The Jacobian matrix of the equations of motion of a system using velocity transformation technique is derived via variation methods to apply the implicit integration algorithm, DASSL. The concept of generalized coordinate partitioning is used to parameterize the constraint set with independent generalized coordinates. DASSL is applied to determine independent generalized coordinates and velocities. Dependent generalized coordinates, velocities, accelerations and Lagrange multipliers are explicitly retained in the formulation to satisfy all of the governing kinematic and dynamic equations. The derived Jacobian matrix of a system is proved to be valid and accurate both analytically and through solution of numerical examples.

Dynamic stability of an axially oscillating cantilever beam is investigated in this paper. The equations of motion are derived and transformed into non-dimensional ones. The equations include harmonically oscillating parameters which originate from the motion-induced stiffness variation. Using the equations, the multiple scale perturbation method is employed to obtain a stability diagram. The stability diagram shows that relatively large unstable regions exist around the frequencies of the first bending natural frequency, twice the first bending natural frequency, and twice the second bending natural frequency. The validity of the diagram is proved by direct numerical simulations of the dynamic system.

This paper is concerned with the dynamic modeling and controller design for a cylindrical shell equipped with MFC actuators. The dynamic model was derived by using Rayleigh-Ritz method based on Donnel-Mushtari shell theory. The actuator and sensors for the MFC actuator equations were derived based on pin-force model. The boundary conditions at both ends were assumed to be shear diaphragm. After calculating the natural vibration characteristics, the positive position feedback controller was designed to cope with the first two modes. To this end, the equations of motion were reduced to modal equations of motion by considering the modes of interest. The theoretical results show that vibrations can be successfully suppressed.

This paper presents a systematic formulation for the kinematic and dynamic analysis of flexible multibody systems. The system equations of motion are derived in terms of relative and elastic coordinates using velocity transformation technique. The position transformation equations that relate the relative and elastic coordinates to the Cartesian coordinates for the two contiguous flexible bodies are derived. The velocity transformation matrix is derived systematically corresponding to the type of kinematic joints connecting the bodies and system path matrix. This matrix is employed to represent the equations of motion in relative coordinate space. Two examples are taken to test the method developed here.
Equations of motion of rotating cantilever curved beams are derived based on a dynamic modeling method developed in this paper. The Kane's method is employed to derive the equations of motion. Different from the classical linear modeling method which employs two cylindrical deformation variables, the present modeling method employs a non-cylindrical variable along with a cylindrical variable to describe the elastic deformation. The derived equations (governing the stretching and the bending motions) are coupled but linear. So they can be directly used for the vibration analysis. The coupling effect between the stretching and the bending motions which could not be considered in the conventional modeling method is considered in this modeling method. The natural frequencies of the rotating curved beams versus the rotating speed are calculated for various radii of curvature and hub radius ratios.
The study deals with the vibration of a beam whose flexural and centroidal axes are not coincident. The elementary bending-twisting theory is employed to derive the equation of motion, in which the effects of rotary inertia are added to the bending displacements and the effects of warping are added to the twist. Bending translation is restricted to one direction so that one bending equation is used instead of two. The equations of motion are solved by using the boundary value problem. The exact natural frequencies are fund from the frequency equation, which is obtained from the condition that the homogeneous system of algebraic equations representing the spatial solution shall not yield a trivial solution. The orthogonal conditions are established, and the principal mode equations of forced vibration are derived. As an example, the cantilevered beam is chosen and the first some natural frequencies and their modal shapes are found.

The Lyapunov stability theory has been known inadequate to prove capturability of guidance laws because the equations of motion resulted from the guidance laws do not have the equilibrium point. By introducing a proper transformation of the range state, the original equations of motion for a stationary target can be converted into nonlinear equations with a specified equilibrium subspace. Physically, the equilibrium subspace denotes the direction of missile velocity to the target. By using a single Lyapunov function candidate, capturability of several PN laws for a stationary target is then proved for examples. In this approach, there is no assumption of the constant speed missile. The proposed method is expected to provide a unified and simplified scheme to prove the capturability of various kinds of guidance laws.
The Pseudo-Excitation Method (PEM) is applied to study the stochastic space vibration responses of train-bridge coupling system. Each vehicle is modeled as a four-wheel mass-spring-damper system with two layers of suspension system possessing 15 degrees-of- freedom. The bridge is modeled as a spatial beam element, and the track irregularity is assumed to be a uniform random process. The motion equations of the vehicle system are established based on the d'Alembertian principle, and the motion equations of the bridge system are established based on the Hamilton variational principle. Separate iteration is applied in the solution of equations. Comparisons with the Monte Carlo simulations show the effectiveness and satisfactory accuracy of the proposed method. The PSD of the 3-span simply-supported girder bridge responses, vehicle responses and wheel/rail forces are obtained. Based on the $3{\sigma}$ rule for Gaussian stochastic processes, the maximum responses of the coupling system are suggested.
It is found that there are many serious errors in deriving the existing governing equations of motion for a wheel-axle set negotiating an arbitrarily changing radius curve by Vijay K. Garg and Rao V. Dukkipati. Among other things, despite the hypothesis on arbitrarily changing radius of curve, there had been no taking a time derivative of the radius R in the first half of the derivation. Even if the D'lambert force arising from the centrifugal acceleration of vehicle body or bogie was appropriately taken into account while calculating cant deficiency, it is unnecessarily duplicated in the force vectors of governing equations. The graphical model given in Fig. 5.15 is not enough to follow those developed expressions from both physical and structural points of view. Besides, there are some blunders in assigning plus or minus sign not to be regarded as simple typographic ones and similar mistakes are committed in deriving creep force expressions as in the case of a wheel-axle set on a tangent track.
