Polycarbonate(PC)/montmorillonite (MMT) nanocomposites were prepared by solution and melt mixing methods. A d-spacing of the nanocomposites was measured by an X-ray diffractometer. Neat montmorillonite (MMT-Na) and MMTs modified by dodecyl ammonium (MMT-DA) or dimethyl hydrogenated tallow 2-ethylhexyl ammonium (MMT-25A) were used. The d-spacing value of PC/MMT-25A and PC/MMT-DA was higher than that of PC/MMT-Na. The d-spacing increased from around 12 to $37AA$ depending on the mixing method. PC was more readily introduced to the gallery of MMT as the molecular weight of PC reduced and the mixing time increased. PC/MMT-25A showed higher thermal stability by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) than PC/MMT-DA and PC/MMT-Na.
In this work, the effect of ozone treatment of montmorillonite (MMT) on the surface characteristics of montmorillonite and the thermal stability of MMT/polypropylene (PP) nanocomposites was investigated. The surface properties of MMT were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Also, the thermal stability of nanocomposites was investigated in thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). As a result, it was found that the silicate interlayers of the organically modified MMT (D-MMT) were increased by about 11${\AA}$, as compared with the MMT. Also, FT-IR showed that a new peaks at $2800\~2900\;cm^{-1}$ appeared due to the $CH_2$ mode in the D-MMT The ozone treatment of the MMT led to an increase of SiO or $SiO_2$ groups on MMT surfaces, resulting in increasing the oxygen-containing functional groups on MMT. The ozonized MMT had higher thermal stability than that of untreated nanocomposites. This was due to the improvement of interfacial bonding strengths, resulting from the acid-base interfacial interactions between PP and MMT.
The effects of maleic-anhydride-grafted polypropylene (PP-g-MAH) and montmorillonite (MMT) on the wear resistance of polypropylene (PP) were investigated. The surface of MMT was modified with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane, and the interfacial interaction between PP and MMT was improved using PP-g-MAH. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy was used to confirm that silane was grafted on the surface of MMT. The Taber abrasion test and scanning electron microscopy were used to determine the wear resistance and observe the surface morphology of PP, respectively, after wear testing. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy was used to compare the effects of PP-g-MAH and silane modification of MMT on the dispersion of MMT. The results indicated that silane was successfully grafted onto the surface of MMT. Moreover, the wear resistance of PP was improved by the addition of MMT. The wear resistance of PP composites comprising silane-modified MMT and PP-g-MAH was higher than those of other PP composites. This was attributed to silane improving the interfacial interaction between MMT and PP.
Sodium-montmorillonite ($Na^+$-MMT) was introduced into single wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT)/epoxy composite to investigate the effect of MMT size and MMT/SWCNT ratio on the mechanical and electrical properties of composite. Three different sizes of MMTs were used and all were found to function as effective dispersion aids for SWCNTs. Mechanical properties of SWCNT/epoxy composite increased with MMT content; tending to decrease once the MMT content reached a critical level. However, the surface electrical resistance decreased with increasing MMT content and tended to increase after the critical content was reached. Critical MMT/SWCNT ratio for maximum mechanical properties and minimum electrical resistivity was strongly dependent on the MMT size. Critical MMT/SWCNT ratio was decreased with MMT size.
Layered silicate clay montmorillonite (MMT) has been used in nanocomposite coating to improve corrosion protection by reinforcing the barrier property. The better dispersion of MMT in the coating produces a higher barrier effect. Pretreatment with MMT could favor the delamination of clay platelets, facilitating MMT dispersion in the coating. In the present work, a montmorillonite/silica (MMT/Si) composite was prepared by the in situ sol-gel method. x-ray diffraction measurements and field-emission scanning electron microscopy observations showed silica crystal formation and increased basal spacing between the MMT platelets. Composite MMT/Si particles were introduced in an epoxy resin to reinforce the corrosion protection of the coating applied on the AA2024 surface. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was performed to characterize the protective property of the coating. The results demonstrated the high barrier effect of the coating containing 5 wt% of MMT/Si. Adhesion evaluation after a salt spray test exhibited a high adherence to the epoxy coating containing MMT/Si.
