  • To determine the performance characteristics of motorcycle engine using biogas for practical use, the intake system of a 110 cc motorcycle engine is properly modified to operate with biogas as a fuel. Biogas is a potentially renewable fuel for replacing gasoline in future, but it has high percentage of $CO_2$ that could lead to slow the burning rate of biogas-air mixture and cause instability in combustion. Thus, the performance characteristics of biogas-fueled motorcycle engines could be different from those of gasoline motorcycle engines. In this paper, the important parameters of performance characteristics (such as: power output, thermal efficiency, fuel consumption, exhaust emission,${\cdots}$) of biogas-fueled motorcycle engine are studied and estimated with change of engine speed and load. The obtained results when operating with biogas are used to compare with that of gasoline fuel under the same operating conditions. Engine speed in the experimental is changed from 1500 rpm (idle-mode) up to 3500 rpm by a step of 500 rpm. Engine load is changed from zero to maximum load with the help of an exciting voltage device from generator-type dynamometer. The experimental results show that the tested engine operated with richer biogas-air mixture than that of gasoline-air mixture under the same test conditions. Biogas-fueled engine gives a higher fuel consumption and lower thermal efficiency under the same power output. Brake thermal efficiency of biogas engine is found to be about 3% lower than gasoline-fueled motorcycle engine for whole range of speed. Exhaust emission of biogas-fueled motorcycle engine (such as: CO, HC) is found to be lower than the limitation level of the emission standards of Vietnam for motorcycle engines (CO <4.5% HC <1200 ppm).

  • Most of the motorcycle engines have used carburetors in the fuel system, because of its simple structure and reliability but the fuel economy and the emissions of those engines are bad when we compared with automobile engines .To meet with the tighten emission regulations and the higher requirements for fuel economy, the application of the carburetor on the motorcycle engines would be limited. Therefore, it is important to develope a ECU control system for motorcycle engines. Since the fuel injection system is expensive, it is necessary to decrease the cost of ECU system for motorcycle engines, but the accuracy of the ECU control system should be increased as high as possible. In this paper, we studied about the AFS characteristics of motorcycle engine controled by indirect method.

  • The most typical fuel control devices of motorcycle engines have carburetors, they are simple in structure and reliable in work. Most of the motorcycle engines have used carburetors in the fuel system, but the fuel economy and the emissions of those engines are bad when we compared with automobile engines. According to stricter emission regulations and higher requirements for fuel economy, the application of the carburetor on the motorcycle engines would be limited. In this paper, we studied about the ECU of motorcycle engine controled by indirect method. A new engine system was designed and experiments were carried out. The experimental results for both carburetor type and ECU type were compared. Maximum torque of $1.053kg{\cdot}m$ at 6500rpm was measured. The engine torque controled using ECU was increased by $10\%$ compared with the carburetor type.

  • This study represents the temperature uniformity in catalytic converter. Present research model type is a monolithic catalytic converter. This type was been widely used for complying the regulations of pollutant emissions from automobiles. The mean experimental parameters are engine speed and ceramics monolith in the catalytic converter. The experimental test engine model used was the 124.1cc motorcycle engine. The experimental study using thermal imaging method shows the megaphone type model has larger effective area than the basic model. The rate of effective area in the basic model is about 8.9 % and the megaphone type model are 41.52 %, 34.60 %, 33.43 %, 25.43 %, 17.82 % according to the diffuser angle $4^{\circ}\;to\;8^{\circ}$. In conclusion, the megaphone type monolithic converter has higher efficiency of reducing the pollution with less noise compared to the basic shape. We believe this will be very important as a design guide of the advanced motorcycle.

  • This study investigates the characteristics of spray, such as evaporation rate and spray trajectory, for a 4-hole injector which is applied to a 4-valve motorcycle gasoline engine. Three dimensional, unsteady, compressible flow and spray within the intake-port and cylinder have been simulated using the VECTIS code. Spray characteristics were investigated at 6000 rpm engine speed. Furthermore, we visualized fuel behavior in the intake-port using a CCD camera synchronized with a stroboscope in order to compare with the analytical results. Boundary and intial conditions were employed by complete 1-D simulation of the engine using the WAVE code. Fuel was injected into the intake-port at two time intervals relative to the position of the intake valves so that the spray arrived when the valves were closed and fully open. The results showed that the trajectory of the spray was directed towards the lower wall of the port with injection against the closed valves. With open valve injection, a large portion of the fuel was lifted by the co-flowing air towards the upper half of the port and this was confirmed by simulation and visualization.

  • This paper presents the motorcycle inspection standards development on the vehicle identification, engine and transmission, tyres and wheels, steering and suspension, and brake system. 187 real-world motorcycles are visually and mechanically inspected according to the developed inspection standards. The non-compliance rate of the vehicle identification is 20.3% and main causes are insecure, damaged, and not clearly visible number plate. The non-compliance rate of the brake system is 15.5% and main cause is failing to meet the brake performance requirements. The motorcycle inspections standards are improved reflecting 187 cases of real-world motorcycle inspection results.

  • Recently, the international regulations about the exhaust emissions of the motorcycle have been strengthened. The electrically controlled fuel injection type motorcycle has been emphasized to meet with this regulation. However, since the pulsation phenomenon happens in the intake port of the motorcycle because of the characteristic of high speed and the smaller layout than the passenger car, there are many difficulties to select the factor about control parameters needed to develop the ECU system. In this paper, the pulsation values measured from the engine test were compared with the calculated one by WAVE, and it was analyzed the pulsation characteristic according to the driving condition and estimated the mass flow rate. This research showed that the lowest point of the pressure gets lowin the low load and the pulsation of pressure were increased in the high load. Also, the simulation program was verified by showing good prediction of the pulsation and air mass flow rate.

  • The engine oil life was examined experimentally for small size single cylinder engines. This study was conducted in the laboratory. An Eddy Current type engine dynamometer was used with a motorcycle and a cultivator engine. Physical and chemical properties of used oil was analyzed to examine the oil life. Flushed oil was used for the reference instead of the new oil. It were found that deterioration of dynamic viscosity and anti-wear property of engine oil was due to dilution by fuel not depletion of ZDTP.
