In H.264, sub-pel motion estimation (ME) has strong effect when coding video sequences. 1/4-pel performs better at low bitrate while 1/8-pel gives better results at high bitrate. In this paper, a variable sub-pixel motion vector resolution based on block mode motion estimation method is proposed. Experiment results show that the proposed method can take the advantage of 1/4-pel at low bitrate and 1/8-pel at high bitrate. In addition to that, time is reduced from 14% to 53% compared to KTA1.3 with 1/8-pel motion vector (MV) resolution.
In this papar, we propose a new motion estimation and coding technique using adaptive motion vector resolution. Currently, HEVC encodes a video using 1/4 motion vector resolution. If there are high texture regions in a picture, HEVC can't get a performance enough. So, we insert additional 1-bit flag meaning whether motion vector resolution is 1/4 or 1/8 in PU syntax. Therefore, decoder can recognize the transmitted motion vector resolution. Experimental results show that maximum coding efficiency gain of the proposed method is up to 5.3% in luminance and 7.9% in chrominance. Average computional time complexity is increased about 33% in encoder and up to 5% in decoder.

Due to the temporal correlation of the image sequence, the motion vector of a block is highly related to the motion vector of the same coordinate block in the previous image frame. If we can obtain useful and enough information from the motion vector of the same coordinate block of the previous image frames, the total number of search points used to find the motion vector of the current block may be reduced significantly. Using that idea, an efficient new predicted direction search algorithm (PDSA) for block matching motion estimation is proposed in this paper.
There is the temporal correlation of the video sequence between the motion vector of current block and the motion vector of previous block. In this paper, we propose the improved diamond search pattern using an motion vector prediction candidate search point by the predicted motion information from the same block of the previous frame. Simulation results show that PSNR(Peak-to-Signal Noise Ratio) values are improves as high as high as 14~24% in terms of average number of search point per motion vector estimation and improved about 0.02~0.37dB on an average except the full search(FS) algorithm.

A motion vector re-estimation algorithm for image downscaling in discrete consine transform domain is presented. Kernel functions are difined using SAD (Aum of Absolute Difference) and edge information of a macroblock. The proposed method uses these kernel functions to re-estimate a new motion vector of the downscaled image. The motion vectors from the incoming bitstream of transcoder are reused to reduce computation burden of the block-matching motion estimation, and we also reuse the given motion vectors. Several experiments in this paper show that the computation efficiency and the PSNR (Peak Signal to Noise Ratio) and better than the previous methods.

In H.264, 7 modes {16${\times}$16, 16${\times}$8, 8${\times}$16, 8${\times}$8, 8${\times}$4, 4${\times}$8, 4${\times}$4) are used to enhance the coding efficiency. The motion vector estimation with 7 modes may require huge computing time. In this paper, to speed up the motion vector estimation procedure while the high image quality remains, we propose a motion vector refinement scheme using the temporary motion vector generated with little computation. The proposed estimation process consists of three phases: Mode decision for a 16${\times}$16 macroblock, Composing a temporary motion vector, Refinement of the temporary motion vector. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method by computer simulation. In the results, the encoding time consumed by the proposed scheme has been reduced significantly while the encoded video quality remains unchanged.

In this paper, a hierarchical motion vector estimation algorithm using pyramidal structure is proposed. Using a smaller measurement window at each level of a pyramid than that of the conventional scheme, the proposed algorithm, based on the TSS(three step search), reduces the computational complexity greatly with its performance comparable to that of the TSS. By increasing the number of cnadidate motion vectors which are to be used as the initial search points for motion vector estimation at the next level, the performance improves further. Then the computational complexity of the proposed hierarchical algorithm depends on the number of candidate motion vectors, with its PSNR (peak signal to noise ratio) ranging between those of the TSS and the full search method. The simulation results with two different block sizes and various test sequences are given and its hardware implementation is also sketched.

Recently we need a faster and more accurate motion vector search algorithm for ASIC(Application Specific IC) or small systems. Block motion estimation using Full Search(FS) algorithm provides the best visual quality and PSNR, but it requires intensive computations. The previously proposed fast algorithms reduced the number of computations by limiting the number of searching locations. This is accomplished at the expense of less accuracy of motion estimation and gives rise to an appreciably higher SAD(Sum of Absolute Difference) for motion compensated images. In this paper we exploit the spatial correlation of motion vectors and present a fast motion estimation scheme which uses the predicted motion vector(PMV). The PMV scheme is more clear and simpler than the previously proposed algorithms which also use adjacent motion vectors. Simulation results with standard video sequences show that the PMV scheme is faster and more accurate than other algorithms such as Nearest-Neighbors Search(NNS) algorithm.
In this paper we propose a new frame rate up conversion scheme which is used to overcome the motion blur problem of liquid crystal display caused by its slow response. The conventional bilateral motion estimation method which is mainly used in the frame rate up conversion scheme has a drawback that it cannot find true motion vector if there are blocks with simple texture in the search range. To solve this problem, a texture adaptive bilateral motion estimation method that increases cost value of block with simple texture is proposed. Also a motion estimation scheme that utilizes neighboring motion vector effectively is proposed to reduce computation time required to estimate motion. Since the proposed scheme does not apply all available motion vectors within the search range, the execution time of frame rate up conversion can be reduced dramatically. Experimental results show that the interpolated frame image quality of the proposed method is improved in subjective as well as objective view point compared with that of the conventional method.
