  • Motion estimation is crucial in a remote control for its convenience or accuracy. Time delays, however, can occur in the problem because data communication is required through a network. In this paper, state estimation problem with uncertain time delayed measurements is addressed. In dynamic system with noise, after taking measurements, it often requires some time until that is available in the filter algorithm. Standard filters not considering this time delays cannot be used since the current measurement is related with a past state. These delayed measurements are solved with augmented extended Kalman filter, and the uncertainty of delayed time is also resolved based on an explicit formulation. The proposed method is analyzed and verified by simulations.

  • Excessive motion of the ship in rough sea would affect body's fatigue, cognitive ability, motion sickness, and the proficiency of activity. Among them symptoms of motion sickness are similar to fatigue and nausea. Motion sickness causes sudden degradations of ability to perform tasks in physical and psychological aspects, and causes delays or failure in mental activity, and also takes a significant amount of time recovering. In this study, questionnaire for MSI(Motion Sickness Incidence) survey was taken for the students aboard the training ship of Kaya to the open sea far from land. Motion sickness analysis was performed as comparing the results of questionnaire based on sea state, incident angle, economical speed, and location in the ship.

  • This paper presents an analytical method to investigate the stability of FDBs (fluid dynamic bearings) considering the tilting motion. The perturbed equations of motion are derived with respect to translational and tilting motion for the general rotor-bearing system with five degrees of freedom. The Reynolds equations and their perturbed equations are solved by using the FEM in order to calculate the pressure, load capacity, and the stiffness and damping coefficients. This research introduces the radius of gyration to the equations of notion in order to express the mass moment of interia with respect to the critical mass. Then the critical mass of FDBs is determined by solving the eigenvalue problem of the linear equations of motion. This research is numerically validated by comparing the stability chart of FDBs with the time response of the whirl radius obtained from the direct integration of the equations of motion. This research shows that the tilting motion is one of the major design considerations to determine the stability of rotating system. It also shows that the stability of FDBs considering only translation is overestimated in comparison with the stability of FDBs considering both translational and tilting motion.

  • The purpose of this study was to present the basic data on improving the skills for 3 junior high school national badminton players in clear and drop motion through the 3-dimensional image analysis. Therefore, the results of this study are as follows: 1. In the duration times per phase, subject C relatively showed a similar time between clear and drop motion. Accordingly, C took a more effective motion than A and B. 2. In the velocities of racket head, subject A and C showed similar changes relatively. However, in case of subject B, the velocity was decreased before back swing(E2) and increased until impact(E3). 3. Regardless of clear and drop motion, the changing phases of joint angle for wrist and elbow showed similar changes comparatively. 4. In the angles of upper body, clear motion was average 85.0 degree and drop one was average 80.7 degree during the impact(E3). Hence, it showed that drop motion hit the ball bowing the upper body more than clear one. 5. In the angles of racket head, clear motion was average 87.7 degree and drop one was average 85.6 degree during the impact(E3). Consequently, drop motion was impacted forward more than clear one.

  • This paper proposes a fast motion estimation algorithm based on motion speed and multiple initial center points. The proposed method predicts initial search points by means of the spatio-temporal neighboring motion vectors. A dynamic search pattern based on the motion speed and the predicted initial center points is proposed to quickly obtain the motion vector. Due to the usage of the spatio-temporal information and the dynamic search pattern, the proposed method greatly accelerates the search speed while keeping a good predicted image quality. Experimental results show that the proposed method has a good predicted image quality in terms of PSNR with less searching time comparing with the Full Search, New Three-Step Search, and Four-Step Search.

  • This paper proposes an adaptive motion estimation algorithm using the temporal continuity of motion. We set up a squared global search region (GSR), which basically corresponds to the search region of FSA, and non-squared adaptive local search regions (LSRs), the positions for which are predicted by the motion vectors of the temporal neighbor blocks, are constructed in the GSR. The previous frame blocks that possibly have effects on the current block are to be the temporal neighbor blocks. Because motion estimation is only performed in the areas made by LSRs, we can estimate motion more correctly and reduce processing time. Experimental results show that the proposed method can enhance visual qualities with significant reductions of complexity by reducing search regions, when compared to the conventional methods.

  • In this paper, novel power-aware motion estimation is proposed for low-power multimedia communication. In the video compression, motion estimation dominates the total power consumption, where better performance usually requires more power consumption. Among several motion estimation algorithms with different performance and power, the proposed motion estimation adaptively selects the optimal algorithm during run-time, considering the trade-off between performance and power. The proposed motion estimation can be easily applied to various motion estimation algorithms with negligible computation or hardware overhead. According to simulation results, the proposed motion estimation reduces the power consumption to 1/15.7~1/5.6 without performance degradation, when compared to the conventional algorithms.

  • The three-step search(TSS) algorithm, a simple and gradual motion estimation algorithm, has been widely used in some low bit-rate video compression. We propose a new fast block motion estimation algorithm using the characteristics of motion in search region. Most of motion vectors exist in the center region of search area, so the notion in that region is examined more closely than TSS in this paper. Also in a search step, motion vector is estimated in the local area which is not overlapped with the search area in previous step, considering the all possible direction of motion. Therefore, we get the better motion estimation and reduce computational time in compared with the conventional methods.

  • Since robot industry growing, the machine that could move with multi-DOF has been studied in many industrial fields. Spherical motor is one of the multi-DOF machine that doesn't need gear for multi-DOF motion. Unlike conventional motor, spherical motor can not only rotate on the shaft axis (rotating motion), but tilt the shaft with 2-DOF motion (positioning motion). In the typical type of spherical motor, one coil took part in positioning motion and rotating motion at the same time. As the result, the control algorithm was complex. To solve this problem, this study proposed a novel type of coil on the stator. The coils were separated for positioning motion and rotating motion. Thus the linkage flux of rotating coil didn't be affected the positioning angle. In this paper, comparing the back-EMF of typical and novel type was conducted and the driving experiment was carried out as the positioning angle. From the experiment result, the performance of proposed spherical motor could be verified.

  • High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) suffers from high computational complexity due to its quad-tree structure in motion estimation (ME). This paper exposes an adaptive search range decision algorithm for accelerating HEVC integer-pel ME on GPU which estimates the optimal search range (SR) using a MAP (Maximum A Posteriori) estimator. There are three main contributions; First, we define the motion feature as the standard deviation of motion vector difference values in a CTU. Second, a MAP estimator is proposed, which theoretically estimates the motion feature of the current CTU using the motion feature of a temporally adjacent CTU and its SR without any data dependency. Thus, the SR for the current CTU is parallelly determined. Finally, the values of the prior distribution and the likelihood for each discretized motion feature are computed in advance and stored at a look-up table to further save the computational complexity. Experimental results show in conventional HEVC test sequences that the proposed algorithm can achieves high average time reductions without any subjective quality loss as well as with little BD-bitrate increase.
