  • A total of 67 watermelon accessions which include 37 accessions from Korean and 27 accessions from Turkish germplasm and 3 accessions of other related species from USA were investigated for morphological characteristics. The UPOV descriptor list for 56 characters (6 seedlings, 4 plants, 11 leaves, 5 flowers, 23 fruits and 7 seeds) was used in characterization. In addition, eight quantitative characters, hypocotyl length, cotyledon width, cotyledon length, fruit weight, fruit length, fruit width, thickness of outer layer of pericarp and soluble solid content were also measured. The 56 qualitatively scored characters were analyzed by principle coordinate analysis (PCoA) while the eight quantitative ones were subjected to principle component analysis (PCA). Morphological characterization result demonstrated that the accessions displayed high morphological diversity(how much percent?). A high level of phenotypic diversity was observed from the results of morphological characterization. However, plant growth habit and leaf blade flecking showed constant characters for all of the accessions. The Korean and Turkish watermelon genotypes are diverse groups and can be separated by both multivariate analysis of morphological characters although the grouping was more apparent in PCoS results.

  • Phragmites australis is the dominant and constructive species among plant communities in the wetlands of the downstream of Yellow River, China. Its morphological characters were high variable in different habitats. Studies on Morphological and RAPD variation of 15 P. australis populations from this region showed that soil salinity was the dominant ecological factor that affected the morphological characters of P. australis. The basal diameter, height, leaf length, leaf width, internode length, internode accounts, panicle length were negatively related to salinity. 194 loci were amplified by RAPD, of which 9 loci was highly negative-related to salinity, and showed a tendency to prefer the habitats with fresh water. 4 loci were positively related to the salinity, and showed a tendency to prefer the salinized habitats. Most loci were neutral to salinity. The morphological and genetic characters of BZH were special, and the speciality should not be determined by salinity. The morphological characters were affected by genetic information and environment. The morphological characters should change gradually and continuously along environmental gradient under plasticity, but should changed continuously or not in genetic control. The relevancies among quantitive characters, ecological factors and genetic variation in natural populations still will still be a focus and difficulty of ecological genetics of P. australis in the future.

  • For identification of genuine and misuse samples of Hu-Bak medicines, an morphological characters, and RAPD (random amplified polymorphic DNA) were performed. In this study, three samples were collected, of which two were genuine and one was misuse sample. Genuine samples of 'Hu-Bak' were Magnolia obovata Thunberg and Magnolia officinalis Rehder et Wilson. Misuse samples was Machilus thunbergii S. et Z. In the morphological characters, M. obovata Thunberg and M. officinalis Rehder et Wilson were similar, but M. thunbergii S. et Z. was different with cortex, cambium, and fibrous layer. The result of RAPD analysis, seven primers can distinguish between genuines and counterfeit samples of Hu-Bak medicines.

  • Five commercially valuable Korean Veneroid, Protothaca jedoensis, Ruditapes philippinarum, Saxidomus purpuratus, Cyclina sinensis and Meretrix lusoria were recognized by comparing internal and external morphological characters. As length of the primary tooth was directly grown proportional to shell size but all other characters were not measured according to size of shell. Hence, the morphological characters of these Veneroids may be estimated from the size of the unique primary tooth and it might be enough to be a good criterion for identification of species among Veneriods. Numerical index of hinge plate length of these species was assessed systematically, irrespective of measuring the length, height and width of the shell. The highest internal and external morphological similarity was observed between P. jedoensis and R. philippinarum and the lowest similarity was observed between P. jedoensis and M. lusoria. These similarities may be affected by multiple environmental factors as well as genetic characters. For artificial seed production of P. jedoensis, R. philppinarum, a closest relative among the five species, must be focussed.

  • Numerical analysis using morphological characters was done in order to clarify taxonomic circumscriptions and identities of Korean endemic, Cirsium setidens (Dunn) Nakai, Cirsium chanroenicum Nakai, and Cirsium toraiense Nakai ex Kitam.. Principal components analysis of C. setidens and C. chanroenicum using 29 morphological characters and 12 leaves characters revealed one group which could not separate. Identity of C. toraiense could not be confirmed by the destruction of habitat, similarity of morphological diagnostic characters between many specimens identified C. toraiense including type specimen and C. japonicum var. ussuriense. In considering the variational patterns of morphological characters, it is strongly suggested that identities of C. setidens f. alba, C. setidens var. niveo-araneum, and C setidens var. pinnatifolium should be recognized, but C. chanroenicum var. lanceolata should be included to circumscription of C. setidens.

