Methods : It was evaluated by using MTT assay, morphologic method, DNA fragmenation, NO generation, flow cytometry, immunocytochemistry analysis, RT-PCR, Western blot. Results : The obtained results are summarized as follows: 1. The MTT assay demonstrated that synovial cell viability was significantly inhibitted dose-dependently by treatment with bee venom and melittin in comparison with control. 2. The morphologic study demonstrated that synovial cell showed apoptosis after treatment with bee venom and melittin for 6 hours using microscope. 3. In case of NO generation bee venom group and melittin group showed significant inhibition in comparison with control. 4. The Flow cytometry demonstrated that apoptosis of synovial cell treated with bee venom and melittin was related with stop of cell cycle in stage of $G_0/G_1$. 5. DNA fragmenation demonstrated that synovial cell treated with bee venom and melittin showed DNA ladder below l Kbp. 6. Immunocytochemistry assay demonstrated that COX-II and PLA2 were strongly down-regulated by treatment with bee venom and melittin whereas iNOS was almostly not expressed by bee venom treatment and slightly expressed by melittin treatment. 7. RT-PCR analysis demonstrated that iNOS were strongly down-regulated by treatment with bee venom and melittin whereas COX-II was almostly not expressed by bee venom treatment and slightly expressed by melittin treatment. 8. Western blot demonstrated that iNOS were strongly down-regulated by treatment with $15{\mu}g/ml$ bee venom whereas COX-II was strongly down-regulated from $5{\mu}g/ml$ bee venom. Conclusions : These results suggest that bee venom and melittin have significant effect on cell death in synovial cell line and further study is needed in vivo.

  • The present study was performed to identify morphologic sub-groupings in Korean children with Class I malocclusions, and to find out anatomic differences between the sub-groups. Standardized lateral cephalometric radiographs of 152 Korean children, aged between 6 and 12 years, with Class I malocclusions were analyzed by the Counterpart Analysis. A statistical method, Ward's Minimum Variance Cluster Analysis, was employed to divide the sample into sub-groups those with similar morphologic characteristics. The results were as follows; 1. There appeared two facial types, Type I and Type II, in Korean children with Class I malocclusions, 48.7% and 51.3%, respectively. 2. In both sub-groups, there existed strong Class III skeletal patterns due to a counterclockwise rotation of the Middle Cranial Fossa alignment, and strong Class II skeletal patterns due to the long Posterior Maxillary vertical dimension and a clockwise rotation of the Ramus alignment. 3. There were no significant differences in Upper Anterior Facial Height between Type I and Type II, $52.6{\pm}2.92mm\;and\;52.8{\pm}3.23mm$, respectively. 4. The Lower Anterior Facial Height in Type II was longer ($66.0{\pm}4.03mm$) due to the long Posterior Maxillary vertical dimension, the clockwise rotation of the Ramus alignment, and a clockwise rotation of the Mandibular plane alignment than that of Type I ($64.2{\pm}4.15mm$).

Purpose: We wished to compare CT colonography with conventional colonoscopy for the detection of colorectal poiypoid lesions, and we wanted to evaluate the role of IV contrast-enhanced CT colonography for the differentiation between benign polypoid lesions and malignant polypoid lesions. Materials and Methods: Thirty-four consecutive patients underwent CT colonography prior to conventional colonoscopy, Precontrast prone-position CT images and post contrast supine position CT images were obtained and the virtual colonoscopic images were reconstructed, Axial, sagittal and presence, size and morphologic features of colorectal polypoid lesions, and thor these findings were compared with the colonoscopic findings. The degree of enhancement of colorecralpolypoid lesions was measured by subtracting the attenuation valves obtained with precontrastand postcontrast CT images for the differentiation of benignity and malignancy of the colorectal polypoid lesions. Results. Among 75 colorectal polypoid lesions identified on conventional colonoscopy, 49neoplasms were found on CT coloaographv, and the overall detection rate was 65,3%.Detection rate of lesions smaller than l0mm was 52.1%(24/46), and the detection rate for lesions equal to or larger than 10mm was 86.2%(25/29), Morphologic features of the sessile type lesions on CT colonography were well correlated with those noted on colonoscopy, but the stalks were not identified in 6 of 13 polyps on CT colonography. There was no statistical correlation between benignity and malignancy and the degree of contrast enhancement on CT colonography, Conclusion CT colonography is a useful modality for the detection of colorectal polypoid lesionsequal to or polyps. However, CT colonography cannot differentiate benignity from malignancy.

