The Morison's formula has been commonly used in the determination of wave forces of sinusoidal waves acting on coastal or ocean structures of pile-supported type. In the case that plunging breakers are incident, the structures are subjected to impulsive breaking wave forces which are normally much larger than the Morison's. However, the impulsive breaking wave forces act in a very short time, and hence a dynamic structural analysis should be done to determine whether or not to include the forces in the design force items. In the present study, numerical methods for calculating the dynamic response of a vertically located cylindrical pile are developed. Static and dynamic displacements are then compared through several example analyses varying the structural properties of pile.

Dolphin mooring system can be a good candidate for the VLFS fastening system in view point of strength and effectiveness. In the design process of the dolphin system, precise calculation of the wave forces and the subsequent selecting the proper number of the piles adopted are one of the main factors. In this paper, one of the design process of the dolphin system is investigated and a proper configuration of the system is derived based on the structural characteristics of the system that was obtained through the structural analysis of the basic pile element confronted to the external loadings including wave impact load. It was found that lot the better design of ihe mooring system for VLFS, mono pile mooring system is more recommendable in a specific condition than other multi piles mooring system.

In this study, the dynamic modeling of floating offshore wind turbine system is reported and the dynamic behavior of the platform for the offshore wind turbine system is analyzed. The modeling of the wind load for a floating offshore wind turbine tower is based on the vertical profile of wind speed. The relative Morison equation is employed to obtain the wave load. ADAMS is used to carry out the dynamic analysis of the floating system that should withstand waves and the wind load. Computer simulations for four types of tension leg platforms are performed, and the simulation results for the platforms are compared with each other.

A reliability analysis of the gravity-based foundation of anoffshore wind turbine was performed by considering the uncertainties of the design variables, including environmental loads. The limit state functions of the gravity-based foundation were defined using the response limits of the support structures suggested in the DNV standard. The wind load couldbe obtained using the GH_bladed software, and the wave load was calculated using the Morison equation. Then, the extreme distributions of the wind and wave loads were estimated by applying the peak over threshold (POT) method to the wind and wave load data. The probability distribution characteristics of the soil properties were defined with reference to a southwest coast geotechnical survey report. The reliability index was evaluated for each failure mode using a first-order reliability method.

To establish a floating offshore wind turbine simulation model, a tension leg platform is added to an onshore wind turbine. The wind load is calculated by using meteorological administration data and a power law that defines the wind velocity according to the height from the sea surface. The wind load is applied to the blade and wind tower at a regular distance. The relative Morison equation is employed to generate the wave load. The rated rotor speed (18 rpm) is applied to the hub as a motion. The dynamic behavior of a 2-MW floating offshore wind turbine subjected to the wave excitation and wind load is analyzed. The flexible effects of the wind tower and the blade are analyzed. The flexible model of the wind tower and blade is established to examine the natural frequency of the TLP-type offshore wind turbine. To study the effect of the flexible tower and blade on the floating offshore wind turbine, we modeled the flexible tower model and flexible tower-blade model and compared it with a rigid model.

The magnitude of breaking wave forces given by plunging breakers incident on a pile structure is much greater than the forces calculated by Morison's formula, but those forces may act on pile for very short duration in the range of a few multiples of 0.01 second. Hence, a dynamic analysis for the impact forces of breaking waves may be necessary for the accurate determination of pile displacements in the first stage of design. The time series of the impact force along the pile length is thus required, which may be estimated from the pressure distribution. In the present study, breaking wave pressures are measured for a vertical pile at real field which is easily subjected to plunging breakers in stormy weather conditions. The measured data are analyzed and compared with other results to quantify the characteristics of breaking wave pressures in real fields.

In the present paper, the nonlinear analysis of dynamic response of the jacket type offshore structures subject to nonlinear fluid force is performed. Furthermore, several analysis methods, such as quasi-static analysis, Newmark-$\beta$ method and state vector time integration technique, and described and compared with each others in order to investigate the efficiency numerical of the schemes for this kind of nonlinear structural analysis. In the problem formulation, various environmental forces acting on the jacket type offshore structure have been studied and calculated. Particularly, hydrodynamic forces are calculated by using the Morison type formula, which contains the interaction effect between the motion of the structure and the velocity of fluid particles. Also, Stokes' 5th order wave theory and Airy's linear wave theory are used to predict the velocity distribution of the fluid particles. Finally, the nonlinear equation of motion of the structure is obtained by using three-dimensional finite element formulation. Based on the above procedures, two examples, i.e. a single pile and a typical offshore jacket platform, are studied in details.

When waves propagating over an underwater shoal break at the top of the shoal, wave heights are drastically decreased in the downstream breaking zone, but a secondary current shooting downstream with strong velocity can be induced by the breaking waves themselves. In the case that an offshore structure is placed in the breaking zone, the estimation of wave farce purely based on the visible wave height may cause an under-design of the structure. Thus, for the safe design of the structure, the breaking wave induced current should be necessarily considered in the comprehensive estimation of design load. In the present study, Boussinesq equation model to calculate the wave height distribution and breaking wave induced current was set up and applied to the scheme of a hydraulic model test previously undertaken. Based on the results of the Boussinesq model, fluid forces acting on the model structure were calculated and compared with the experimental results. The importance of the breaking wave induced current was quantitatively assessed by comparing fluid forces with or without current.
