Synthesis and Characterization of Sulfonated Poly(arylene ether) Polyimide Multiblock Copolymers for Proton Exchange Membranes

  • Novel multiblock copolymers, based on segmented sulfonated hydrophilic-hydrophobic blocks, were synthesized and investigated for their application as proton exchange membranes. A series of segmented sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone)-b-polyimide multiblock copolymers, with various block lengths, were synthesized via the coupling reaction between the terminal amine moieties on the hydrophilic blocks and naphthalene anhydride functionalized hydrophobic blocks. Successful imidization reactions required a mixed solvent system, comprised of NMP and m-cresol, in the presence of catalysts. Proton conductivity measurements revealed that the proton conductivity improved with increasing hydrophilic and hydrophobic block lengths. The morphological structure of the multiblock copolymers was investigated using tapping mode atomic force microscopy (TM-AFM). The AFM images of the copolymers demonstrated well-defined nanophase separated morphologies, with the changes in the block length having a pronounced effect on the phase separated morphologies of the system. The self diffusion coefficient of water, as measured by $^1H$ NMR, provided a better understanding of the transport process. Thus, the block copolymers showed higher values than Nafion, and comparable proton conductivities in liquid water, as well as under partially hydrated conditions at $80^{\circ}C$. The new materials are strong candidates for use in PEM systems.

복부 근막의 형태학적 정보를 이용한 초음파 영상에서의 복부 근육 추출 및 측정 (Extraction and Measurements of Abdominal Muscles in Ultrasound Images Using Morphological Information of Abdominal Fasia)

  • 본 논문에서는 복부 초음파 영상에서 근육 영역의 명암 대비를 강조하기 위해서 Multiple 연산을 적용한 후, 명암 대비가 강조된 영상에서 수직 방향의 명암도가 200 이상인 픽셀들에 대해 퍼지 기법에 적용하여 이진화한다. 이진화된 영상에서 피부층과 외복사근 사이에 존재하는 피하지방을 추출하기 위해 Thick-Search 방법을 적용하여 피부층과 외복사근을 추출한 후, 피부층과 외복사근의 사이에 Up-Down Search 방법을 적용하여 피하지방층을 추출한다. 피하지방층이 추출된 영상에서 근막의 형태학적 정보를 이용하여 근막을 추출한다. 추출된 근막 사이에 대해 Up-Down Search 방법을 적용하여 근육의 후보 영역을 추출한 후, 근육의 형태학적 정보를 이용하여 최종적인 근육 층을 추출한다. 추출된 근육의 경계선을 Monotone Cubic Hermite 보간법을 이용하여 근육의 경계선을 보정한 후, 최소자승법을 이용하여 근육의 두께를 측정한다. 제안된 방법을 복부 초음파 영상에 적용하여 근막 및 근육 영역을 추출한 결과, 기존의 근육 추출 방법보다 정확하게 추출되었고, 근육의 두께 측정 결과도 전문의가 육안으로 측정한 결과와 근사한 것을 확인할 수 있었다.

금속담지 된 수소제조용 TiO2 나노튜브 전극의 광활성 연구 (Investigation of Photocatalytic Activity with a Metal Doped TiO2 Nanotubular Electrode for Hydrogen Production)

  • The purpose of this study was to correlate between photoelectrochemcial hydrogen production rate and electron transfer with various types of metal doped $TiO_2$ nanotubes as photoanodes. In order to fabricate light sensitized photoanode, CdS, $WO_3$, and Pt were doped by electrodeposition method. As the results of experiments, the electron transfer was favorable from higher position to lower position of conduction band (CB). In consequence, the higher hydrogen production rate was as follows, CdS/$TiO_2$ (100 $umol/hr-cm^2$) > $WO_3/TiO_2$ (20 $umol/hr-cm^2$) > Pt/$TiO_2$ (10 $umol/hr-cm^2$). The surface characterizations exhibited that crystal structure, morphological and electrical properties of various metal depoed $TiO_2$ nanotubes by the results of SEM, TEM, XPS, and photocurrent measurements.