  • In order to find useful taxonomic morphological characters, 17 taxa from East-Asia Astragalus and Oxytropis anertii were investigated. In this study, seed coat structure, fruit surface, and fruit anatomical structures were selected to classify the species in Astragalus. As a results, useful morphological and anatomical characters in East-Asia Astragalus were life cycle, leaflet shape, raceme, petal color, seed color, pod shape, absent or present of hairs in pod surface, bent degree of dorsal suture, and thickness of endocarp. Using medicinal sources in China, A. floridus, A. membranaceus, A. membranaceus var. mongholicus and A. tongolensis were formed same group. However, these were not completely consensus in the morphological characters. The other hand, A. koraiensis and A. sikokianus, which have controversial taxonomic issue, have clearly no differences morphological characters each other. Therefore, A. koraiensis, A. sikokianus, and A. bhotanensis should be conducted a comparative study on the DNA sequences and molecular cytology in order to clarify the taxonomic treatments in the near future.

  • Objectives : There are many secluded Chinese characters - so called Byeokja (僻字) in ancient classic literature, and Chinese characters that are not registered in Unicode and Variant characters (heterogeneous characters) that cannot be found in the current font sets often appear. In order to register all possible Chinese characters including such characters as units of information exchange, this study attempts to propose a method to encode the morphological information of Chinese characters according to certain rules. Methods : This study suggests the methods to encode the connection between the nodules constituting the Chinese character and the coordinates of the nodules. In addition to that, rules for expressing information about curves, expressions of aspect ratios of characters, rules for minimizing coordinate lines, and rules for expressing aggregation status of character components are added. Results : Through the proposed method, it is possible to generate codes of a certain length by extracting only information expressing the morphological configuration of characters. Conclusions : The method of character encoding proposed in this study can be used to distinguish variant characters with small variations in Byeokja, new Chinese characters and character strokes and to store and search them.

  • The general morphological characters of Lysimchia sect. Spicatae were reviewed. From the results, numerical analyses were conducted based on 34 morphological characters from 14 populations of three species in Korea in order to investigate the key characters among the treated taxa and taxonomic delimitation and to discuss the systematic relationship. Habitat, leaf apices, presence or absent of hair on leaves, stipules, stems and bracts, branch of stems, kind of hair on floral axis and pedicels, shape of florescens were important diagnostic characters to identify the species. The relationship between Lysimachia clethoides and L. barystachys was more close than that of L. fortunei based on the quantitative characters. Also, a new key was made up from the result.

  • Shoot weight of Orostachys japonicus should determine its profitability. The study was done to determine the effect of phosphorus and potassium fertilization (0, 5, 10, 20 kg $P_2O_5$ or $K_2O$ /1000 $m^2$) on its growth, morphological characters, and flowering. Night-break treatment of 2 hours at midnight were done since Aug. 25 when afterward samples were taken every 4 weeks to Nov. 16. Growth, morphological and flowering related characters were measured from each sample. Plant height, inflorescence length, number of leaves including bracts and stem diameter were increased with increased P and K levels. Leaf and bract, floret, shoot and total dry weights showed similar response to the above morphological characters although P fertilization more increased them than K fertilization. Florets were more formed with increased P and K levels but were not flowered due to the night-break treatment, meaning that P and K fertilization had little effect on anthesis of the florets formed.

  • Patterns of morphological variation in Polygonum setaceum Baldwin ex Elliott are examined, and the taxonomic significance of the varieties recognized by Fernald is reevaluated. The diagnostic characters used to differentiate the varieties in P. setaceum demonstrate virtually continuous variation, and broad geographic intergradation is recognized. Principal components analyses of major morphological characters also fail to separate the varieties. These results strongly suggest that recognition of var. setaceum, var. interjectum, and var. tonsum by Fernald is unwarranted.
