  • Isolation and identification, prevalence and density of Setaria microfilariae(mf) were investigated in the blood of 406 cattle slaughtered at the abatoirs in Yungnam province from February 1999 to March 2000. Nine ml of blood from the jugular vein was collected in a test tube including EDTA respectively. The blood was mixed(10 : 1) with 0.2% Saponin in saline solution. This mixture was diluted again(1 : 10) with saline solution and stirred. This diluted mixture was filtered using Millipore membrane filter with a pore size of $3.0{\mu}m$. Mf were recovered from the membrane in saline solution. Mf isolated were identified as Setaria digitata on the basis of morphologic characteristics. Infection rate of the mf of total 406 cattle was revealed as 6.40%. Seasonal prevalences of the mf were presented 9.46%(7/74) in Autumn, 7.05%(11/156) in Summer, 4.65%(4/86) in Winter and 4.44%(4/90) in Spring respectively. Average density of the mf of every 9ml blood in 26 positive cattle was revealed as 170(2-641) worms. Seasonal densities of the mf of 9ml blood were presented average 361(160-641) worms in Autumn, 205(16-620) worms in Summer, 108(6-204) worms in Spring, 6(2-11) worms in Winter respectively.

  • In order to determine the effects of Palmijihwangtangs on the hypothyroidism, the biochemical and morphologic effects of PALMIJIHWANGTANGS against 2-thiouracil-induced hypothyroidism in rats were examined. 1. Serum $T_3$ value was significantly incresed by the treatment with PALMIJIHWANGTANG-1, 2 and 3(p<0.05). 2. Serum $T_4$ value was significantly higher in PALMIJIHWANGTANG-1 and PALMIJIIIWANGTANG-2 treated groups than that of control group. In PALMIJIHWANGTANG-3 treated group, serum $T_4$ level was significantly higher and that of control group(p<0.01). 3. Scrum free $T_4$ value was significantly incresed in the PALMIJIHWANGTANG-1 and PALMIJIHWANGTANG-2 treated groups(p<0.05) 4. Total cholesterols was significantly decresed by the treatment with PALMIJIHWANGTANG-1(p<0.05). 5. The treament with the PALMIJIHWANGTANG-1, 2 and 3 resulted in the significantly decrease of serum ALT(p<0.05). 6. Thyroid gland weight was significantly increased in PALMIJIHWANGTANG-3 treated group(p<0.01). 7. Treatment with PALMIJIHWANGTANG-1, 2 and 3 effectively recovered the dystropy and degeneration of follicle in thyroid gland caused by 2-thiouracil. 8. There was no histological and functional lesion observed in the liver after treatment with PALMIJIHWANGTANG-1, 2 and 3. These results suggest that PALMIJIHWANGTANG may be effective in the treatment of hypothyroidism.

  • Mycoplasma pneumoniae strain CL-s attached to broth-covered surfaces was examined sequentially during growth from single cells for morphologic and ultrastructural changes using several different electron microscopic techniques. Changes in morphology revealed both round and spindle shapes and observation of cell transitions suggested some type of morphological cycle. The round to-ovoid cells observed in the early stages of growth appeared to be viable, and morphologically and ultrastructurally different from the spherical fors which were produced during the latter stage of growth. The spindle segments were detected appeared to be structurally the same as the terminal cored structure seen in thin sections and may be a growing point or an attachment site of the cell. A tubular structure was observed in the core of the terminal structure and a microtubule-like element appeared to bridge between some spindle segments. A matrix sunstance was observed around single cells as well in the intercellular space of the colonies prepared by critical point metrical triple-layered cytoplasmic mermbranes, surfaces, of which appeared to be structurally different each other, were observed in young cells, whereas symmetrical and thicker membranes were seen in older cells. Small bodies were found in 4d or older cultures and did not appear to contain any internal structures or an easily detectable unit membrane.