동해 연안 표층퇴적물의 이동경로 (Transport Paths of Nearshore Surface Sediment on Coast of East Sea, Korea)

  • 모멘트 입도분석을 통해 구해진 퇴적물 입도조직변수(평균입도, 분급도 및 왜도)를 이용하여 동해 연안사질 퇴적물 이동경향을 밝힐수 있는 Gao and Collins(1992) 방법을 소개하였다. 그 결과로서 파랑에 기인한 연안류가 연안 퇴적물 이동에 관여하는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 동해 연안 표층퇴적물의 이동 경로를 제시할 수 있는 퇴적물이동벡터가 제시되었으며, 실제 이를 반영하는 지형적인 형태로서 남대천 입구에 사취가 존재하는데 연안류에 의한 퇴적물 이동의 결과로 사취가 남쪽으로 길게 발달해 남대천과 바다와의 순환을 차단하는 결과를 가져왔다. 차후 이를 검증할만한 계절적인 조사와 수역학적인 관측이 보완되어야 할 것이다.

문화기반 산업유산 공간의 장소성 평가 연구 - 북경 798 예술지구를 중심으로 - (A Study on the Evaluation of Placeness of Industrial Heritages Space with Cultural Characteristics - Focused on Beijing 798 Art Zone in China -)

  • This study was to build a frame and direction of an analysis of the evaltion of placeness of industrial heritages space, and then to evaluate Beijing 798. First, by studying references, 15 elements in 6 dimensions were derived from the evaluation of placeness of industrial heritage and applied in the evaluation of placeness of Beijing 798 art zone. Second, the changes of Bejing 798 art zone can be classified in 4 steps, latency, quickening, growth, and union, which has been growing from studios with artists to complex cultural art place based on studios and gallery. Third, place characteristics of 798 art zone was analysis with the measurements of morphological, perceptual, social, visual, functional, and temporal points. Fourth, a survey was done in order to evaluate placeness of Beijing 798 art zone.In conclusion, the result of the evaluation of placeness of industrial heritages space through Beijing 798 art zone shows that uniqueness and indigenousness are highly valued which verifies that the differentiation from other places and uniqueness are the essential element.

수직으로 정렬된 산화아연 나노막대 광전극의 광전기화학적 특성 (Photoelectrochemical Properties of a Vertically Aligned Zinc Oxide Nanorod Photoelectrode)

  • We report on the fabrication and photoelectrochemical (PEC) properties of a ZnO nanorod array structure as an efficient photoelectrode for hydrogen production from sunlight-driven water splitting. Vertically aligned ZnO nanorods were grown on an indium-tin-oxide-coated glass substrate via seed-mediated hydrothermal synthesis method with the use of a ZnO nanoparticle seed layer, which was formed by thermally oxidizing a sputtered Zn metal thin film. The structural and morphological properties of the synthesized ZnO nanorods were examined using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, as well as Raman scattering. The PEC properties of the fabricated ZnO nanorod photoelectrode were evaluated by photocurrent conversion efficiency measurements under white light illumination. From the observed PEC current density versus voltage (J-V) behavior, the vertically aligned ZnO nanorod photoelectrode was found to exhibit a negligible dark current and high photocurrent density, e.g., $0.65mA/cm^2$ at 0.8 V vs Ag/AgCl in a 1 mM $Na_2SO_4$ electrolyte. In particular, a significant PEC performance was observed even at an applied bias of 0 V vs Ag/AgCl, which made the device self-powered.

First Report of Five Tobrilus Species (Nematoda: Triplonchida) from Korea

  • Member of the genus Tobrilus Andrássy, 1959, which belongs to Tobrilidae Filipjev, 1918, are known as free-living nematodes in freshwater habitat. This genus was previously unknown from Korea. Five Tobrilus species are here reported for the first time from Korea: Tobrilus aberrans (Schneider, 1925), Tobrilus diversipapillatus (Daday, 1905), Tobrilus gracilis (Bastian, 1865), Tobrilus longus (Leidy, 1851), and Tobrilus wesenbergi (Micoletzky, 1925). Specimens were collected from sediments of the Nakdong River in Korea. Morphological characters and measurements of the specimens generally agree with the original descriptions of Tobrilus species, except for some differences that can be attributed to intraspecific variation among populations(e.g., nerve ring position [% pharynx] and reproductive length). Each species can be distinguished from other members of the genus by specific characters (e.g., cephalic setae length and position, buccal cavity and pocket shape, vulva position, degree of development of reproductive system, and tail length and shape). Here, five species in the genus Tobrilus are fully redescribed and illustrated using optical microscopy images. DNA barcode sequence information (the D2-D3 region of 28S rDNA) is also provided for molecular species identification.

