood) and 19th (after the flood) of August, 1998. We applied several steps of geometric and radiometric calculations to the SAR imagery. First we reduced the speckle noise of two SAR images and then calculated the radar backscattering coefficient $(\sigma^0)$. After that we performed the ortho-rectification via satellite orbit modeling developed in this study using the ephemeris information of the satellite images and ground control points. We also corrected radiometric distortion caused by the terrain relief. Finally, the water area was identified from two images and the flood area is calculated accordingly. The identified flood area is analyzed by overlapping with the existing land use map.
Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) from satellites provides the opportunity to regularly incorporate microwave information into forest classification. Radar backscatter can improve classification accuracy, and SAR interferometry could provide improved thematic information through the use of coherence. This research examined the potential of using multi-temporal JERS-l SAR (L band) backscatter information and interferometry in distinguishing forest classes of mountainous areas in the Northeastern U.S. for future forest mapping and monitoring. Raw image data from a pair of images were processed to produce coherence and backscatter data. To improve the geometric characteristics of both the coherence and the backscatter images, this study used the interferometric techniques. It was necessary to radiometrically correct radar backscatter to account for the effect of topography. This study developed a simplified method of radiometric correction for SAR imagery over the hilly terrain, and compared the forest-type discriminatory powers of the radar backscatter, the multi-temporal backscatter, the coherence, and the backscatter combined with the coherence. Statistical analysis showed that the method of radiometric correction has a substantial potential in separating forest types, and the coherence produced from an interferometric pair of images also showed a potential for distinguishing forest classes even though heavily forested conditions and long time separation of the images had limitations in the ability to get a high quality coherence. The method of combining the backscatter images from two different dates and the coherence in a multivariate approach in identifying forest types showed some potential. However, multi-temporal analysis of the backscatter was inconclusive because leaves were not the primary scatterers of a forest canopy at the L-band wavelengths. Further research in forest classification is suggested using diverse band width SAR imagery and fusing with other imagery source.

In this paper, we propose a method to detect small unmanned aerial vehicles(UAVs) flying in a real-world environment. Small UAV signals are frequently obscured by clutter signals because UAVs usually fly at low altitudes over urban or mountainous terrain. Therefore, to obtain a desirable detection performance, clutter signals must be considered in addition to noise, and thus, a performance analysis of each clutter removal technique is required. The proposed detection process uses clutter removal and pulse integration methods to suppress clutter and noise signals, and then detects small UAVs by utilizing a constant false alarm rate detector. After applying three clutter removal techniques, we analyzed the performance of each technique in detecting small UAVs. Based on experimental data acquired in a real-world outdoor environment, we found it was possible to derive a clutter removal method suitable for the detection of small UAVs.

The Scientific balloon is a flight system that could recover an entire platform at the end of the mission. The recovery takes place mainly in low-density populated areas, taking into account for the possible damage to the human life and public safety. In Republic of Korea, on the other hand, marine recovery should be considered due to the dense mountainous terrain and restrictions of the peninsula. In this operating environment, the envelope must be recovered because of severe marine pollution that may occur after the splashdown. Therefore, in this study, the separation device that consists of a location tracker and the waterproof system were developed. The device includes data transmission/reception, separation, and waterproof systems which are manufactured considering the environmental condition of the Korea. The performance of the device and the trajectory of the envelope were verified by conducting a separation test of a 20km platform at a target altitude and the recovery of the zero-pressure balloon.

Pine wilt disease first appeared in Busan in 1998; it is a serious disease that causes enormous damage to pine trees. The Korean government enacted a special law on the control of pine wilt disease in 2005, which controls and prohibits the movement of pine trees in affected areas. However, existing forecasting and control methods have physical and economic challenges in reducing pine wilt disease that occurs simultaneously and radically in mountainous terrain. In this study, the authors present the use of a deep learning object recognition and prediction method based on visual materials using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to effectively detect trees suspected of being infected with pine wilt disease. In order to observe pine wilt disease, an orthomosaic was produced using image data acquired through aerial shots. As a result, 198 damaged trees were identified, while 84 damaged trees were identified in field surveys that excluded areas with inaccessible steep slopes and cliffs. Analysis using image segmentation (SegNet) and image detection (YOLOv2) obtained a performance value of 0.57 and 0.77, respectively.
