  • Organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) show a lot of advantages for display purposes. Because OLEDs provide white light emission with a high efficiency and stability, it is desirable to apply OLEDs as an illumination light source and back light in LCD displays. We synthesized new emissive materials, namely $Zn(HPB)_2$ and Zn(HPB)q, which have a low molecular compound and thermal stability. We studied white OLEDs using $Zn(HPB)_2$ and $Zn(PQ)_2$. The fundamental structures of the white OLEDs were ITO / NPB (40 nm) / $Zn(HPB)_2$ (40 nm) / $Zn(PQ)_2$ (20 nm) / LiAl (120 nm). As a result, we obtained a maximum luminance of $4200cd/m^2$ at a current density of $440mA/cm^2$. The CIE (Commission International de l'Eclairage) coordinates are (0.319, 0.338) at an applied voltage of 10 V.

  • In this paper, the nonlinear cylindrical bending behavior of functionally graded nanocomposite plates reinforced by single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) is studied using an efficient and simple refined theory. This theory is based on assumption that the in-plane and transverse displacements consist of bending and shear components in which the bending components do not contribute toward shear forces and, likewise, the shear components do not contribute toward bending moments. The material properties of SWCNTs are assumed to be temperature-dependent and are obtained from molecular dynamics simulations. The material properties of functionally graded carbon nanotube-reinforced composites (FG-CNTCRs) are assumed to be graded in the thickness direction, and are estimated through a micromechanical model. The fundamental equations for functionally graded nanocomposite plates are obtained using the Von-Karman theory for large deflections and the solution is obtained by minimization of the total potential energy. The numerical illustrations concern the nonlinear bending response of FG-CNTRC plates under different sets of thermal environmental conditions, from which results for uniformly distributed CNTRC plates are obtained as comparators.

  • Acetanilide is a High Production Volume Chemical, which is produced about 2,300 tons/year in Korea as of 1998 survey. Most is used as an intermediate for synthesis of pharmaceuticals and dyes, and the chemical is one of seven chemicals of which human and environmental risk are being assessed by National Institute of Environmental Research under the frame of OECD SIDS program. The Atmospheric Oxidation Program for Microsoft Windows (AOPWIN) is used to estimates the rate constant for the atmospheric, gas-phase reaction between photochemically produced hydroxyl radicals and organic chemicals. It is also used to estimates the rate constant for the gas-phase reaction between ozone and olefinic/acetylenic compounds. The rate constants estimated by the program are then used to calculate atmospheric half-lives for organic compounds based upon average atmospheric concentrations of hydroxyl radicals and ozone. AOPWIN requires only a chemical structure to make these predictions. Structures are entered into AOPWIN by SMILES (Simplified Molecular Input Line Entry System) notations. In this study, one of environmental fate/distribution of the chemical elements, photodegradation of acetanilide was estimated using AOPWIN model based on SMILES notation and chemical name data.

  • EMA-co-DAMA were synthesized from 2-diethylaminoethyl metacrylate and ethylhexyl metacrylate in acrylmonomer. To facilitate water emulsification, acrylic copolymer was cationized by acetic acid to produce acetated acrylic copolymer. The structures of the synthesized copolymer and acetated copolymers were confirmed by IR, NMR, and molecular weight was measure by GPC, and C.H.N elemental analysis. Acetated acrylic copolymers were perfectly emulsified in water and showed increased emulsion stability. Polymer dispersion for cement modifier[(PDCM-PED) water proof agent of cement for concrete in building construction] was prepared by blending of the guaternized acrylic copolymer syndisized above, sodium silicate, sodium gluconate and oleic acid emulsion. The result with prepared polymer dispersion of cement modifier was examined, and it was found that excellent waterprooffing effect ; Water permeability ratio is 0.50 under the water pressure of $100g/cm^2$ and 0.60 under $3kg/cm^2$, and water absorption ratio is $0.42{\sim}0.50$ and $1.0{\sim}1.02$ compressive strength ratio at mixed of water/PDCM-PED is 50 times.

