  • The purpose of this study to compare the effect of physical therapy interventions on the improvement of ankle joint range of motion with stroke patients. Total subjects were 45 stroke patients, who were divided into a group using inclined boards(n=15), a group of receiving stretching(n=15), and a group of receiving joint mobilization(n=15). The experiment was performed for 8 weeks. The plantar flexion showed significant differences both groups and by periods. The dorsiflexion showed significant differences between groups and by periods, and the group in changes within groups by periods. This study found that stretching and joint mobilization are effective as an intervention method to increase the range of motion on ankle joint. Future study is expected to investigate other effects of increased ankle range of motion in stroke patients.

  • PURPOSE: This study compared the changes in the range of motion (ROM ) on the knee joint according to three different isometric contraction intensities when applying Evjenth - Hamberg stretching (EHS) to the hamstring muscles of healthy subjects. METHODS: Forty eight healthy subjects aged between 20 and 39 years were allocated randomly to four groups; performing EHS at 10% maximum voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) group, EHS at 50% MVIC group, EHS at 100% MVIC group, and control group (CG) pre-, and post-intervention. The flexibility of the hamstring muscles was evaluated using a digital goniometer for measuring the knee joint ROM motion. A Chattanooga stabilizer was used to adjust the MVIC intensity by 10%, 50%, and 100%, respectively. RESULTS: These results show that the pre- and post-intervention knee joint ROM were significantly different in all four groups (p<.05). The post-intervention knee joint ROM showed a significant difference between the 100% MVIC group and non-MVIC group (p<.05). The knee joint ROM difference between the pre- and post-interventions was similar in the 10% MVIC and 50% MVIC groups but significant differences were observed among the other groups (p<.05). CONCLUSION: EHS of the hamstring muscles was effective in improving the knee joint ROM with an isometric contraction intensity of 10%, 50%, or 100% MVIC, and of these, 100% MVIC was most effective.

  • PURPOSE. This study investigated the accuracy of full-arch intraoral scans obtained by various scan strategies with the segmental scan and merge methods. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Seventy intraoral scans (seven scans per group) were performed using 10 scan strategies that differed in the segmental scan (1, 2, or 3 segments) and the scanning motion (straight, zigzag, or combined). The three-dimensional (3D) geometric accuracy of scan images was evaluated by comparison with a reference image in an image analysis software program, in terms of the arch shape discrepancies. Measurement parameters were the intermolar distance, interpremolar distance, anteroposterior distance, and global surface deviation. One-way analysis of variance and Tukey honestly significance difference post hoc tests were carried out to compare differences among the scan strategy groups (α = .05). RESULTS. The linear discrepancy values of intraoral scans were not different among scan strategies performed with the single scan and segmental scan methods. In general, differences in the scan motion did not show different accuracies, except for the intermolar distance measured under the scan conditions of a 3-segmental scan and zigzag motion. The global surface deviations were not different among all scan strategies. CONCLUSION. The segmental scan and merge methods using two scan parts appear to be reliable as an alternative to the single scan method for full-arch intraoral scans. When three segmental scans are involved, the accuracy of complete arch scan can be negatively affected.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to apply suboccipital muscle inhibition combined with neck muscle stabilization exercise to 20~30s IT industry employees who suffer from chronic non-specific neck pain. Methods: This study was designed as single-blind and randomized controlled trial. The study participants were 20~30s IT industry employees with chonic non-specific neck pain (VAS 3/10) who were divided into an experimental group (n= 20) subjected to suboccipital muscle inhibition with neck muscle stabilization exercise, and control group (n= 20); suboccipital muscle inhibition only. The intervention was applied three times per week for eight weeks. The neck pain·pressure pain threshold·range of motion, and disability index were measured at the 1st, 8th, and 10th week at follow up, then analyzed with an analysis of variance(ANOVA) using the SPSS program. Results: The total number of study participants was 37 (experimental group 19, mean age 34.6±5.3, control group 18, mean age 35.7±4.9). The comparison and analysis of change in VAS, the pressure pain threshold, and the range of motion except the extension (p>.05) revealed a statistically significant decrease between groups over eight weeks and follow up measurement (p<.01). Regarding the within the group differences, the right side of the neck pressure pain threshold showed a statistically significant decrease over eight weeks in the control group (p<.01). The right and left lateral flexion, and the right and left rotation were statistically significant for the experimental group over eight weeks and follow up measurement, but only the left lateral flexion (p<.05) for the control group over eight weeks. The neck disability index showed a slight decrease but this was not satistically significant for the between-grop or the within-group differences (p>.05). Conclusion: The intervention of suboccipital muscle inhibition and a neck muscle stabilization exercise are more beneficial for neck pain and the range of motion than the application of suboccipital muscle inhibition alone.