Chain orientation and Degradation Behavior of Poly[(R)-3-hydroxybutyrate] Lamellar Crystals

  • Topological changes caused by the alkaline and enzymatic attacks of solution-grown, chain-folded lamellar crystals (SGCs) of poly[(R)-3-hydroxybutyrate] P(3HB) have been studied in order to investigate the chain-folding structure in P(3HB) crystal regions. NaOH and an extracellular PHB depolymerase purified from Alcaligenes faecalis T1 were used for alkaline and enzymatic hydrolysis, respectively. The measurements were performed on crystals attached to a substrate which is inactive to degradation mediums. Both alkaline and enzymatic attacks lead to a breakup of the lamellar crystals along the crystallographic b-axis during initial erosion. Since hydrolysis preferentially occurs in amorphous regions, this morphological result reflects relatively loosely packed chains in core parts of lamellar crystals. Additionally, it was supported by the ridge formation along the b-axis in the lamellar crystals after thermal treatment at a low temperature because of the thermally sensitive nature of the loosely packed chains in lamellar crystals. However, the alkaline hydrolysis accompanied the chain erosions or scissions in quasi-regular folded lamellar surfaces due to smaller size of alkaline ions in comparison to the enzyme, resulting in the decrease of molecular weight.

First record of the Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin, Tursiops aduncus, in Korean waters

  • Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops sp.) commonly inhabit Korean waters, including the coastal waters of Jeju Island. However, their taxonomic position was unclear because of the validity of this genus. The genus Tursiops has recently been determined to comprise two species: the common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) and the Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops aduncus). To confirm the taxonomic position of bottlenose dolphins frequenting the coastal waters of Jeju Island, the external morphology and osteology of specimens from Jeju Island were examined. Photographs of free-swimming individuals were also used for determining external morphological characters. The cranial and meristic measurements fell within the ranges of T. aduncus. Osteological ratios were also consistent with those of T. aduncus. The presence of a prominent ventral spot was observed among some individuals. As a result, the dolphins mainly distributed in the coastal waters of Jeju Island were identified as Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins (T. aduncus) in terms of their cranial characters and ventral spotting. We propose a new Korean name, 'Nambang-keun-dol-go-rae'.

Echocardiographic Assessment of Papillary Muscle Size and Function in Normal Beagle Dogs

  • Morphologic changes or functional impairments of the papillary muscle (PM) can influence mitral valve competence. The purpose of this study was to investigate PM size and contractile function using two-dimensional and color tissue Doppler echocardiography in normal dogs. 35 unsedated Beagle dogs without cardiovascular disease were examined. The vertical (VD) and horizontal diameter (HD) of the posterior and anterior PM was measured at end-diastole, and compared with the thickness of the left ventricular posterior wall (LVPWd). Longitudinal systolic movement of the PM was quantified as myocardial velocity and strain using tissue Doppler. The VD, HD, and ratios (VD/LVPWd, HD/LVPWd, VD/HD) were significantly greater in the posterior than anterior PM (P < 0.001). The VD and HD of posterior PM and the HD of anterior PM were significantly correlated with LVPWd (r = 0.47, 0.44, and 0.42, respectively). Body weight was significantly correlated with VD of posterior PM (r = 0.37). The peak systolic tissue velocity of the PM was $4.93{\pm}1.25cm/sec$ and peak strain was $-30.83{\pm}11.92%$. PM size and systolic function can be quantitatively assessed using two-dimensional and tissue Doppler. The establishment of these objective PM measurements may be useful to evaluate morphological and functional abnormalities of the canine PM.