A total of 96 growing barrows (Duroc${\times}$Landrace${\times}$Yorkshire) at an average BW of 20.2 kg were used to investigate the effects of montmorillonite (MMT) or copper-bearing montmorillonite (Cu-MMT) on growth performance, intestinal microflora, digestive enzyme activities of pancreas and small intestinal contents, and the apparent nutrient digestion. The pigs were allocated to three groups with 32 pigs per treatment for 42 days and the average BW at the end of the experiment was 49.7 kg. The three dietary treatments were basal diet only (control group), basal diet +1.5 g/kg MMT, and basal diet +1.5 g/kg Cu-MMT. The results showed that supplementation with Cu-MMT significantly improved growth performance as compared to control and pigs fed with Cu-MMT had higher average daily gain than those fed with MMT. As compared to control, supplementation with Cu-MMT significantly reduced the total viable counts of Escherichia coli and Clostridium in the small intestine and proximal colon. Supplementation with MMT had no significant influence on intestinal microflora, although there was a tendency for Escherichia coli and Clostridium to be lower than the control. Pigs fed with Cu-MMT had lower viable counts of Escherichia coli in colonic contents than those fed with MMT. Although supplementation with MMT improved the activities of the digestive enzymes in the small intestinal contents, the tendency was not significant. Supplementation with Cu-MMT significantly improved the activities of total protease, amylase and lipase in the small intestinal contents. Supplementation with MMT or Cu-MMT improved the apparent nutrient digestion.
MAPTAC-MMT was prepared by exchanging the mineral cation (sodium montmorillonite) with 3-(methacryloyl amino) propyltrimethyl ammonium chloride, thus rendering the mineral organophilic and forming polymerizable moieties directly bonded to the surface of montmorillonite (MMT). Thermoresponsive nanocomposites (PNIPAM-MMT) were synthesized by polymerization of N-isopropyl acrylamide in an aqueous suspension of MAPTAC-MMT at room temperature. Thermoresponsive nanocomposites exhibited a low critical solution temperature (LCST) similar to unmodified poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAM). The LCST of thermoresponsive nanocomposites decreased in proportion to the amount of MAPTAC-MMT. TGA results showed that the thermal stability of thermoresponsive nanocomposites was improved compared to PNIPAM itself the thermoresponsive polymer.
Heterogeneous metallocene catalysts supported on montmorillonite (MMT), [$Cp_2ZrCl_2$/MMT, $Cp_2ZrCl_2$/MAO/MMT, and $Cp_2ZrCl_2$ + MAO/MMT], were prepared with three different methods of immobilization and tested for ethylene polymerization. The heterogeneous catalysts immobilized on organo clay (30B-MMT) showed the higher metal loading and polymerization activity than those immobilized on natural clay $Na^+-MMT$. These results suggest that the hydroxyl groups of organo clay interlayers react with the MAO and catalyst through the chemical bond. The metallocene catalyst supported directly on MMT showed lower activity for ethylene polymerization compared to the homogeneous systems, while MMT/MAO/$Cp_2ZrCl_2$, catalysts treated with MAO before impregnation, showed a higher activity. The polymers obtained from MMT-supported catalysts have higher melting point, molecular weight and molecular weight distributions than those of homogeneous catalysts. The polymer particles with increasing significant size. Ethylene polymerization over 30B-MMT/MAO/$Cp_2ZrCl_2$ catalyst was also performed varying the process variables to optimize the process conditions.
The flame retardancy was evaluated to present as the fundamental data to decrease the fire hazard of polymers and life losses according to the addition of clay. The combustion characteristics were examined to increase flame retardancy and to decrease smoke yield of epoxy by the addition of clay such as montmorillonite in this study. For this study, the experiments of flame retardancy were conducted the measurement of the limiting oxygen index (LOI), char yield, and smoke density. As MMT concentration increased, LOI and char yield increased. This result showed that the flame retardancy of epoxy/MMT composite was improved. On the contrary, smoke density increased.
Cotton fabric was treated with montmorillonite (MMT) so as to evaluate its effectiveness on improving its wrinkle resistance. The MMT in emulsion form was applied to cotton fabric by padding and finally the wrinkle resistance of the MMT-treated cotton fabric was improved. Furthermore, instrumental methods were used for studying the presence of MMT particles on the cotton fabric surface. It was noted that nano-scale MMT particles adhered on the fiber surface and the particle size played an important role in influencing the wrinkle resistance of the cotton fabric. The experimental results are discussed thoroughly in this paper.
