  • Low molecular weight species were extracted from PC and SAN by a solvent extraction method in order to investigate the effect of low molecular weight species on interfacial tension and affinity between PC and SAN. From the analysis of molecular weight distribution by the GPC, it was confirmed that the low molecular weight species were effectively eliminated by the solvent extraction. Interfacial tension measurements and morphological observation were carried out with the PC and SAN of which the low molecular weight species were extracted. Interfacial tension was increased and the infinity was decreased for the extracted PC and SAN pair. This result implied that the low molecular weight species play a role as a compatibilizer between two polymers. Among two polymers, low molecular weight SAN contributes more in the compatibilization. Thus, it is favorable to use SAN containing a larger amount of low molecular weight species in fabrication of PC/ABS blend.

  • Each of the two polycarbonates (PC) of different molecular weights was blended with acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) under high-shear rate processing to afford PC/ABS. Sizes of ABS dispersed phases and mechanical properties of PC/ABS blends were investigated and high-shear rate processing of PC/ABS was carried out by changing screw speed and processing time. Prepared specimens were examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM) to observe morphology changes. Sizes of ABS dispersed phases in PC/ABS blends were observed to decrease gradually as screw speeds increased. Tensile strengths and elongations of specimens were investigated by universal testing method (UTM) to study the influence of molecular weight of PC exerting on PC/ABS blends. As a result, PC1/ABS blends (PC1: higher molecular weight PC) exhibited more strengthened properties than PC2/ABS (PC2: lower molecular weight PC). The tensile strength of PC1/ABS showed an increasing tendency when the screw speed increased, and the elongation did not show a significant decrease, but increased slightly with increasing shear time at a constant screw speed of 1000 rpm.

  • Graft copolymerized polycarboxylate(PC)-type superplasticizers(PCs) which have carboxylic acid with $\pi$ bond among the molecular structure and polyethyleneglycol methyl ether methacrylate(PMEM) were synthesized by free radical reaction and investigated the chemical structure, polymerization condition, and physical and chemical properties. Also, the effects of PCs in the dispersion, adsorption and hydration of cement were evaluated. As the molecular weight of graft chain decreases, the adsorption amount on cement particles increased. It was advantageous for the flow to reduce molar ratio, the lower the side bone molecular weight, and increase the molar ratio, the larger the side bone molecular weight. The hydration reaction speed was highly delayed at day 1, due to increase in molar ratio and reduction in side bone molecular weight, but it was recovered in the days after.

  • The branched polycarbonates (B-PCs) with two different branching agents were synthesized from melt polymerization. The contents of branching agent were in the range of 0.001~0.005 mol%. The chemical structure of the synthesized PC was determined by FTIR, $^1H$ NMR, and $^{13}C$ NMR, spectroscopy. The molecular weight, glass transition and degradation temperatures were determined by GPC, DSC, and TGA. The molecular weight of the phloro type B-PC had a lower value than the other one, and the glass transition temperature increased with molecular weight. Compared with linear PC, the rheological properties of the B-PC indicated an increase of complex viscosity in the low frequency region and shear thinning tendency. Power law index(n) representing shear thinning was calculated by linear regression and the values were in the range of 0.483~0.996. The rheological properties of the B-PCs were measured by a dynamic rheometer.

  • The thermal degradation of polymethyl methacrylate(PMMA) blend namely polymethyl methacrylate-polycarbonate(PMMA-PC) blend and polymethyl methacrylate-polystyrene(PMMA-PS) blend were carried out by isothermal method under air at several heating temperature from 220 to $270^{\circ}C$. Molecular weight changes during the thermal decomposition were monitored by means of the viscosity average molecular weight($\bar{M}v$). The viscosity average molecular weight was determined by Gel Permeation Chromatography(GPC). The dominant process in the degradation of PMMA-PC and PMMA-PS blend were main chain scission randomly due to weak links that may be distributed along the polymer backbone and the initial rate which the bonds are broken is not sustained. The infra-red spectra of degraded PMMA-PS blend show that the presence of aromatic ketone band at $1685cm^{-1}$. However, the infra-red spectra of degraded PMMA-PC blend show that the presence of hydroperoxide band at $3450cm^{-1}$. Thus indicating that the weak links are attacked by oxygen from the air and produce hydroperoxide or ketone. The activation energies of PMMA-PC blend and PMMA-PS blend were 18.2 and 17.9 Kcal/mol, respectively.

