Biodegradable polymeric blends are expected to be widely used by industry due to their environmental friendliness and comparable mechanical and thermal properties. Poly (lactic acid) (PLA) and poly (butylene succinate) (PBS) are such biodegradable polymers which aim to replace commodity polymers in future applications. Since cost and brittleness of PLA is quite high, it is not economically feasible to use it alone for day to day use as a packaging material without blending. In this study, blends of PLA and PBS with various compositions were prepared by using a laboratory-scale twin-screw extruder at $180^{\circ}C$. Morphological, thermal, rheological and mechanical properties were investigated on the samples obtained by compression molding to explore suitability of these compositions for packaging applications. Morphology of the blends was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Morphology showed a clear phase difference trend depending on blend composition. Modulated differential scanning calorimetry (MDSC) thermograms of the blends indicated that the glass transition temperature ($T_g$) of PLA did not change much with the addition of PBS, but analysis showed that for PLA/PBS blend of up to 80/20 composition there is partial miscibility between the two polymers. The tensile strength and modulus were measured by the Instron Universal Testing Machine. Tensile strength, modulus and percentage (%) elongation at break of the blends decreased with PBS content. However, tensile strength and modulus values of PLA/PBS blend for up to 80/20 composition nearly follow the mixing rule. Rheological results also show miscibility between the two polymers for PBS composition less than 20% by weight. PBS reduced the brittleness of PLA, thus making it a contender to replace plastics for packaging applications. This work found a partial miscibility between PBS and PLA by investigating thermal, mechanical and morphological properties.

The relationships between morphological structures and residual stress behaviors of polyimide thin films depending on isomeric diamines were investigated. For this study, Poly(phenylene biphenyltetracarboximide) (BPDA-PDA) and poly(oxydiphenylene biphenyltetracarboximide) (BPDA-ODA) films were prepared from their isomeric diamines: 1,3-phenylene diamine (1,3-PDA) 1,4-phenylene diamine (1.4-PDA), 3,4'-oxydiphenylene diamine (3,4'-ODA), and 4,4'-oxydiphenylene diamine (4,4'-ODA), respectively. For those films, residual stresses were detected in-situ during thermal imidization of the isomeric polyimide as a function of processing temperature over the range of 25~$400^{\circ}C$ using. Thin Film Stress Analyzer (TFSA). In comparison, residual stress of BPDA-1.4PDA having better in-plain orientation and chain order was the lowest value of 7MPa whereas those of BPDA-1,3-PDA, BPDA-3,4'-ODA, and BPDA-4,4'-ODA were in the range of 40-50MPa. Conclusively, the effect of morphological nature (chain rigidity, chain order, orientation) and chain mobility relating to the g1ass transition behavior on the residual stress of isomeric polyimide thin films wart analyzed.
Recently, due to high theoretical capacitance and excellent ion diffusion rate caused by the 2D layered crystal structure, transition metal hydroxides (TMHs) have generated considerable attention as active materials in supercapacitors (or electrochemical capacitors). However, TMHs should be designed using morphological or structural modification if they are to be used as active materials in supercapacitors, because they have insulation properties that induce low charge transfer rate. This study aims to modify the morphological structure for high cycling stability and fast charge storage kinetics of TMHs through the use of nickel cobalt hydroxide [NiCo(OH)2] decorated on nickel foam. Among the samples used, needle-like NiCo(OH)2 decorated on nickel foam offers a high specific capacitance (1110.9 F/g at current density of 0.5 A/g) with good rate capability (1110.9 - 746.7 F/g at current densities of 0.5 - 10.0 A/g). Moreover, at a high current density (10.0 A/g), a remarkable capacitance (713.8 F/g) and capacitance retention of 95.6% after 5000 cycles are noted. These results are attributed to high charge storage sites of needle-like NiCo(OH)2 and uniformly grown NiCo(OH)2 on nickel foam surface.

