  • In this paper, EP-Kalina cycle applying liquid-vapor ejector and motive pump is newly proposed. In this EP-Kalina cycle, the liquid-vapor ejector is used to increase pressure difference between inlet and outlet of the turbine. Also the motive pump enhances the performance of liquid-vapor ejector, resulting in increase of system efficiency of OTEC cycles. The comparison cycles in this study are basic, Kalina, EKalina and EP-Kalina ones. The pump work, net power, APRe, APRc, TPP and system efficiency of each cycle are compared. In case of net power, EP-Kalina cycle is lowest among the cycles due to the application of the motive pump. But, the net power difference of cycles seems to be minor since the pump work of cycles is merely about 1kW, compared to turbine gross power of 20kW. The system efficiency of EP-Kalina cycle shows 3.22%, relatively 44% higher than that of basic OTEC cycle. Therefore, the system efficiency is increased by applying the liquid-vapor ejector and the motive pump. Additional performance analysis is necessary to optimize the proposed EP-Kalina cycle.

  • The gas jet pumps serve to preduce a vacuum or can be used as gas jet compressors. These are operated on the same principle as a steam jet vacuum pump : in the driving nozzle the pressure energy of the motive medium is converted into the kinetic energy. In the diffuser the driving jet mixes with the suction medium and the kinetic energy is reconverted into the pressure enegy. The application fields of gas jet ejectors are the evacuation of siphoning installations, the elevation of liquids, the production of vacuum filters, the vacuum supporting airlift system, the evacuation of the suction line of centrifugal pumps and the ventilation of the dangerous gases to the atmosphere. The performance of gas jet ejector is influenced strongly to velocity coefficient of motive nozzle, the distance between the motive outlet to the diffuser inlet and the dimensions of diffuser. This study is performed for the computer aided design of gas jet ejectors in future. Through the present experiments, it is known that the velocity coefficient of the motive air nozzle ranges from 0.91 to 0.95 and the maximum efficiency of gas jet ejector is 24.6%.

  • Unlike eukaryotic efflux pumps energized by ATPase bacterial efflux pumps are energized by the proton motive force. That is the reason why CCCP, an inhibitor of proton motive forcer is widely used to study the bacterial efflux pump. In many cases, efflux systems have been observed only in quinolone-resistant bacteria. Most of the quinolone-susceptible strains have been found to maintain little efflux pump. However some susceptible bacteria skewed the increased intracellular quinolone concentration only at a low concentration (0.01 or 0.1 mM) but net at a high concentration (1 mM) of CCCP. If bacterial cells were killed at high concentrations of CCCP and lost the integrity of their membranes, the intracellular quinolone would leak out from cells with no efflux system. The efflux pump system in the quinolone-susceptible strains could net be detected at the same concentration used for resistant bacteria. To test this hypothesist the intracellular quinolone concentration in the quinolone-susceptible and -resistant strains of Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus was assayed at various concentrations of CCCP. Since the effect of CCCP is very rapid, the survival of bacteria was observed by assaying the DNA synthesis in 5 min. In the case of E. coli, but not P. aeruginosa or S. aureus, the quinolone susceptible strain was more susceptible to CCCP than the quinolone resistant ones, especially when the incubation with CCCP was extended. Decrease of the intracellular quinolone concentration resulted in a false result-no or weak efflux system in the quinolone susceptible strains. Results suggested that the concentration of CCCP should be optimized in order to detect the efflux system in the quinolone susceptible strains of E. coli.

  • Energy is motive power that makes convenient society. But, our country's energy is depending on most import. Also, energy and environmental issue are important problem in community of nations. The purpose of this study is to analysis the energy consumption and environmental load of EHP and GHP in Medium and small-scaled office building. The annual energy consumption used to cooling and heating by EHP was 10 percent more than GHP. And annual energy cost of EHP was 33 percent more expensive than GHP. But, Compared to the annual $CO_2$ emission, EHP was 6 percent less than GHP. Therefore, equipment selection should be consider environmental load as well as energy consumption and cost.

