  • This paper presents the development of a new inchworm actuation system using the shearing deformation of the piezoelectric actuators. In this new actuation system, piezoelectric shearing/expanding actuators, an inertial mass and an advanced preload system are configured innovatively to generate the motion of an inertial mass. There are two modes in the new actuation system: (1) stick mode, and (2) clamp mode. In stick mode, the deformation of the piezoelectric shearing actuators drives an inertial mass by means of the friction force at their contact interface. On the other hand, in clamp mode, the piezoelectric expanding actuators provide the gripping force to an inertial mass and, as a result, eliminate its backward motion following the rapid backward deformation of the piezoelectric shearing actuators. To investigate the feasibility of the proposed new actuation system, the experimental system is built up, and the static performance evaluation and dynamic analysis are conducted. The open-loop performance of the linear motion of the proposed new actuation system is evaluated. In dynamic analysis, the mathematical model for the contact interface is established based on the LuGre friction model and the equivalent parameters are identified.

  • A simulation program for vehicle dynamic analysis was developed. The Cartesisn coordinate system was used for translational motion and the Euler angle system was used for rotational motion. A three dimensional multi-wheeled vehicle model and equations of motion were derived. Also static equilibrium analysis was added for initial vehicle condition setting. The program user can describe the exact characteristics of suspension spring force and damping force in the user subroutine. A wheel-ground contact model which represents geometrical effect was developed. Two cases of simulation for 16 D.O.F. vehicle model were conducted to validate the developed program by comparing the simulation results with the experimental data.

  • In this paper, the mathematical model of a cut with an inverted flexible beam and a concentrated tip mass was derived. The characteristic equation for calculating the natural frequencies of the cart-beam-mass system was obtained and the motion of the system was analyzed through unconstrained modal analysis. A good positioning response of the cart without excessive vibrational motion of the tip mass could be obtained through numerical simulation using PID controller with the feedback of both the position of the cart and the deflection of the beam.

  • The effects of the uniform and spatially varying ground motions on the stochastic response of fluid-structure interaction system during an earthquake are investigated by using the displacement based fluid finite elements in this paper. For this purpose, variable-number-nodes two-dimensional fluid finite elements based on the Lagrangian approach is programmed in FORTRAN language and incorporated into a general-purpose computer program SVEM, which is used for stochastic dynamic analysis of solid systems under spatially varying earthquake ground motion. The spatially varying earthquake ground motion model includes wave-passage, incoherence and site-response effects. The effect of the wave-passage is considered by using various wave velocities. The incoherence effect is examined by considering the Harichandran-Vanmarcke and Luco-Wong coherency models. Homogeneous medium and firm soil types are selected for considering the site-response effect where the foundation supports are constructed. A concrete gravity dam is selected for numerical example. The S16E component recorded at Pacoima dam during the San Fernando Earthquake in 1971 is used as a ground motion. Three different analysis cases are considered for spatially varying ground motion. Displacements, stresses and hydrodynamic pressures occurring on the upstream face of the dam are calculated for each case and compare with those of uniform ground motion. It is concluded that spatially varying earthquake ground motions have important effects on the stochastic response of fluid-structure interaction systems.

  • Complex systems are made of many subsystems, those are developed and manufactured by many part companies. Even though the information for a part is necessary to analyze the performance of the other part, it is not so easy to get the information for that part from other companies due to many reasons like security or compatibilities. If the modal parameters of a system between the connecting points are available, we can reconstruct a reduced model for that system in a physical coordinate not in a generalized coordinate. The assemble of the equations of motion for the main system and the reduced equations of motion for the connected system can give a response of the main system considering the effects of connected systems. The results show that the proposed method can give the response of a system accurately. The rule for the selection of modes is to use the fundamental modes whose natural frequencies are low.

