The Educational Implementation of e-Learning System Applying the Theory of Motivation - With Focus on "Interest" and the "Self-Determination Theory" (동기 이론이 적용된 e-Learning system의 교육적 실천: 흥미와 SDT를 중심으로)

  • This study examines and measures the enhancement of intrinsic motivation in learners who have been part of the e-Learning system (www.englishbuddy.kr) for elementary-level English learning, developed based on the systematic application of the motivation theory as dictated by 'interest' and 'self-determination' and put into practice at 3,100 private tutoring institutions. According to the survey conducted on 328 learners in the e-Learning system inspired by the motivation theory and on 150 learners in other English programs, the former was found to have stimulated 'interest' and satisfied 'psychological desire' in the learners, leading to the development of 'specific strategies to motivate learners.' The study has clearly identified how learners are better motivated in the e-Learning environment, demonstrating its contributions to advancing e-Learning, building a practical e-Learning system based on a systematic motivation theory defined by 'interest' and 'self-determination,' and applying the system to some 16,000 learners at 3,100 private tutoring institutions.

The Influence of Learning Cycle Emphasized Exploration on Elementary School Students' Science Learning Motivation and Scientific Attitude (탐색을 강조한 순환학습이 초등학생들의 과학학습 동기 및 과학적 태도에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to see the influences of science class applying learning cycle emphasized exploration on science learning motivation and scientific attitude of elementary students. The results drawn from this analysis were as below. Firstly, positive relationship was found between science learning motivation and science class applying learning cycle emphasized exploration among the research group. This shows that science learning motivation was improved by science class applying learning cycle emphasized exploration. It indicates that science class applying learning cycle emphasized exploration is effective in improving science learning motivations. Secondly, positive relationship was found between scientific attitude and science class applying learning cycle emphasized exploration among the research group and this means that science class applying learning cycle that emphasizes exploration stimulates intellectual curiosity of elementary school students and improves their scientific attitude. Thirdly, students thought that science class applying learning cycle emphasized exploration was very effective to improve their satisfaction, interest, participation in their science classes. Above results show that science class applying learning cycle emphasized exploration is highly effective for elementary students. Thus, it is needed to utilize science class applying learning cycle emphasized exploration to current science class as it can promote wider scientific activities among elementary school students.

An Augmented Reality-Based Digital App as an Educational Tool for Foreign Language Learning and the Evaluation of Its Learning Effect: Towards an Examination of Learning Motivation, Learning Satisfaction, and Learning Engagement (증강현실(Augmented Reality) 기술 기반의 글자교구재 디지털 앱 개발 사례와 교육효과 평가: 학습동기, 학습만족도, 학습몰입도를 중심으로)

  • The present work aimed to present the development of 'Funt', the augmented reality-based digital app as an educational tool for foreign language learning. Our work further evaluated the learning efficacy of the tool by the assessment of the three dependent measures including learning motivation, learning satisfaction, and learning involvement. With a learning app of 'Funt', students can use AR app to access recognition-based or location-based experiences such that any objects, artifacts, or media appear to be in the app. Students are then able to interact with the digital content by manipulating it to learn more about it. Students's engagement should also increase when they create their own experience in AR to demonstrate their understanding of a particular concept or words. Learning effects were evaluated on survey data collected from a hundred respondents aging six to nine years. One-group design for pre-test and post-test was utilized to examine the differences of learning efficacy by comparing the non-'Funt' group and the Funt group scores. A pairwise t-Test was performed for pairwise comparisons between two learning groups. The results indicate that the 'Funt' group scored significantly higher than the non-'Funt' group in the measures of learning motivation, learning satisfaction, and learning involvement. Overall, our results suggest that 'Funt' attracted the students' attention, provided them with a fun context to learn English vocabulary, and develop positive motivation and satisfaction towards vocabulary learning through AR technology.

  • In this study, the SCAMPER method which is a creative thinking method is applied in the food and beverage class of a specialized high school NCS study module to enhance creative thinking and investigate the influence on learning motivation of students. For verification, 10 sessions of 50 minutes classes were performed on 1, 2 grade students in H high school located in Gyeonggi-do Yangju City from August to November 2015 subject to 54 subjects in the experiment group and 54 subject in the control group. To look into the influence of the NCS food and beverage practice class using the SCAMPER method on learning motivation, pre post survey investigation was conducted on the students for measurements through surveys to deduct conclusions. As a result, it was verified that the NCS food and beverage practice class using the SCAMPER method had positive influence on the learning motivation of specialized high school students and positive change was also found in the awareness of SCAMPER method using classes and creative activities in the students. In this study, the influence of the NCS food and beverage practice class using the SCAMPER method on learning motivation subject to specialized high school students is investigated to have meaning as data to expand the research range of NCS food and beverage practice education.

Relationship between ARCS (Attention, Relevance, Confidence, and Satisfaction) Learning Motivation Factors and Class Effectiveness Inherent in Problem-Based Learning Classes (문제중심학습 수업에 내재된 학습동기 유발요인과 수업효과성의 관계)

  • The current study aimed to find the relationship between attention, relevance, confidence, and satisfaction (ARCS) learning motivation and class effectiveness inherent in problem-based learning (PBL) classes designed for dental and nursing students. Seventy-nine participants responded to survey items for motivation and class effectiveness after completion of their classes. The study findings were as follows. First, the differences among the $dental^{**}$, $clinical^{**}$, and $nursing^{**}$ PBL classes were identified in terms of class effectiveness (F=3.63, p<0.05) and academic achievement (F=13.9, p<0.01). Second, three learning motivation factors-satisfaction (t=4.07, p<0.01), confidence (t=2.84, p=0.01), and relevance (t=2.96, p<0.01)-appeared to determine class effectiveness in the abovementioned order. Only attention (t=2.02, p=0.05) was significantly related to academic achievement. Third, the relationship between hours of learner contribution to the PBL tasks and academic achievement was statistically significant. Therefore, we suggest the incorporation of ARCS motivation factors in PBL classes on the basis of the characteristics of each major and grade.