  • Statement of Problem. Commonly used classification systems do not inform for dentists the dimension of the available bone at a potential implant site although regarding a variety of morphologic and pathophysiologic aspects using schematic graphs. However, for the implantologist the availability of bone substance is most important independent whether it concerns the jaw basis or the alveolus. Purpose of Study. The present article refers to a new evaluation form, to analyze the available bone with regard to optional immediate loading site by site. According to a new systematic implant planning concept will be presented in two case reports. Results. The feasibility of the classification for planning and documentation of immediately loaded implants is presented in two case reports. Conclusion. The factor of bone support for immediate functional stability is important in dental implantology. The new systematic implant planning helps to systematically estimate the dimension (ASCIi classification) of the alveolus site by site to evaluate the possibility of immediate loading. The Gottingen classification thus aids to determine the degree of stability that can be expected for the planned solution.

  • Among developmental anomalies of tooth shape, fusion and gemination are comparatively common. Developed with different etiologies, both fusion and gemination show similar clinical features. Therefore, many clinicians have difficulty diagnosing those morpho-anatomic anomalies. The purpose of this study is to report malformed right maxillary first molar in a 20-year-old female. With the aid of computed tomography (CT), the tooth was diagnosed as fusion with supernumerary tooth and dental caries lesion was detected. After performing direct pulp capping, the tooth was permanently restored with microhybrid composite resin using direct method to alter union groove into smooth surface for improving oral hygiene management. Until 6 months of follow-up visits, patient's chief complaint was resolved and tooth is still vital. In conclusion, identifying exact anatomy, conservative treatment and improving oral hygiene are essential in managing unusual morphologic anomalies of tooth.

  • Implantation of an embryo occurs during the mid-secretory phase of the menstrual cycle, known as the "implantation window." During this implantation period, there are significant morphologic and functional changes in the endometrium, which is followed by decidualization. Many immune cells, such as dendritic and natural killer (NK) cells, increase in number in this period and early pregnancy. Recent works have revealed that antigen-presenting cells (APCs) and NK cells are involved in vascular remodeling of spiral arteries in the decidua and lack of APCs leads to failure of pregnancy. Paternal and fetal antigens may play a role in the induction of immune tolerance during pregnancy. A balance between effectors (i.e., innate immunity and helper T [Th] 1 and Th17 immunity) and regulators (Th2 cells, regulatory T cells, etc.) is essential for establishment and maintenance of pregnancy. The highly complicated endocrine-immune network works in decidualization of the endometrium and at the fetomaternal interface. We will discuss the role of immune cells in the implantation period and during early pregnancy.

  • The purposes of the present study were to describe the vortical and anteroposterior facial dysplasia, and to identify morphologic differences associated with various facial patterns. Anteroposterior dysplasia was classified by traditional Angle's malocclusion classification and according to vertical relationships based on the SN-MP angle, facial pattern was subclassified to 3 vertical groups in each malocclusion group. Each vertical group composed of 20 samples and total 180 samples aged from 9 to 14 years. The results were as follows; 1. The skeletal differences that lead to disportionate lower facial height in vortical and anteroposterior facial dysplasia were closely related to mandibular morphology. 2. Hyperdivergent group, compared with hypodivergent group, demonstrated decrease of SNA and SNB and linguoversion of maxillary and mandibular central incisors in all malocclusion groups. 3. Irrespective of rotation of the jaws, Wits appraisal was a useful measurement in evaluation of relative anteroposterior relationship of maxilla and mandible. 4. As SN-MP angle increased, anterior facial height, especially lower anterior facial height, demonstrated significant increase and intermaxillary space also tended to increase. 5. The correlation coefficients of SN-MP angle and PTFH/ATFH demonstrated the highest value in all malocclusion groups.

  • Dens invaginatus is a developmental variation resulting from invasination of the tooth crown of root before calcification. Teeth most affected are maxillary lateral incisors. The malformation shows a broad spectrum of morphologic variations and frequently results in early pulp necrosis. Root canal therapy may present severe problems because of the complex anatomy of the teeth. So, the early diagnosis of such malformation is crucial and a preventive approach has been recommended. This report describes three cases of dens invaginatus treatment.
