In many of microdevices a part of a microbeam is covered by a piezoelectric layer. Depend on the application a DC or AC voltage is applied between upper and lower side of the piezoelectric layer. A common method in many of previous works for evaluating the response of these structures is discretizing by Galerkin method. In these works often single mode shape of a uniform microbeam i.e. the microbeam without piezoelectric layer has been used as comparison function, and so the convergence of the solution has not been verified. In this paper the Galerkin method is used for discretization, and a comprehensive analysis on the convergence of solution of equation that is discretized using this comparison function is studied for both clamped-clamped and clamped-free microbeams. The static and dynamic solution resulted from Galerkin method is compared to the modal expansion solution. In addition the static solution is compared to an exact solution. It is denoted that the required numbers of uniform microbeam mode shapes for convergence of static solution due to DC voltage depends on the position and thickness of deposited piezoelectric layer. It is shown that when the clamped-clamped microbeam is coated symmetrically by piezoelectric layer, then the convergence for static solution may be obtained using only first mode. This result is valid for clamped-free case when it is covered by piezoelectric layer from left clamped side to the right. It is shown that when voltage is AC then the number of required uniform microbeam shape mode for convergence is much more than the number of required mode in modal expansion due to the dynamic effect of piezoelectric layer. This difference increases by increasing the piezoelectric thickness, the closeness of the excitation frequency to natural frequency and decreasing the damping coefficient. This condition is often indefeasible in microresonator system. It is concluded that discreitizing the equation of motion using one mode shape of uniform microbeam as comparison function in many of previous works causes considerable errors.

In this paper, we develop face and hand tracking for sign language recognition system. The system is divided into two stages; the initial and tracking stages. In initial stage, we use the skin feature to localize face and hands of signer. The ellipse model on CbCr space is constructed and used to detect skin color. After the skin regions have been segmented, face and hand blobs are defined by using size and facial feature with the assumption that the movement of face is less than that of hands in this signing scenario. In tracking stage, the motion estimation is applied only hand blobs, in which first and second derivative are used to compute the position of prediction of hands. We observed that there are errors in the value of tracking position between two consecutive frames in which velocity has changed abruptly. To improve the tracking performance, our proposed algorithm compensates the error of tracking position by using adaptive search area to re-compute the hand blobs. The experimental results indicate that our proposed method is able to decrease the prediction error up to 96.87% with negligible increase in computational complexity of up to 4%.
This paper presents a decentralized adaptive controller design for a Magnetically Levitated Fine Manipulator to follow the given trajectory as close as possible in spite of coupling effects between motion axes(degree of freedoms or subsystems). The present controller consists of two parts: the model reference controls based on known subsystems and the local adaptive controls. The former stabilizes the motion of the manipulator so as to follow that of the reference model. The latter reduces tracking errors due to coupling disturbances by adjusting the local gains to such levels that override interactions and assure the stability of the overall system. Through several experimental results, it has been shown that the decentralized adaptive control scheme has better tracking performances comparing to the PID controller case as well as good disturbance(coupling) rejection property.

In this paper, we propose a 3D shape restoration system which measures height and surface shape of transparent ITO glass and delivers errors in focal length and incident angle of laser beam to femto-second laser micromachining. The proposed system is composed of a line scan laser, a high resolution camera, a linear motion guide synchronized to image capturing, and a control station. Also, we define the sensitivity indices that represent a relation between measurement error and a position of a camera and scan laser, and utilize it for optimum design. The results of the proposed system are compared with results of SPM(Scanning Probe Microscope) and prove the usefulness of the system.

In this paper, we propose a new depth map based distributed multi-view video coding algorithm through an efficient side information generation. A distributed video coding scheme corrects errors between an original image and side information generated at a decoder by using channel coding techniques. Therefore, the more accurate side information is generated, the better performance of distributed video coding scheme is achieved. In the proposed algorithm, a distributed video coding scheme is applied to multi-view video coding based on depth map. Side information is also generated from images of adjacent views through 3D warping by using a depth map and is also combined with MCTI(motion compensated temporal interpolation) which uses images on a temporal axis, and 3D warping. Experimental results show that side information generated by using the proposed algorithm has 0.97dB better average PSNR compared with using MCTI and 3D warping separated. In addition, 8.01% of average bit-rate has been decreased while the same PSNR in R-D curves is kept.
Purpose: The aim of this retrospective study was to investigate the use of a radiopaque tissue fiducial marker (TFM) in the treatment of prostate cancer patients who undergo post-prostatectomy radiotherapy (PPRT). TFM safety, its role and benefit in quantifying the set-up uncertainties in patients undergoing PPRT image-guided radiotherapy were assessed. Materials and Methods: A total of 45 consecutive PPRT patients underwent transperineal implantation of TFM at the level of vesicourethral anastomosis in the retrovesical tissue prior to intensity-modulated radiotherapy. Prostate bed motion was calculated by measuring the position of the TFM relative to the pelvic bony anatomy on daily cone-beam computed tomography. The stability and visibility of the TFM were assessed in the initial 10 patients. Results: No postoperative complications were recorded. A total of 3,500 images were analysed. The calculated prostate bed motion for bony landmark matching relative to TFM were 2.25 mm in the left-right, 5.89 mm in the superior-inferior, and 6.59 mm in the anterior-posterior directions. A significant 36% reduction in the mean volume of rectum receiving 70 Gy (rV70) was achieved for a uniform planning target volume (PTV) margin of 7 mm compared with the Australian and New Zealand Faculty of Radiation Oncology Genito-Urinary Group recommended PTV margin of 10 mm. Conclusion: The use of TFM was safe and can potentially eliminate set-up errors associated with bony landmark matching, thereby allowing for tighter PTV margins and a consequent favourable reduction in dose delivered to the bladder and rectum, with potential improvements in toxicities.