The effects of the growth temperature on the structural, optical, and morphological properties of BaWO4:Sm3+ phosphor thin films were investigated. The BaWO4:Sm3+ thin films were grown on quartz substrates at several growth temperatures by radio-frequency magnetron sputtering. All the thin films crystallized in a tetragonal structure with a main BaWO4 (112) diffraction peak. The 830 nm-thick BaWO4:Sm3+ thin films grown at 300 ℃ exhibited numerous polygon-shaped particles. The excitation spectra of BaWO4:Sm3+ thin films consisted of a broad excitation band in the 200-270 nm with a maximum at 236 nm due to the O2--Sm3+ charge transfer and two small bands peaked at 402 and 463 nm, respectively. Under 236 nm excitation, the BaWO4:Sm3+ thin films showed an intense red emission peak at 641 nm due to the 4G5/2→6H9/2 transition of Sm3+, indicating that the Sm3+ ions occupied sites of non-inversion symmetry in the BaWO4 host lattice. The highest emission intensity was observed for the thin film grown at 300 ℃, with a 51.8% transmittance and 5.09 eV bandgap. The average optical transmittance in the wavelength range of 500-1100 nm was increased from 53.2% at 200 ℃ to 60.8% after growing at 400 ℃. These results suggest that 300 ℃ is the optimum temperature for growing redemitting BaWO4:Sm3+ thin films.
$SrSnO_3$ phosphor powders were synthesized with two different contents of activator ions $Eu^{3+}$ and $Tb^{3+}$ using the solid-state reaction method. The structural, morphological, and optical properties of the phosphors were investigated using X-ray diffractometry, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, and fluorescence spectrophotometry, respectively. All the phosphors showed a cubic structure, irrespective of the type and the content ratio of activator ions. For $Eu^{3+}$-doped $SrSnO_3$ phosphors, the intensity of the 620 nm red emission spectrum resulting from the $^5D_0{\rightarrow}^7F_2$ transition of $Eu^{3+}$ was stronger than that of the 595 nm orange emission signal due to the $^5D_0{\rightarrow}^7F_1$ transition in the range 0.01-0.05 mol of $Eu^{3+}$, but the ratio of the intensity was reversed in the range 0.10-0.20 mol of $Eu^{3+}$. The variation in the emission intensity indicates that the site symmetry of the $Eu^{3+}$ ions around the host crystal was changed from non-inversion symmetry to inversion. For the $Tb^{3+}$-doped $SrSnO_3$ phosphors under excitation at 281 nm, one strong green emission band at 550 nm and several weak bands were observed. These results suggest that the optimum red and green emission signals can be realized when the activator ion content for $Eu^{3+}$- or $Tb^{3+}$-doped $SrSnO_3$ phosphors is 0.20 mol and 0.15 mol, respectively.
Human Hertwig's epithelial root sheath/epithelial rests of Malassez (HERS/ERM) cells are epithelial remnants of teeth residing in the periodontium. Although the functional roles of HERS/ERM cells have yet to be elucidated, they are a unique epithelial cell population in adult teeth and are reported to have stem cell characteristics. Therefore, HERS/ERM cells might play a role as an epithelial component for the repair or regeneration of dental hard tissues; however, they are very rare population in periodontium and the primary isolation of them is considered to be difficult. To overcome these problems, we immortalized primary HERS/ERM cells isolated from human periodontium using SV40 large T antigen (SV40 LT) and performed a characterization of the immortalized cell line. Primary HERS/ERM cells could not be maintained for more than 6 passages; however, immortalized HERS/ERM cells were maintained for more than 20 passages. There were no differences in the morphological and immunophenotypic characteristics of HERS/ERM cells and immortalized HERS/ERM cells. The expression of epithelial stem cell and embryonic stem cell markers was maintained in immortalized HERS/ERM cells. Moreover, immortalized HERS/ERM cells could acquire mesenchymal phenotypes through the epithelial-mesenchymal transition via TGF-${\beta}1$. In conclusion, we established an immortalized human HERS/ERM cell line with SV40 LT and expect this cell line to contribute to the understanding of the functional roles of HERS/ERM cells and the tissue engineering of teeth.
