  • This paper presents a method to retarget a source motion to the rig-space parameter for a target character that can be equipped with a complex rig structure as used in traditional animation pipelines. Our solution allows the animators to edit the retargeted motion easily and intuitively as they can work with the same rig parameters that have been used for keyframe animation. To acheive this, we analyze the correspondence between the source motion space and the target rig-space, followed by performing non-linear optimization for the motion retargeting to target rig-space. We observed the general workflow practiced by animators and apply this process to the optimization step.

  • In this study, the method to generate facial animation of SVG format based online character AUtomatically was proposed. The re-targeted character can reproduce the modeling facial movements itself without losing the unique formative properties by modeling abundant facial movements of the character in the existing animation for movie theater through the mathematical calculation and 'retargeting' this to other character of SVG format. The method of retargeting facial movements like this can be applied to the various characters by only one facial data so although non-specialists, even not an animator can create facial animation of character easily and rapidly. The suggested facial movement in this study is nonlinear and an exaggerated motion so it is friendly to the viewers and it is lively. Besides, it is based on the SVG format, so the smooth facial movements can be implemented by less capacity than existing GIF animation.

  • With the rapid development of 3D animation, MetaHuman is widely used in film production, game development and VR production as a virtual human creation platform. In the animation production of virtual humans, motion capture is usually used.Since different motion capture solutions use different skeletons for motion recording, when the skeleton level of recorded animation data is different from that of MetaHuman, the animation data recorded by motion capture cannot be directly used on MetaHuman. This requires Reorient the skeletons of both. This study explores an efficient skeleton reorientation method that can maintain the accuracy of animation data by reducing the number of bone chains. In the experiment, three skeleton structures, Rokoko, Mixamo and Xsens were used for efficient redirection experiments, to compare and analyze the adaptability of different skeleton structures to the MetaHuman skeleton, and to explore which skeleton structure has the highest compatibility with the MetaHuman skeleton. This research provides an efficient skeleton reorientation idea for the production team of 3D animated video content, which can significantly reduce time costs and improve work efficiency.

  • In this paper, we introduce a technique to retarget human motion data to the humanoid body in a constrained environment. We assume that the given motion data includes detailed interactions such as holding the object by hand or avoiding obstacles. In addition, we assume that the humanoid joint structure is different from the human joint structure, and the shape of the surrounding environment is different from that at the time of the original motion. Under such a condition, it is also difficult to preserve the context of the interaction shown in the original motion data, if the retargeting technique that considers only the change of the body shape. Our approach is to separate the problem into two smaller problems and solve them independently. One is to retarget motion data to a new skeleton, and the other is to preserve the context of interactions. We first retarget the given human motion data to the target humanoid body ignoring the interaction with the environment. Then, we precisely deform the shape of the environmental model to match with the humanoid motion so that the original interaction is reproduced. Finally, we set spatial constraints between the humanoid body and the environmental model, and restore the environmental model to the original shape. To demonstrate the usefulness of our method, we conducted an experiment by using the Boston Dynamic's Atlas robot. We expected that out method can help the humanoid motion tracking problem in the future.

  • This paper deals with a method for creating animation by interaction with animation operators. Operators are able to edit/transform any given motion data to more natural animations by the motion editing method proposed in this paper. The proposed technique is especially useful when some paris of character structure are changed. The system to be proposed is designed to fully utilize the experience of animation operators as well as to accomodate semi-automation process with spline interpolation. An example for retargeting a given motion data to a new character of dramatically changed kinematic structure.

  • We propose several techniques which can be employed in a 3D fitness program for monitoring and correcting user's posture. To implement a 3D fitness program, improved reference motion generating techniques and visualizing techniques are necessary. First, in order to understand the difference between the user and the reference movement of a professional, a retargeting method between two different body shapes are studied. Second, the problem of self-occlusion, which occurs when using a low-cost depth sensor to represent complex motions, is solved by using a sample database and time consistency. The system proposed in this paper evaluates the user's posture considering the physical characteristics of the user, and then provides feedback to the user.

  • This paper presents a motion generation technique for arbitrary morphologies with the user defined correspondences between joints. Users can define the controlling part in the source character and the part to be controlled in the target character in our system. To remove the restriction in the morphology of the target character, we use the pair of example posture sets. In our system, in order to provide the correspondence regardless of the number of joints, the deformed part in the target character is simplified into the direction vector. The final postures are then generated with the weighted sum of the examples. Our experimental results demonstrate that our approach can generate motions for various target characters and can control the user defined joints in real-time.

  • Motion capture means the recording of movement of objects such as human beings, animals, creatures, machines, etc in a form applicable to computer. Since the motion capture system can be introduced to the fields where realistic movement of human beings and animals, which cannot be attained with an existing key frame method is required, large scale is necessary or economical burden exists, it has a merit and possibility of new expression. For these reasons, this method is increasingly used in the field of digital entertainment such as movie, TV, advertisement, documentary, music video, etc centering around the game. However, in spite of such an advantage, problems such as too much advance preparation work in digital image expressions using motion capture, marker attachment, compensation of motion data, motion retargeting and lack of professional human resources, etc. are becoming a prominent figure. Accordingly, this study intends to suggest the way of more effective production of motion capture digital image through finding the problems and their draft possible solutions in the production process based on the image production examples using motion capture.

  • This paper proposes a method to directly retarget facial motion capture data to the facial rig. Facial rig is an essential tool in the production pipeline, which allows helping the artist to create facial animation. The direct mapping method from the motion capture data to the facial rig provides great convenience because artists are already familiar with the use of a facial rig and the direct mapping produces the mapping results that are ready for the artist's follow-up editing process. However, mapping the motion data into a facial rig is not a trivial task because a facial rig typically has a variety of structures, and therefore it is hard to devise a generalized mapping method for various facial rigs. In this paper, we propose a data-driven approach to the robust mapping from motion capture data to an arbitary facial rig. The results show that our method is intuitive and leads to increased productivity in the creation of facial animation. We also show that our method can retarget the expression successfully to non-human characters which have a very different shape of face from that of human.