For the large deformation of shear walls under vertical and horizontal loads, there are difficulties in obtaining accurate simulation results using the response analysis method, even with fine mesh elements. Furthermore, concrete material nonlinearity, stiffness degradation, concrete cracking and crushing, and steel bar damage may occur during the large deformation of reinforced concrete (RC) shear walls. Matrix operations that are involved in nonlinear analysis using the traditional finite-element method (FEM) may also result in flaws, and may thus lead to serious errors. To solve these problems, a planar four-node element was developed based on vector mechanics. Owing to particle-based formulation along the path element, the method does not require repeated constructions of a global stiffness matrix for the nonlinear behavior of the structure. The nonlinear concrete constitutive model and bilinear steel material model are integrated with the developed element, to ensure that large deformation and damage behavior can be addressed. For verification, simulation analyses were performed to obtain experimental results on an RC shear wall subjected to a monotonically increasing lateral load with a constant vertical load. To appropriately evaluate the parameters, investigations were conducted on the loading speed, meshing dimension, and the damping factor, because vector mechanics is based on the equation of motion. The static problem was then verified to obtain a stable solution by employing a balanced equation of motion. Using the parameters obtained, the simulated pushover response, including the bearing capacity, deformation ability, curvature development, and energy dissipation, were found to be in accordance with the experimental observation. This study demonstrated the potential of the developed planar element for simulating the entire process of large deformation and damage behavior in RC shear walls.
In order to obtain high-resolution seafloor images, research on SA (Synthetic Aperture) processing and the development of related underwater systems have been performed in many countries. Recently the SA processing is also recognized as an important technique in Korea and researchers started related basic study. However, most previous studies ignored the Doppler effect by a moving receiver array. In this paper reconstructed SAS (Synthetic Aperture Sonar) images and position errors are analyzed according to the speed of a moving array for understanding its moving effect on the SAS images. In the analysis the spatial frequency domain interpolation algorithm is used. The results show that as the moving speed of the array increases the estimated position error also increases and image distortion gets worse when we do not consider the array motion. However, if the compensated receiver signals considering the array motion are used the position error and image distortion can be eliminated. In conclusion a signal processing scheme which compensates the Doppler effect is necessary especially in the condition where the array speed is over 1 m/s.
Background: The Microsoft Kinect which is a low-cost gaming device has been studied as a promise clinical gait analysis tool having satisfactory reliability and validity. However, its accuracy is only guaranteed when it is properly positioned in front of a subject. Objects: The purpose of this study was to identify the error when the Kinect was positioned at a $45^{\circ}$ angle to the longitudinal walking plane compare with those when the Kinect was positioned in front of a subject. Methods: Sixteen healthy adults performed two testing sessions consisting of walking toward and $45^{\circ}$ obliquely the Kinect. Spatiotemporal outcome measures related to stride length, stride time, step length, step time and walking speed were examined. To assess the error between Kinect and 3D motion analysis systems, mean absolute errors (MAE) were determined and compared. Results: MAE of stride length, stride time, step time and walking speed when the Kinect set in front of subjects were investigated as .36, .04, .20 and .32 respectively. MAE of those when the Kinect placed obliquely were investigated as .67, .09, .37, and .58 respectively. There were significant differences in spatiotemporal outcomes between the two conditions. Conclusion: Based on our study experience, positioning the Kinect directly in front of the person walking towards it provides the optimal spatiotemporal data. Therefore, we concluded that the Kinect should be placed carefully and adequately in clinical settings.

We developed smartphone application and web application server to acquire and effectively manage tree measurement information. Smartphone applications can measure tree height, diameter at breast height (DBH), azimuth, altitude, slope, and positional coordinates using augmented reality (Google AR core) and motion sensors. The web application server effectively manages and stores measurement information. To evaluate the accuracy of information acquired using a smartphone, 90 Korean pine trees (Pinus koraiensis) were randomly selected from a natural mixed forest, with a total of 90 representative trees randomly collected from a natural mixed forest. Then, height and DBH were measured using a Haglof Vertex Laser Hypsometer and caliper. Comparisons of the results indicated significant results at the 95% level and a very high average correlation of 0.972 for both tree height and DBH. In terms of DBH, the average errors were 0.6745 cm and 1.0139 cm for artificial coniferous and natural mixed forests, respectively.