Distribution Performance of Practice Midwives Through Entrepreneurial Leadership, Motivation, Organizational Learning and Commitment

  • Purpose: to explore more deeply the variables of knowledge construction in influencing performance, through entrepreneurial leadership, motivation, organizational learning, and commitment to the performance of midwives in providing maximum service to patients and the community. Research design, data and methodology: using quantitative methods with hypothesis testing, data was obtained through direct visits and surveys to midwife practice locations through coordination with the Indonesian Midwives Association (IBI) regarding surveys to be carried out and needed. Results: there are 3 direct paths that have significant value. The path between the motivation variable to commitment was found to be significant, then the effect of organizational learning on commitment was found to be significant and finally the effect of the path variable from commitment to distribution performance was found to be significant. The indirect effect was found to be insignificant for the influence of entrepreneurial leadership through commitment to distribution performance, but different results found a significant indirect effect for the relationship between motivation through commitment to performance and organizational learning through commitment to distribution performance. Conclusion: there is a high commitment to the work of midwives, commitment as a good mediation in influencing distribution performance between organizational learning and work motivation.

Learning strategies and deep learning (학습전략과 심층학습)

  • Learning strategies are defined as behaviors and thoughts that a learner engages in during learning and that are intended to influence the learner's encoding process. Today, demands for teaching how to learn increase, because there is a lot of complex material which is delivered to students. But learning strategies shouldn't be identified as tricks of students for achieving high scores in exams. Cognitive researchers and theorists assume that learning strategies are related to two types of learning processing, which are described as 'surface learning' and 'deep learning'. In addition learning strategies are associated with learning motivation. Students with 'meaning orientation' who struggle for deep learning, are intrinsically motivated, whereas students with 'reproduction orientation' or 'achieving orientation' are extrinsically motivated. Therefore, to foster active learning and intrinsic motivation of students, it isn't enough to just teach how to learn. Changes of curriculum and assessment methods, that stimulate deep learning and curiosity of students are needed with educators and learners working cooperatively.

Effects of a Simulation-based High-risk neonatal Care Education on Learning Satisfaction, Class Participation, Learning Motivation and Clinical Competency in Nursing Students (고위험 신생아간호 시뮬레이션 교육이 간호학생의 수업만족도, 수업참여도, 학습동기 및 임상수행능력에 미치는 효과)

  • The aim of this study was to verify the effects of simulation-based high-risk neonatal care education on learning satisfaction, class participation, learning motivation and clinical competency of Nursing Students. The participants were 118 nursing students in year 3 in D college. The questionaire survey on learning satisfaction, class participation, learning motivation and clinical competency were conducted before and after education to the nursing students. The data was analysed by the SPSS WIN 17.0 program. The results showed that the scores of learning satisfaction, class participation, learning motivation and clinical competency were significantly higher than before education. Also, clinical competency have significant relationships with learning satisfaction, class participation and learning motivation.

The Effect of Modular Robot Programming Education on Learning Motivation of Informatics Curriculum (모듈형 로봇 프로그래밍 교육이 정보교과 학습동기에 미치는 영향)

  • This study examines the impact of modular robot programming education on middle school informatics curriculum learning motivation. For this purpose, the experiment was conducted with a experimental group of 25 people and a control group of 25 people, and modular robot programming education and learning motivation test were used as research tools. As a result of processing the results of the learning motivation test paper with the independent sample t-test and the paired t-test, the experimental group had 9.36 points higher learning motivation than the control group and 15.44 points higher than the pre-test. In particular, it significantly affected the improvement of all the sub-components of the learning motivation, and among them, it greatly affected the enhancement of attention, relevance and satisfaction. In conclusion, it can be seen that modular robot programming education has a positive effect on improving students' motivation to learn the informatics curriculum.

The Mediating Effects of Learning Motivation on the Association between Perceived Stress and Positive-Deactivating Academic Emotions in Nursing Students Undergoing Skills Training

  • Purpose: Nursing students experience a high degree of perceived stress during skills training. The resulting academic sentiment is worthy of research. This study examined the learning motivation as a mediator in the association between perceived stress and positive deactivating academic emotions in nursing students undergoing skills training. Methods: A survey was conducted on 386 third-year undergraduate nursing students at a university in Changchun, China, in 2017. The survey included the items on perceived stress, learning motivation during nursing skill training, and general academic emotion. There were 381 valid responses (response rate=98.7%). Based on the results of partial correlation and stepwise multiple regression equations, the study examined the mediation model between perceived stress, learning motivation and positive-deactivating academic emotions using process 2.16 (a plug-in specifically used to test mediation or moderation effect in SPSS). Results: There was a significant negative correlation between students' perceived stress and learning motivation during nursing skills training and positive-deactivating academic emotions. Nervousness, loss of control, and interest in developing reputation had significant predictive effects on positive-deactivating academic emotions. The mediating model was well supported. Conclusion: Learning motivation during nursing skills training lessened the damage of perceived stress on positive-deactivating academic emotions. Improving students' motivation to learn could reduce their perceived stress and build more positive emotions. Positive emotions during learning played an important role in helping nursing students improve skills and enhance their nursing competence.
