  • Turbulent flow analysis is conducted around the multi-stage launch vehicle including base region and detachment motion of strap-on boosters due to resultant aerodynamic forces and gravity is simulated. Aerodynamic solution procedure is coupled with rigid body dynamics for the prediction of separation behavior. An overset mesh technique is adopted to achieve maximum efficiency in simulating relative motion of bodies and various turbulence models are implemented on the flow solver to predict the aerodynamic forces accurately. At first, some preliminary studies are conducted to show the importance of base flow for the exact prediction of detachment motion and to find the most suitable turbulence model for the simulation of launch vehicle configurations. And then, developed solver is applied to the simulation of KSR-III, a three-stage sounding rocket researched in Korea. From the analyses, after-body flow field strongly affects the separation motions of strap-on boosters. Negative pitching moment at initial stage is gradually recovered and a strap-on finally results in a safe separation, while fore-body analysis shows collision phenomena between core rocket and booster. And a slight variation of motion is observed from the comparison between inviscid and turbulent analyses. Change of separation trajectory based on viscous effects is just a few percent and therefore, inviscid analysis is sufficient for the simulation of separation motion if the study is focused only on the movement of strap-ons.

  • This paper describes the construction of a half sphere screen driving tilting simulator that can perform six degree-of-freedom (DOF) motions simulator to a tilting train. The mathematical equations of Tilting Train dynamics are first derived from the 6-DOF bicycle model and incorporated with the bogie, carbody, and suspension subsystems. The equations of motion are then programmed by visual C++ code. To achieve the simulator functions, a motion platform that is constructed by six electric-driven actuators is designed, and its kinetics/inverse kinetics analysis is also conducted. Driver operation signals such as carbady angle, accelerator, and tilting positions are measured to trigger the Tilting dynamics calculation and further actuate the cylinders by the motion platform control program. In addition, a digital PID controller is added to achieve the stable and accurate displacements of the motion platform. The experiments prove that the designed simulator is adequate in performing some special rail road driving situations discussed in this paper.

  • This paper treats the DIS (Digital Image Stabilization) problem subject to base motions such as translation, rotation and zoom. For the local motion estimation from a raw image, the Harris corner detection algorithm is exploited to extract feature points, and comparing those of consecutive images, the zoom ratio (scale factor) is computed. For the global motion estimation, an equivalent model is derived to account for a 3-dimensional composite motion from which the center point and Euler angle can be determined. Finally, the motion compensation follows. To show the effectiveness of the present DIS scheme, experimental results for synthetic images are illustrated.

  • Seismic performances of the base isolated model of Five Story Stone Pagoda were studied through shaking table tests. Friction pendulum system (FPS), Pure-friction system with laminated rubber bearing (LRB) and Ball with rubber bearing were selected fur the comparison of performances. Performances of specially designed isolation systems were tested dynamically using shaking table. The test results of isolated model are compared with those of fixed base model. Compared with fixed base model, the isolated model showed that it could withstand much higer intensity of earthquake motion. The Effective Peak Ground Acceleration (EPGA) value of isolated model when the top component tipped over was above twice of that value in case of fixed base model. According to the additional test results, the lower value of coefficient of friction than that of common frictional base isolation systems is more effective to protect the piled multi-block system of Pagoda against moderate intesity of ground motion.

  • Previous major earthquakes revealed that most damage of the buried segmented pipelines occurs at the joints of the pipelines. It has been proven that the differential motions between the pipe segments are one of the primary reasons that results in the damage (Zerva et al. 1986, O'Roueke and Liu 1999). This paper studies the combined influences of ground motion spatial variations and local soil conditions on the seismic responses of buried segmented pipelines. The heterogeneous soil deposits surrounding the pipelines are assumed resting on an elastic half-space (base rock). The spatially varying base rock motions are modelled by the filtered Tajimi-Kanai power spectral density function and an empirical coherency loss function. Local site amplification effect is derived based on the one-dimensional wave propagation theory by assuming the base rock motions consist of out-of-plane SH wave or combined in-plane P and SV waves propagating into the site with an assumed incident angle. The differential axial and lateral displacements between the pipeline segments are stochastically formulated in the frequency domain. The influences of ground motion spatial variations, local soil conditions, wave incident angle and stiffness of the joint are investigated in detail. Numerical results show that ground motion spatial variations and local soil conditions can significantly influence the differential displacements between the pipeline segments.

  • This paper deals with rocking response behavior of rigid block structure subjected to horizontal excitation. A strict consideration of impact and sliding between the block and base is essential to investigate the rocking vibration characteristics because the rocking behavior were greatly influenced by the impact and sliding motion. Therefore, not only restitution coefficient between the block and base but also the energy dissipation rate which is associated with sliding motion, and the static and kinetic friction coefficient between those should be included in the modeling of rocking system. The analytic program was developed to be able to simulate the experimental responses of the block subjected to horizontal sinusoidal excitations. By using this program, rocking responses were numerically calculated by the nonlinear equations for rocking system. From the response simulation and rocking vibration experiment, the following results were obtained. The rocking responses are affected by the impact motion due to energy dissipation and friction and provide very complex behavior. The toppling condition of the block is also influenced by the impact motion and sliding motion.

  • A number of structural and modal parameters are derived from the strong motion records of an instrumented G + 9 storeyed RC building during Bhuj earthquake, 26 Jan. 2001 in India. Some of the extracted parameters are peak floor accelerations, storey drift and modal characteristics. Modal parameters of the building are also compared with the values obtained from ambient vibration survey of the instrumented building after the occurrence of earthquake. These parameters are further used for calibrating the accuracy of fixed-base Finite Element (FE) models considering structural and non-structural elements. Some conclusions are drawn based on theoretical and experimental results obtained from strong motion records and time history analysis of FE models. An important outcome of the study is that strong motion peak acceleration profile in two horizontal directions is close to FE model in which masonry infill walls are modeled.

  • This paper reports results of the structural response of empty steel tanks under vertical ground motions. The tanks are modeled using a finite element discretization using shell elements, and the vertical motion is applied and analyzed using nonlinear dynamics. Several excitation frequencies are considered, with emphasis on those that may lead to resonance of the roof. The computational results illustrate that as the base motion frequency is tuned with the frequency of the first roof-mode of the tank, the system displays large-amplitude displacements. For frequencies away from such mode, small amplitude displacements are obtained. The effect of the height of the cylinder on the dynamic response of the tank to vertical ground motion has also been investigated. The vertical acceleration of the ground motion that induces significant changes in the stiffness of the tank was found to be almost constant regardless of the height of the cylinder.

  • The dynamic behavior of the rectangular liquid storage structure is known to be greatly influenced by fluid-structure interaction. By mounting the liquid storage structure on the properly designed base isolators, dynamic response of the superstructure can be reduced. However, base isolators inevitably incur large displacement of the structure to the ground ·ind may give adverse effects on the sloshing height. This paper presents the analysis method for fluid-structure-isolator interaction in base-isolated rectangular liquid storage structures. In the method, the irrotational motion of invicid and incompressible ideal fluid is expressed by analytic solutions and the superstructure and isolators are properly modeled by finite element and bilinear model. Free surface sloshing motion, hydrodynamic pressure acting on the wall and structural response are obtained by the presented method.
