Deblocking Filter (DF) is newly introduced into H.264/AVC to remove blocky artifacts. It improves the picture quality and the improved picture is set to the frame buffer for motion compensation. As a result, higher coding efficiency is achieved by DF. However, if the original image has heavily-slanted patterns, DF removes the edges to be kept because it is applied only perpendicularly to the block boundaries. In this paper, we propose Edge Adaptive Deblocking Filter (EADF) which is applied not only for the perpendicular but also for several slanted directions to deal with the problem. Simulation results showed us that EADF was especially effective for the sequence "Foreman" with PSNR gain of 0.04 dB.

In ubiquitous computing environment the biological signal ECG (Electrocardiogram signal) is usually recorded with noise components. Adaptive interference (or noise) canceller do adaptive filtering of the noise reference input to maximally match and subtract out noise or interference from the primary (signal plus noise) input thereby adaptively eliminate unwanted interference from the ECG signal. Measured Stress ECG (or exercise ECG signal) signal have three major noisy component like baseline wander noise, motion artifact noise and EMG (Electro-mayo-cardiogram) noise. These noises are not only distorted signal but also root of incorrect diagnosis while ECG data are analyzed. Motion artifact and EMG noises behave like wide band spectrum signals, and they considerably do overlapping with the ECG spectrum. Here the multidimensional adaptive method used for filtering which is more effective to improve signal to noise ratio.

A novel heart rate estimation algorithm is presented based on normalized least-mean-square (NLMS) algorithm. This paper presented a three-step processing scheme for estimating heart rate from PPG signal with motion artifacts. The proposed active noise cancellation algorithm has low computational complexity compared to the NLMS algorithm. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithms perform similar with the previous algorithm under motion artifact noises.

A simulation system is developed to calculate the apparent motion-induced image from a sequence of temporal luminance transitions, while using the properties of the human visual system. Based on the simulation method, both edge (moving block) and detail degradation (line spreading, grating, sinusoidal pattern), and also color aberration are discussed.

In clinical practice, CT Angiography is a powerful technique for the visualziation of blood flow in arterial vessels throughout the body. However CT Angiography images of blood vessels anywhere in the body may be fuzzy if the patient moves during the exam. In this paper, we propose a novel technique for removing global motion artifacts in the 3D space. The proposed methods are based on the two key ideas as follows. First, the method involves the extraction of a set of feature points by using a 3D edge detection technique based on image gradient of the mask volume where enhanced vessels cannot be expected to appear, Second, the corresponding set of feature points in the contrast volume are determined by correlation-based registration. The proposed method has been successfully applied to pre- and post-contrast CTA brain dataset. Since the registration for motion correction estimates correlation between feature points extracted from skull area in mask and contrast volume, it offers an accelerated technique to accurately visualize blood vessels of the brain.

In order to reduce blocking artifacts in inter-frame coded images, we propose a new image restoration algorithm, which directly processes differential images before reconstruction. We note that blocking artifact in inter-frame coded images is caused by both 8$\times$8 DCT and 16$\times$16 macroblock based motion compensation, while that of intra-coded images is caused by 8$\times$8 DCT only. According to the observation, we Propose a new degradation model for differential images and the corresponding restoration algorithm that utilizes additional constraints and convex sets for discontinuity inside blocks. The proposed restoration algorithm is a modified version of standard regularization that incorporate!; spatially adaptive lowpass filtering with consideration of edge directions by utilizing a part of DCT coefficients. Most of video coding standard adopt a hybrid structure of block-based motion compensation and block discrete cosine transform (BDCT). By this reason, blocking artifacts are occurred on both block boundary and block interior For more complete removal of both kinds of blocking artifacts, the restored differential image must satisfy two constraints, such as, directional discontinuities on block boundary and block interior Those constraints have been used for defining convex sets for restoring differential images.
Purpose: Image artifacts caused by patient motion cause problems in cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) because they lead to distortion of the 3-dimensional reconstruction. This prospective study was performed to quantify patient movement during CBCT acquisition and its influence on image quality. Materials and Methods: In total, 412 patients receiving CBCT imaging were equipped with a wireless head sensor system that detected inertial, gyroscopic, and magnetometric movements with 6 dimensions of freedom. The type and amplitude of movements during CBCT acquisition were evaluated and image quality was rated in 7 different anatomical regions of interest. For continuous variables, significance was calculated using the Student t-test. A linear regression model was applied to identify associations of the type and extent of motion with image quality scores. Kappa statistics were used to assess intra- and inter-rater agreement. Chi-square testing was used to analyze the impact of age and sex on head movement. Results: All CBCT images were acquired in a 10-month period. In 24% of the investigations, movement was recorded (acceleration: >0.10 [m/s2]; angular velocity: >0.018 [°/s]). In all examined regions of interest, head motion during CBCT acquisition resulted in significant impairment of image quality (P<0.001). Movement in the horizontal and vertical axes was most relevant for image quality (R2>0.7). Conclusion: Relevant head motions during CBCT imaging were frequently detected, leading to image quality loss and potentially impairing diagnosis and therapy planning. The presented data illustrate the need for digital correction algorithms and hardware to minimize motion artefacts in CBCT imaging.
Motion artifacts of central and autonomic nervous system signals degrades the performance of the bio-signal based human factor analysis. Firstly, we propose a defining method of motion artifact section by analyzing successive image frames. Motion artifact section is defined when the amount of motion is greater than the pre-defined threshold. In here, the amount of motion is estimated by first derivation of image frames at temporal domain. Secondly, we propose another defining method of motion artifact section through designing 2D Gaussian probability density function model by analyzing feature vectors of one cycle of signal such as length and amplitude. The defined motion artifact sections are interpolated on the basis of 1D Gaussian function. At result of applying the method into photoplethysmography signal, we confirmed that the calculated heartbeat rate from the restored photoplethysmography came up to the one from electrocardiography. Also, we found that the video based method generated relatively more false acceptance of motion artifact section and the probability density function based method generated relatively more false rejection of motion artifact section.

Respiration signal of the vital signs is an important parameter in clinical parts. To extract the respiration signal from PPG signal for mobile healthcare system is difficult because the bands of the motion artifacts and respiration in the frequency domain are overlapped. This study to improve this problem suggested a respiration extraction method using the independent component analysis and evaluated its performances. In results of evaluation, the ICA method showed better performance than LPF suggested recently.