  • Multidrug resistance, especially multidrug efflux mechanisms that extrude structurally unrelated cytotoxic compounds from the cell by multidrug transporters, is a serious problem and one of the main reasons for the failure of therapeutic treatment of infections by pathogenic microorganisms as well as of cancer cells. Streptococcus mutans is considered one of the primary causative agents of dental caries and periodontal disease, which comprise the most common oral diseases. A fragment of chromosomal DNA from S. mutans KCTC3065 was cloned using Escherichia coli KAM32 as host cells lacking major multidrug efflux pumps. Although E. coli KAM32 cells were very sensitive to many antimicrobial agents, the transformed cells harboring a recombinant plasmid became resistant to several structurally unrelated antimicrobial agents such as tetracycline, kanamycin, rhodamin 6G, ampicillin, acriflavine, ethidium bromide, and tetraphenylphosphonium chloride. This suggested that the cloned DNA fragment carries a gene encoding a multidrug efflux pump. Among 49 of the multidrug-resistant transformants, we report the functional gene cloning and characterization of the function of one multidrug efflux pump, namely MdeA from S. mutans, which was expressed in E. coli KAM32. Judging from the structural and biochemical properties, we concluded that MdeA is the first cloned and characterized multidrug efflux pump using the proton motive force as the energy for efflux drugs.

  • Liquid ejectors are widely used as marine pumps, inducer stage for the boiler feed water pump, boiler recirculating pump, cooling water recirculating pump in boiling water type nuclear reactor and a deep well pump, because of their high working confidence and simplicity. Furthermore, it requires only a modest net positive suction head for cavitation-free operation and it can be installed in remote location from mechanical power source. It is not easy to presume the friction losses, because it is complicately affected by area ratio, flowrate ratio, nozzle spacing, throat length, shape of liquid ejector and so on. Therefore, the optimization of liquid ejector design is still dependent, to a large extent, on the experimental results and empirical procedures. On the design of the liquid ejector, the area ratio and the nondimensional throat length are the most important design factors among the mentioned above. In this experiment, the effects of the area ratio and the nondimensional throat length to ejector efficiency are carried out systematically by the combination of 4 kinds of motive nozzle and 2 kinds of throat length. In this paper, the present experimental results are compared with the calculated ones by the previous computer aided design program based on one dimensional flow equation. And also, an empirical equation for the working limit of liquid ejector is reported.

  • In this paper, we propose a remote control system which is used by internet network system in the small water booster supply. So far, TMTC(Tele Metering Tele Control) has been used to control and monitor small water booster pump. But it is possible and easy to control and observe local booster panel with the rapid development of internet, This new system is to provide operators and managers with sufficient information and control in order to implement the operation in an efficient and economical way. This system consists of three parts that are controller, netpump server and netview client. Controller has a dual architecture. The motive for installing controller is the continuous production and supply of drinking water.

  • For permanent magnet brushless DC motors used for high speed fuel pumps, torque ripple is an important origin of vibration, acoustic noise and speed fluctuation. In this paper, the output torque profile of a PM motor with one phase energized is decomposed into the commutation torque, the reluctance torque and the armature reaction torque according to their source origins. It verifies that the output torque profile is qualitatively equivalent to the BEMF profile for low reluctance motors. This paper discusses the effect of magnet pole shaping and magnet arc length on the output torque and torque ripple. A magnet edge shaping is proposed to design a trapezoidal BEMF motor without torque ripple, with minimal sacrifice of the maximum output torque.

  • In the present study, 20 kW turbine for OTEC with a ejector and a motive pump is designed and performance prediction is implemented by means of CFD. The meridional analysis for initial geometry and CFD for detail design are used to design the turbine. This turbine has about 90.9% efficiency and 28.47 kW power at 15,000 rpm and pressure ratio of 1.53. Homogeneous mixture model is used because two phase flow can be occurred in the turbine. Performance evaluation is carried out and then results are presented by plotting of power, mass flow rate and efficiency as varying pressure ratio and rotational speed.
