  • This study is concerned with the experimental test and numerical analysis of the heat transfer and solidification of the molten metal pool with overlying coolant with boiling. In the test, the metal pool is heated from the bottom surface and coolant is injected onto the molten metal pool. Experiments were performed by changing the test section bottom surface temperature of the metal layer and the coolant injection rate. The two-phase boiling coolant experimental results are compared against the dry test data without coolant or solidification of the molten metal pool, and against the crust formation experiment with subcooled coolant. Also, a numerical analysis is performed to check on the measured data. The numerical program is developed using the enthalpy method, the finite volume method and the SIMPLER algorithm. The experimental results of the heat transfer show general agreement with the calculated values. The present empirical test and numerical results of the heat transfer on the molten metal pool are apparently higher than those without coolant boiling. This is probably because this experiment was performed in concurrence of solidification in the molten metal pool and the rapid boiling of the coolant. The other experiments were performed without coolant boiling and the correlation was developed for the pure molten metal without phase change.

  • In this study, the molten metal protective performance of various molten metal protective clothing materials such as herringbone twill laminated aluminium foils, oxydized-polyacrylonitrile laminated with aluminium deposited polyethylene terephthalate films, twill fabric laminated with aluminium deposited polyethylene terephthalate films and nonwoven laminated with aluminum deposited polyethylene terephthalate films, were evaluated according to modified EN ISO 9185. The results showed that the molten metal protective performance of tested samples improved with the increase in fabric structure density, weight and thickness. In addition the effect of the thickness of aluminum foil on the molten metal protective performance is not significant. It was found the fabric is more important in the molten metal splash protective clothing.

  • Recently, applications of electromagnetic forces in the molten metal delivery system like LIM(linear induction motor) have been developed because it is dangerous to deliver the molten metal. Therefore it is important to get the fundamental characteristics of LIM. In this paper, we analyzed about characteristics of LIM for molten metal transportation by 2D finite element method. Then we compares the characteristics of LIM for molten metal transportation according to parameters.

  • A molten metal droplets are deposited onto solid substrate for solid freeform fabrication, Collision dynamic and substrate heat transfer associated with solidification determine the final shape of molten metal droplets. In this study, the experimental model, based on the variational condition with substrate temperature and falling height, was produced reliable optimal data of droplet pattern.

  • In this study, the thermal behavior of adaptor housing was analyzed by the numerical method. The boundary conditions used to die casting process were the temperature of molten metal and injection time. As the temperature of the molten metal increased, the tensile strength of the product decreased by the blow hole generated in the molten metal, and the decreasing tendency was gradually decreased. As the injection time of the molten metal increased, the heat flux rose, but the degree of the increase was very small. So, the injection time of the molten metal had little effect on the thermal behavior and diffusion of the adapter housing. As a result, the heat of the molten metal was transferred into the housing and the thermal behavior spread widely.

  • It is important to develop more efficient and productive casting processes for an automated high precision molten-metal casting system. Detailed analysis of molten-metal flow in the casting process by the numerical approach will help to optimize the control of a ladle. In this study, the smoothed particle hydrodynamics method was applied to analyze casting flow characteristics with different tilting angular speed and initial molten-metal level. The smoothed particle hydrodynamics technique has advantages to easily handle non-linear free surface behavior with the absence of a computational mesh. We found that tilting angular speed has relatively greater effect on the casting flowrate and that the effect of the initial molten-metal level is only minor. Further extensive study will be necessary to find an optimal condition for high efficient casting system.

  • This paper presents a study of the solder bumping process. The theoretical model, based on the variational principle instead of solving the Navier-Stokes equation with moving boundaries, was developed to considered the energy dissipation in semi-solid phase and the approximate solidification time of the molten metal droplet. The simulation results revealed that the developed model could reasonably describe the collision behavior of molten metal with solid surface. Simulations were made with variation of initial droplet temperature, substrate metal and initial substrate temerature.

  • An experimental study has been performed on natural convection heat transfer with a rapid crust formation in the molten metal pool of a low Prandtl number fluid. Two types of steady state tests, a low and high geometric aspect ratio cases in the molten metal pool, were performed. The crust thickness by solidification was measured 88 a function of boundary surface temperatures. The experimental results on the relationship between the Nusselt number and Rayleigh number In the molten metal pool with a crust formation were compared with existing correlations. The experimental study has shown that the bottom surface temperature of the molten metal layer, in all experiments. is the major influential parameter in the crust formation, duo to the natural convection flow. The Nusselt number of the case without a crust formation in the molten metal pool is greater than that of the case with the crust formation at the same Rayleigh number. The present experimental results on the relationship between the Nusselt number and Rayleigh number In the molten metal pool match well with Globe and Dropkin's correlation. From the experimental results, a now correlation between the Nusslet number and Rayleigh number in the molten metal pool with the crust formation was developed as $Nu=0.0923(Ra)^{0.302}$ ($2{\times}10^4< Ra<2{\times}10^7$).

  • The objective of this development project is to localize an automatic molten metal supplier that has been distributed by WESTOMAT, Germany, throughout the world. To achieve this purpose, an energy-saving pressurized dosing furnace and molten metal differential pressure control system that Is able to automatically supply a determined quantity of aluminum molten metal were developed. The localized equipment was installed in a site. Also, the results of the test operation of this equipment can be summarized as follows: It was able to improve the productivity because there were small decreases in supplying speeds and small losses in wastes compared to the existing mechanical molten metal supplier. Also, it was able to minimize the cost in maintenances due to the direct application of high temperature molten metals to molds. In addition, there were small energy losses due to the use of high thermal insulators compared to the existing reverberating furnace and able to prolong the life-time of furnaces and produce good quality nonferrous metals because it represented small carbon refractories and alumina in applied molten metals. Furthermore, it demonstrated no particular differences by objectively comparing it with the product by WESTOMAT.

  • The feasibility of a molten metal as a bed material of a pyrolysis system was investigated. The molten metal has various advantages such as high thermal conductivity, wide operating range and low viscosity. Tin was selected since its physical characteristics are suitable for the purpose. As a results, it was found that pyrolytic oil yield and reaction rate were significantly enhanced with the molten Tin. In addition, oxygen component of the product oil was decreased due to Tin oxidation.
