The expectation of future cooling and heating degree day of the Seoul and Ulsan using HadCM3 (HadCM3를 이용한 서울 및 울산지역의 미래 냉.난방도일 예측)

  • The concern in energy reduction in the field of architecture which takes up a big weight in domestic energy consumption is gradually increasing. For this reason, a lot of research work on this matter is being carried out. Particularly, it is generally required that currently used system in a structure for energy reduction should be maximized in its efficiency. In addition, research on several energy reduction typed systems is underway. Such a research work should not only include the one in time of the present but also keep up with the trend for future-oriented research. This research paper forecasted and analyzed the trend for global warming and demand of a structure for energy in the future by applying climate scenarios to cooling degree-day and heating degree-day. Also, this research found out the decrease in heating degree-days and increase in cooling degree-days until this moment due to the progress of global warming. In addition, as for heating degree-days in the future forecasted on the basis of HadCM3, it is estimated that the range of decrease could be ever bigger starting 2040 in case of Seoul and also starting 2010 in case of Ulsan ever after respectively. In case of cooling degree-days, it is estimated that its increase range could be bigger abruptly starting 2050, and after 2080, its increase range would be much bigger.

Structural Engineering of 60m Twin-hull typed Car-ferry (60m급 쌍동형 카페리 구조 엔지니어링 고찰)

  • This paper suggests study of basic structure design and structural analysis for the twin car-ferries. The rules and methodology for the analysis of strength of medium and small high speed vessels with a length of more than 50m and a width / ratio of more than 12, such as car-ferries, have not been clarified yet. Therefore, in this paper, the scantling of the members is based on the Korea Classification standards, and the car-ferries standards were additionally applied to verify the structural strength of the design. The results of this study are expected to be useful as basic data related to structural design and structural analysis of high speed twin car-ferries.

  • Due to the recent technological advance, new types of AS/RS which can handle containers are being developed, and it is expected that they will be applied to related industries before long. Some companies and institutes in our country have constructed pilot systems for high-density-high-stacking systems and tested them to develop AS/RS-typed warehouses for containers. Along with this kind of construction efforts, development of rules to operate such systems efficiently and safely is also important. When outward-bound shipment is scheduled in container port, re-marshalling which rearranges containers in the yard to make shipment easy is conducted. In this paper, operating rules for the re-marshalling as well as simulation experiments to evaluate the performance of the rules are presented. We suggested two kinds of alternative sets of operating rules for re-marshalling and described the relevant logics corresponding to all possible cases for each alternative of operating rules. Through various simulation experiments, we found that each alternative has the merits and demerits at the same time and we could not say the one is always superior to the other. As a useful strategy, changing the applying operating rule is recommended from moment to moment depending on the expected number of operations at the landside input/output position.

  • Virtual reality that we have seen from the movies in 80's and 90's is hawing near based on the rapid progress of science together with a computer technology. Various virtual reality system developments (such as VRML, HMD FishTank, Wall Type, CAVE Type, and so on) and the advancement of those systems make for the embodiment of virtual reality that gives more sense of the real. Virtual reality is so immersive that makes people feel like they are in that environment and enable them to manipulate without experiencing the environment at first hand that is hard to experience in reality. Virtual reality can be applied to the spheres, such as education, high-level programming, remote control, surface exploration of the remote satellite, analysis of exploration data, scientific visualization, and so on. For some connote examples, there are training of a tank and an aeroplane operation, fumiture layout design, surgical operation practice, game, and so on. In these virtual reality systems, the actual operation of the human participant and virtual workspace are connected each other to the hardware that stimulates the five senses adequately to lend the sense of the immersion. There are still long way to go, however, before long it will be possible to have the same feeling in the virtual reality as human being can have by further study and effort. In this thesis, the basic definition, the general idea, and the kind of virtual reality were discussed. Especially, CAVE typed in reality that is highly immersive was analyzed in definition, and then the method of VR programming and modeling in the virtual reality system were suggested by showing the restoration process of Kyongbok Palace (as the content of the original form of the culture) that was made by KISTI(Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information) in 2003 through design process in virtual reality system. Through these processes, utilization of the immersive virtual reality system was discussed and how to take advantage of this CAVE typed virtual reality system at the moment was studied. In closing the problems that had been exposed in the process of the restoration of the cultural property were described and the utilization plan of the virtual reality system was suggested.

  • This paper suggests study of basic structure design and structural analysis for the twin car-ferries. The rules and methodology for the strength analysis of medium and small sized high speed vessels with a length of more than 50m and a length/width ratio of more than 12, such as car-ferries, have not been clarified yet. Therefore, in this paper, the members scantling were carried out using the KR Rule, and the car-ferry exclusive vessel standard were further applied to verify the structural strength the design. The scantling of the members is based on the Korea Classification standards, and the car-ferries standards were additionally applied to verify the structural strength of the design. Especially, the ultimate strength of hull girder was additionally carried out by using car-ferry exclusive vessel standard, and proposed to overcome ambiguity of design by existing standard. The results of this study are expected to be useful as basic data related to structural design and structural analysis of high speed twin-hull car-ferries. The present car-ferry design has a sufficient safety margin in strength point of view according to the KR rule.

TYME: Interactive Typography for a poetic expression in Multimedia Environment (TYME: 멀티미디어 환경에서 시적 표현을 위한 인터랙티브 타이포그래피)

  • TYME is an interactive typography program based on the ephemeral nature of time. It is a text based poetic tool, built with Processing. This project is presented as a performance that utilizes a computer with a display screen, a projector, and speakers. As the user types, white characters appear, flow on the score on the screen and trigger jazz sounds, then characters disappear into black space in several seconds on the screen like smoke. Typography from this invented instrument is evocative and wistful, and allows the user to associate with ephemeral time. While typing the characters as though playing an instrument at intervals of time, the user can freeze the motion and print out or save otherwise fleeting moment with a button. I intend to contain both characteristics: the amorphous shape of smoke and the elusive attribute of smoke for the expression of intangible and ephemeral time. Every alphabetic shape is derived from the video dips that I shot of smoke. The resulting alphabetic images are then programmed using the Processing scripting language and which can then be typed on the screen with a keyboard. TYME could be a model as a project that reflects the unfixed quality of digital typography, and as a design approach for interactive expressive typography by scripting code. This project also represents the characteristics of typographic play, which can be realized in an computational environment like this model.