  • In this study, the circular friction massage technique was performed on the trapezius, the levator scapulae, and the deltoid muscles to collect the information on massage pressures and positions, and thus to utilize it in professional massage system design. Massage motion was measured with the 3-D motion capture system and finger pressures were simultaneously obtained with grip sensors. Massage motions, pressure patterns, and pressure times were different on each muscle, and the motion trajectory was similar to the ellipsoidal shape. The trapezius had higher pressure, longer massage time, and larger impulse than other muscles. These results could be useful to design a massage system based on biomechanical analysis. In order to improve massage effect, it is also strongly recommended that the tip of the system be similar with that of a human thumb in shape and material.

  • In this paper, the generalized hydrodynamic force and response of a flexible body are calculated at different reference coordinate systems. We generalize the equation of motion for a flexible body by using the conservation of momentum (Mei et al., 2005). To obtain the equations in the generalized mode, two different reference coordinates are adopted. The first is the body-fixed coordinate system by a rigid body motion. The other is the inertial coordinate system which has been adopted for the analysis. Using the perturbation scheme in the weakly-nonlinear assumption, the equations of motion are expanded up to second-order quantities and several second-order forces are obtained. Numerical tests are conducted for the flexible barge model in head waves and the vertical bending is only considered in the hydroelastic responses. The results show that the linear response does not have the difference between the two formulations. On the other hand, second-order quantities have different values for which the rigid body motion is relatively large. However, the total summation of second-order quantities has not shown a large difference at each reference coordinate system.

  • A rotordynamic system consists of components that undergo rotational motion. These components include shafts, impellers, thrust collars, and components that support rotation, such as bearings and seals. The motion of this type of rotating system can be modeled as two-dimensional motion and, accordingly, the equation of motion for the rotordynamic system can be represented using complex coordinates. The directional frequency response function (dFRF) can be derived from this complex coordinate system and used as an effective analytical tool for rotating machinery. However, the dFRF is not widely used in the field because most previous studies and commercial software are based on real coordinate systems. The objective of the current study is to introduce the dFRF and show that it can be an effective tool in rotordynamic analysis. In this study, the normal frequency response function (nFRF) and dFRF are compared under rotordynamic analysis for isotropic and unisotropic rotors. Results show that in the nFRF, the magnitude of the response is the same for both positive and negative frequencies, and the response is similar under all modes. Consequently, the severity of the mode cannot be identified. However, in the dFRF, the forward and backward modes are clearly distinguishable in the frequency domain of the isotropic rotor, and the severity of the mode can be identified for the unisotropic rotor.

  • The aim of this paper concerns with the nonlinear analysis of cable-stayed bridges including the vibration effect of cable stays. Two models for the cable stay system are built up in the study. One is the OECS (one element cable system) model in which one single element per cable stay is used and the other is MECS (multi-elements cable system) model, where multi-elements per cable stay are used. A finite element computation procedure has been set up for the nonlinear analysis of such kind of structures. For shape finding of the cable-stayed bridge with MECS model, an efficient computation procedure is presented by using the two-loop iteration method (equilibrium iteration and shape iteration) with help of the catenary function method to discretize each single cable stay. After the convergent initial shape of the bridge is found, further analysis can then be performed. The structural behaviors of cable-stayed bridges influenced by the cable lateral motion will be examined here detailedly, such as the static deflection, the natural frequencies and modes, and the dynamic responses induced by seismic loading. The results show that the MECS model offers the real shape of cable stays in the initial shape, and all the natural frequencies and modes of the bridge including global modes and local modes. The global mode of the bridge consists of coupled girder, tower and cable stays motion and is a coupled mode, while the local mode exhibits only the motion of cable stays and is uncoupled with girder and tower. The OECS model can only offers global mode of tower and girder without any motion of cable stays, because each cable stay is represented by a single straight cable (or truss) element. In the nonlinear seismic analysis, only the MECS model can offer the lateral displacement response of cable stays and the axial force variation in cable stays. The responses of towers and girders of the bridge determined by both OECS- and MECS-models have no great difference.