  • This study was performed to document the morphologic relationships between non-ossifying fibroma (NOF) and fibrous cortical defect (FCD), as well as to determine any new diagnostic clues. Eighteen patients with 21 NOFs and 14 patients with 15 FCDs found incidentally on radiography were included. The authors prospectively performed CT, MRI, or both on all subjects. The study included size, location, sclerotic property and contour of the periphery, as well as calcification of the matrix of the lesions and the distance from the lesion to the growth plate. The morphologic characteristics were thoroughly reviewed focusing on the presence of the cortical tract in the lesions. The size of the lesion and the distance from the growth plate were not correlated with the patient' age. The presence of the cortical tract was noted in 18(85.7%) out of 21 NOFs, and 10(66.7%) out of 15 FCDs. The presence of the cortical tract was correlated with the longitudinal length of the lesion and the distance from the growth plate. The presence of the cortical tract may be one of the important characteristics in NOF and FCD, and if the diagnosis of bony lesions is obscure by radiologic finding, its exsitence may be a good indicator of diagnosis for NOF or FCD.

  • The present study was aimed at investigating the adverse effects of dietary zearalenone (ZEA) (1.1 to 3.2 mg/kg diet) on serum hormones, morphologic and apoptotic measurements of genital organs in post-weaning gilts. A total of twenty gilts ($Landrace{\times}Yorkshire{\times}Duroc$) weaned at 21 d with an average body weight of $10.36{\pm}1.21kg$ were used in the study. Gilts were fed a basal diet with an addition of 0, 1.1, 2.0, or 3.2 mg/kg purified ZEA for 18 d ad libitum. Results showed that 3.2 mg/kg ZEA challenged gilts decreased (p<0.05) the serum levels of luteinizing hormone, however, serum levels of prolactin in gilts fed the diet containing 2.0 mg/kg ZEA or more were increased (p<0.05) compared to those in the control. Linear effects on all tested serum hormones except progesterone were observed as dietary ZEA levels increased (p<0.05). Gilts fed ZEA-contaminated diet showed increase (p<0.05) in genital organs size, hyperplasia of submucosal smooth muscles in the corpus uteri in a dose-dependent manner. However, the decreased numbers of follicles in the cortex and apoptotic cells in the ovarian were observed in gilts treated with ZEA in a dose-dependent manner. Degeneration and structural abnormalities of genital organs tissues were also observed in the gilts fed diet containing 1.1 mg/kg ZEA or more. Results suggested that dietary ZEA at 1.1 to 3.2 mg/kg can induce endocrine disturbance and damage genital organs in post-weaning gilts.

  • Dyskinesia can occur as a neurological abnormality due to stroke, and its incidence in stroke patients is reported to be about 1%. It is possible to classify dyskinesia into one of the morphologic types already classified clinically. However, a specific type of dyskinesia can occur; one which does not fall into the existing morphologic types. We experienced such a case of specific type dyskinesia, which couldn't be classified into the existing classification system. A 50-year-old man visited our hospital due to rhythmic dyskinesia of the right hand, which appeared during the resting state, and had developed one month after left subcortical infarction. Flexion and extension movements of the fingers at 3Hz appeared due to the impatient impulse to move. However, this abnormal movement could be easily suppressed under the patients will. We suggested that the abnormal movement was similar to akathisia from the fact that it occurred due to the internal desire to move and that the patient could suppress dyskinesia. However, the rhythmic tendency and lack of medication history of antipsychotics suggested that the movement was not the typical form of akathisia. The present case may represent a new clinical type of movement disorder developed after stroke. Considering the clinical pattern of the present case and following a review of the literature, we believe that it can be labeled, post-stroke rhythmic akathisia.