  • Purpose : To evaluate the NMR relaxation properties and imaging characteristics of tissue-specificity for a newly developed macromolecular MR agent. Materials and methods : Phthalocyanine (PC) was chelated with paramagnetic ion, Mn.2.01g (5.2 mmol) of Phthalocyanine was mixed with 0.37g (1.4 mmol) of Mn chloride at $310^{\circ}C$ for 36 hours and then purified by chromatography (CHC13/CH3OH 98/2 v/v, Rf, 0.76) to obtain 1.04g (46%) of MnPC (molecular weight= 2000d). The $T1}T2$ relaxivity of MnPC was measured in 1.5T(64 MHz) MR using 0.1 mM MnPC. The MR image characteristics of MnPC was evaluated using spin-echo (TR/TE=500/14 msec) and gradient-echo (FLASH) (TR/TE=80/4 msec, flip angle=60) techniques in 1.57 MR scanner. The images of rabbit liver were obtained every 10 minutes up to 4 hours. To study the effect of concentration on image, 20 mM, 50 mM, 100 mM of MnPC were tested. Results : The relaxivities of MnPC at 1.5T(64MHz) were Rl=7.28 $mM^{-1}S^{-1},{\;}R2=55.56mM^{-1}S^{-1}$. Compared to the values of Gd-DTPA (Rl[=4.8 $mM^{-1}S^{-1})$], R2[=5.2 $mM^{-1}S^{-1}])$]), both T1/T2 relaxivities of MnPC were higher than those of Gd-DTPA. For both of SE and FLASH techniques, the contrast enhancement reached maximum at 10 minutes after bolus injection and the enhancement continued for more than 2 hours. When compared with small molecular weight liver agents such as Gd-EOB-DTPA, Gd-BOPTA and MnDPDP, MnPC was characterized by more prolonged enhancement time. The time course of MR images also revealed biliary excretion of MnPC. Conclusion : We developed a new macromolecular MR agent, MnPC. The relaxivities of MnPC were higher than those of small molecular weight Gd-chelate. Hepatic uptake and biliary excretion of MnPC suggests that this agent is a new liver-specific MR agent.

  • We successfully prepared high-flow polycarbonate (PC) by blending commercial PC with a low molecular weight PC oligomer. The oligomer was synthesized by the addition of a large quantity of mono functional phenol groups, and the chain end group was reacted with p-tertiary butyl phenol (PTBP) to block the reactivity. The viscosity average molecular weight ($M_v$) for the oligomer was about 4,000-5,000 g/mol, compared to ~19,000 g/mol for the PC blend obtained by blending 10 wt% of the prepared oligomer with the commercial grade PC ($M_v$ of 21,000 g/mol). The blended PC had a melt flow index of 45, which is 2.5 times higher, and a processing temperature that was $20^{\circ}C$ lower, than that of commercial grade PC having a similar $M_v$.

  • Polycarbonates (PCs) with six different end capping agents were synthesized from melt polymerization. Chemical structure of the synthesized PC was determined by FT-IR spectroscopy. The average molecular weight and distribution, glass transition and thermal degradation temperatures were determined by GPC, DSC and TGA. Average molecular weight changed with the chemical structure of end capping agent, and 4-tert-butylphenol was estimated as the optimum end capping agent. The average molecular weights of PCs decreased with the concentration of the agent, the number average molecular weight was observed as 20,000 - 30,000 when 0.05-0.15 mol% of 4-tert-butylphenol added in PCs. The melt viscosities and glass transition temperature of the PCs decreased with molecular weight. The change for adding method of the agent affected on both the molecular weight distribution and decrease in power law index.

  • Fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composites are applied to transport industries to lightweight of body, and applications will be expanded gradually. In this study, the impregnation and mechanical properties of continuous glass fiber (GF) reinforced polycarbonate (PC) composites were evaluated with different molecular weights of PC. The continuous GF reinforced PC composite were prepared by using GF fabric and PC film via continuous compression molding method. The melting flow index and tensile strength of PC matrix were evaluated with different molecular weights. Mechanical properties (tensile, flexural, and compressive) and pore rate of GF/PC composite were evaluated with different molecular weights of PC. The fracture behavior was analyzed to fracture surface of GF/PC composite using FE-SEM images. As these results, it was condition of representing the best mechanical property that the GF/PC composite was prepared by using PC of 20,000 g/mol as matrix.

  • This research investigated the process of removing cadmium and tested the detoxification mechanism of the cadmium-binding peptide (Cd-BP) from Rumex crispus. Phytochelatin-like cadmium-binding peptide (PC-Cd-BP) of Rumex crispus was purified and identified. Rumex crispus was exposed to 4.3 mg Cd/L for seven days. Heat-treated supernatant fraction taken by root tissues showed traces of PC-Cd-BP An analysis of the material through Gel-filteration chromatography on the Sephadex G-75 column showed two symmetrical Cd-BP peaks. The major peak with the smaller molecular weight was further purified by $C_{18}$ reverse-phase HPLC to produce apparent homogeneity. The amino acid composition of Cd-BP from Rumex crispus included cysteine (22.6%), glutamate and glutamate acid (20%), and glycine (12%). It was similar the amino acid composition of most PC. The molecular weight of the purified peptide was determined at 568-706 Da by MALDI-TOF MS. Therefore, the Cd-BP of Rumex crispus was PC-Cd-BP consisting of isopeptides.