  • The granular flow has been numerically studied by using DEM(Discrete Element Method). The eve교 particle is checked if it collides neighbor particles, and the next motion of the particle is predicted. The computing time has been drastically reduced by improving the collision check against neighboring particles. The comparison of the present method with ail experiment for the vibrating floor problem shows the good accuracy. The broken tower problem has been calculated to show the good comparison with the other computational result. This DEM(Discrete Element Method) can be a useful tool for constructing the constitute equation of the continuum approach of the granular flow.

  • The actual power performance of historical structural change tests are compared under various alternatives. The tests of interest are F, CUSUM, MOSUM, Moving Estimates and empirical distribution function tests with both recursive and ordinary least-squares residuals. Our comparison of the structural tests involves limiting distributions under the hypothesis, the ability to detect the alternative hypotheses under one or double structural change, and smooth change in parameters. Even though no version is uniformly superior to the other, the knowledge about the properties of those tests and connections between these tests can be used in practical structural change tests and in further research on other change tests.

  • Interface tracking of two phase is significant to analyze multi-phase phenomena. The VOF(Volume of Fluid) and level set are well known interface tracking method. However, they have limitations to solve compressible flow and incompressible flow at the same time. CIP(Cubic Interpolate Propagation) method is appropriate for considering compressible and incompressible flow at once by solving the governing equation which is divided up into advection and non-advection term. In this article, we analyze the droplet impingement according to various We number using improved CIP method which treats nonlinear term once more comparison with original CIP method. Furthermore, we compare spread radius after droplet impingement on the wall with the experimental data and original CIP original CIP method, and it reduces the mass conservation error which is generated in the numerical analysis comparison with original CIP method.

  • Many investigations have been conducted to find out the reason behind wind-rain-induced cable vibration in cable-stayed bridges. A single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) analytical model, which could capture main features of wind-rain-induced cable vibration, was recently presented by the writers. This paper extends the SDOF model to a 2DOF model by including the equation of motion of upper rivulet. The interaction between the upper rivulet and the cable is described in terms of nonlinear damping force, linear restoring force, and inertia force. The computed results using the 2DOF model are first compared with the results from simulated wind-rain tunnel tests, and the comparison is found satisfactory in general. The possible mechanisms of wind-rain-induced cable vibration are discussed and a parametric study is then conducted. Finally, the computed results using the 2DOF model are compared with those predicted by the SDOF model. The 2DOF model is found better than the SDOF model but the SDOF model is still acceptable for its simplicity.

  • Recently, Broadband ISDN(B-ISDN) has received increased attention as a communication architecture which can support multimedia applications. Also, Asynchronous Transfer Mode(ATM) is considered as a promising technique to transfer and switch various kinds of media, such as telephone speech, data and motion video. Comparisons among a variety of ATM switching systems which have already been proposed will provide quite useful information for the new ATM switching system design. To facilitate the comparison, we introduce the design requirements and classification criteria for the ATM switch, and propose a performance analysis model for the Banyan network which is the basic switching fabric of most multi-stage ATM switching systems. The model is based on the standard discrete-time Markov chain analysis and can be conveniently used for extensive Banyan network analysis. The computational results are also presented.

  • A three-dimensional finite element model of a ligamentous two motion segments (L4-S1) was developed to investigate its dynamic response. A number of parameters like the intradiscal pressure, forces in ligaments. and across facet joints in response to a sinusoidal axial compression force (-360 N to -440 N at 5 Hz) were predicted. The increase in the parameters varied from 12% to as high as 50% in comparison to response for a static load of 400 N. The predicted parameters also revealed a distortion and a phase shift in comparison to the applied sinusoidal signal. These changes may lead to degenerative changes seen clinically in persons exposed to a chronic vibration environment over time.