  • Gamijangsing-tang (GMJST) has been used for treatment of bone formation in traditional korean medicine. The purpose of this study is to examine effects of GMJST on bone metabolism. The effects on the osteoblasts were determined by measuring (1) cell proliferation, (2) alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, (3) osteoprotegerin (OPG) secretion. (4) The morphologic changes of cells were observed by light microscopy and electron microscopy. Mineralization of calcium was determined by quantitative alizarin red-S assay and mineralization of phosphate was observed by von kossa staining. The morphologic changes of mineralization on the cells were observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The effects on the osteoclast were investigated by tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) staining. Following results were obtained: Celluar activity of osteoblastic cells (MG-63) was significantly increased in 10-5 of dilution of GMJST. ALP and OPG activity of osteoblastic cells were increased in GMJST than normal MG-63 cell. Mineralization of osteoblastic cells were increased in GMJST than normal MG-63 cell. The activity of osteoclast cells (RAW 264.7) was significantly decreased in GMJST than normal MG-63 cell. From the results, GMJST stimulated the proliferation and mineralization of bone-forming osteoblast and inhibited by bone- lysis osteoclast.

  • Geo-hazard shows a rapid increasing tendency with establishment of frequent great slopes in various construction sites, especially in the unfavorable topographic condition in which about 70% of the surface is covered by the mountainous area. An repeatedly taking place on the heavy rain season is accompanied by a large scale of rockfall, and causes great damage to an individual as well as a property. Even though lots of field studies and fundamental studies have been performed to reduce this hazard, however, an essential study on the mechanism of the rockfall should be limited to the conventional studies on the slope reinforcement and/or the rockfall risk analysis. In this study, the mechanism of rockfall depending on the morphologic characteristics of slope has been simulated numerically with the PFC2D, one of the discrete element programs. For analyzing its mechanism, the input parameters relating to the slope such as surface condition, gradient, number of benches, bench gradient, and the ratio of bench width to rockfall size were taken into consideration.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the morphological changes of different simulated canals according to the preparation procedures. With the use of clear casting resin, simulated straight and curved canals were created so that canal preparation procedures could be directly visualized and compared. Thirty clear polyester casting resin blocks which contained four simulated canals divided into three groups; Group A($0^{\circ}$), Group B($15^{\circ}$), and Group C($30^{\circ}$). In each block, 3 canals were prepared different preparation techniques, which were conventional method, step-back method, and giromatic filing. But, one canal was not prepared as a control group. The results were as follows: 1. There was no difference on canal shape among three canal preparation methods in straight canals (Group A). 2. When conventional method and Giromatic filing were used in curved canals (Group B, C), elbow, zip and hour-glass shape were formed in apical third. 3. When conventional method and Giromatic filing were used in curved canals (Group B, C), tear-drop appearance developed at the site of the canal exit in curved canals. 4. In curved canals (Group B, C), file tend to straighten within the canal. 5. There was no difference on canal shape according to curved angle in step-back method (p > 0.1). But there was significant difference on canal shape according to curved angle in conventional method and Giromatic filing (p < 0.001). 6. Step-back method was significantly more effective than conventional method and Giromatic preparation in morphologic aspects of apical third of original canals.

  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to analyze the clinical and anatomic features involved in determining treatment modalities for anterior communicating artery (AcoA) aneurysms. Methods : The authors retrospectively evaluated 112 AcoA aneurysms with pretreatment clinical features including age, Hunt and Hess grade, medical or neurological comorbidity, and anatomical features including aneurysm size, neck size, dome-to-neck ratio, vessel incorporation, multiple lobulation, and morphologic scoring system. Post-treatment clinical results were classified according to the Glasgow Outcome Scale, and anatomic results in coiled patients were classified according to the modified Raymond scale. Using multivariate logistic regression, the probabilities for decision making between surgical clipping and coil embolization were calculated. Results : Sixty-seven patients (60%) were treated with surgical clipping and 45 patients (40%) with endovascular coil embolization. The clinical factor significantly associated with treatment decision was age (${\geq}$65 vs. <65 years) and anatomical factors including aneurysm size (small or large vs. medium), dome-to-neck ratio (<2 vs. ${\geq}$2), presence of vessel incorporation, multiple lobulation, and morphologic score (${\geq}$2 vs. <2). In multivariate analysis, older patients (age, 65 years) had significantly higher odds of being treated with coil embolization relative to clipping (adjusted OR=3.78; 95% CI, 1.39-10.3; p=0.0093) and higher morphological score patients (${\geq}$2) had a higher tendency toward surgical clipping than endovascular coil embolization (OR=0.23; 95% CI, 0.16-0.93; p=0.0039). Conclusion : The optimal decision for treating AcoA aneurysms cannot be determined by any single clinical or anatomic characteristics. All clinical and morphological features need to be considered, and a collaborative neurovascular team approach to AcoA aneurysms is essential.