Five novel spiro[benzo[c]fluorene-7,9'-fluorene] based dyes, including 5-[spiro[benzo[c]fluorene-7,9'-fluoren]-5-yl] spiro[benzo[c]fluorene-7,9'-fluorene] (7), 5-[spiro[benzo[c]fluorene-7,9'-fluoren]-9-yl] spiro[benzo[c]fluorene-7,9'-fluorene] (8), 5-[spiro[benzo[c]fluorene-7,9'-fluoren]-2'-yl] spiro[benzo[c]fluorene-7,9'-fluorene] (9), 9-[spiro[benzo[c]fluorene-7,9'-fluoren]-9-yl] spiro[benzo[c]fluorene-7,9'-fluorene] (10), and 2'-[spiro[benzo[c]-fluorene-7,9'-fluoren]-2'-yl] spiro[benzo[c]fluorene-7,9'-fluorene] (11) were successfully prepared from the corresponding halogen and boronic acid derivatives through the Suzuki coupling reaction, respectively. Chemical structures were confirmed by $^1H$ nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), $^{13}C$ NMR, Fourier transforminfrared spectrscopy, mass spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. The thermal properties were determined by differential scanning calorimetry and thermal gravimetric analysis. The relationships between the optical and electrochemical properties and the combined positions between these dimers were systematically investigated using UV-vis, photoluminescence (PL), and photoelectron spectroscopy. These five dimers exhibited high fluorescent quantum yields and good morphological stability with high glass transition states > $174^{\circ}C$. Dimer 7 showed a UV absorbance peak at 353 nm, emission PL peak at 424 nm, and quantum efficiency of 0.62 in a cyclohexane solution.
Thermal degradation behavior of a $WO_3-TiO_2$ monolithic catalyst was investigated in terms of structural, morphological, and physico-chemical analyses. The catalyst with 4 wt.% $WO_3$ contents were prepared by a wet-impregnation method, and a durability test of the catalysts were performed in a temperature range between $400^{\circ}C$ and $800^{\circ}C$ for 3 h. An increase of thermal stress decreased the specific surface area, which was caused by grain growth and agglomeration of the catalyst particles. The phase transition from anatase to rutile occurred at around $800^{\circ}C$ and a decrease in the Brønsted acid sites was confirmed by structural analysis and physico-chemical analysis. A change in Brønsted acidity can affect to the catalytic efficiency; therefore, the thermal degradation behavior of the $WO_3-TiO_2$ catalyst could be explained by the transition to a stable rutile phase of $TiO_2$ and the decrease of specific surface area in the SCR catalyst.
Morphological characteristics and formation of symmetric polystyrene-block-poly(1,4-butadiene) copolymer (PS-b-PBD) in thin films upon solvent-annealing were investigated by using atomic force microscopy (AFM). The thin films solvent-annealed in cyclohexane revealed the perforated lamellae of poly(1,4-butadiene) in the matrix of polystyrene while those solvent-annealed in n-hexane exhibited highly disordered patterns. Interestingly, when the thin films of PS-b-PBD were solvent-annealed with binary mixtures of cyclohexane and n-hexane, the morphological transition from the perforated lameallae to the perpendicularly-oriented lamellae of poly(1,4-butadiene) could be induced by changing the mixing ratio of both solvents. We also demonstrated that after microdomians of poly(1,4-butadiene) were successfully degraded by UV-$O_3$, linear poly(dimethyl siloxane) chains were back-filled into the etched regions of the thin film and then converted to silica nano-objects by oxygen plasma treatments.
Birnessite (birnessite, $7{\AA}$ manganate, ${\delta}-MnO_2$) is a major mineral comprising manganese nodule. Various synthetic methods have been studied and evaluated because it can be used as an ion exchange agent and a battery recharging material. However, it is difficult to obtain a single birnessite phase because it does not have a stoichiometric chemical composition. Feitknechtite (${\beta}-MnOOH$) is formed as an intermediate product during birnessite synthesis and in this study, the transition of this phase to birnessite was compared by using XRD and SEM. Two different methods, Feng et al. (2004) and Luo et al. (1998), based on redox reaction were used. It was possible to obtain the impurity-free birnessite for the sample aged 60 days at $27^{\circ}C$ by Feng et al. (2004) method and 3 days at $60^{\circ}C$ by Luo et al. (1998) method. The phase transition rate of the feitknechtite phase was slower in the case of $Mg^{2+}$ doped birnessite which was synthesized by Luo et al. (1998) method, and almost single phase almost single phase birnessite was identified at high temperature. Crystal surface and morphology also confirmed the difference between the samples synthesized by two methods.