  • The well-characterized gram-positive bacterium Bacillus subtilis is an outstanding industrial candidate for protein expression owing to its single membrane and high capacity of secretion, simplifying the downstream processing of secretory proteins. During the last few years, there has been continuous progress in the illustration of secretion mechanisms and application of this robust host in various fields of life science, such as enzyme production, feed additives, and food and pharmaceutical industries. Here, we review the developments of Bacillus subtilis as a highly promising expression system illuminating strong chemical- and temperatureinducible and other types of promoters, strategies for ribosome-binding-site utilization, and the novel approach of signal peptide selection. Furthermore, we outline the main steps of the Sec pathway and the relevant elements as well as their interactions. In addition, we introduce the latest discoveries of Tat-related complex structures and functions and the countless applications of this full-folded protein secretion pathway. This review also lists some of the current understandings of ATP-binding cassette transporters. According to the extensive knowledge on the genetic modification strategies and molecular biology of Bacillus subtilis, we propose some suggestions and strategies for improving the yield of intended productions. We expect this to promote striking future developments in the optimization and application of this bacterium.

  • New electroluminescent materials based on anthracene chromophore with naphthylethenyl substituent, 9,10-bis($\alpha$-naphthylethenyl)anthracene (a-BNA), as well as four kinds of its derivatives were synthesized, and luminescent properties of these materials were investigated. Electrolumineecent(EL) emission band was discussed based on their substituent structure differences. It was found that the emission band strongly depends on the molecular structure of introduced substituent. It can be tuned from 557 nm to 591 nm by changing the substituent structures. On the other hand, the anthracene chromophore with bulky substituent possessed high melting point and they gave stable films through vacuum-sublimation. The double layer EL device of ITO/TPD/emission layer/Mg:Ag was employed, and exhibited efficient orange light originating from emitting materials. EL emission with a maximum luminance was observed in the b-BNA emitting material, : maximum luminance was about 8,060 cd $m^{-2}$ at an applied voltage of 10 V and current density of 680 $mA/cm^2$. In conclusion, the electroluminescent properties also showed good difference with their substituent structure.

  • The synthesis of N-methyl glucamine was performed in two step reaction. The first step involves the amination between methylamine and glucose in methane. The N-methyl glucamine was obtained by the reduction of using Ni catalyst under the high pressure. The second step was glucamide anionic derivatives synthesis from N-methyl glucamine, maleic anhydride, lauryl alcohol and laurylamine by Schotten Banmann reaction respectively. Their molecular structures of N-methyl glucamine and glucamide (EG-MAS and AC-MAS) were investigated by IR and $^{1}H-NMR$. Basic physical properties and biodegradability of there glucamide anionic surfactant was investigated. The range of cmc values determined by measurements of surface tention was $10^{-5}{\sim}10^{-4}mol/l$ and the surface tension of the aqueous solution revealed in the range $28{\sim}30$ dyne/cm and their biodegradability was very good in the pH $5{\sim}10$.

  • We characterized the cytoskeletal beta-actin (${\beta}$-ACT) gene (actb) and its 5'-upstream regulatory region in the Javanese ricefish Oryzias javanicus. The gene and protein structures were deduced from amino acid sequences of the actb gene and conserved in the teleost lineage. The O. javanicus actb gene has common transcription factor binding motifs in its regulatory region found in teleostean orthologues. Following quantitative reverse transcription-PCR, actb gene transcripts were detected in all tissues examined; however, the basal expression levels were different. During early development, O. javanicus actb mRNA levels showed a gradual increase and peaked between late somitogenesis and the heartbeat stage. Microinjection of O. javanicus embryos with the actb gene promoter-driven red fluorescent protein (RFP) gene reporter vector showed a ubiquitous distribution of RFP signals, although most exhibited a mosaic pattern of transgene expression. A small number of microinjected embryos displayed a wide distribution of RFP signals over their entire body, which resembled the expression pattern of endogenous actb. Data from this study provide a basis to develop a transgenic system with ubiquitous expression of foreign genes in O. javanicus.

  • Polyketides are an extensive class of secondary metabolites with diverse molecular structures and biological activities. A plasmid-based minimal polyketide synthase (PKS) expression cassette was constructed using a subset of actinorhodin (act) biosynthetic genes (actI-orfl, actI-orf2, actI-orf3, actIII, actⅦ, and actIV) from Streptomyces coelicolor, which specify the construction of an orange-fluorescent anthraquinone product aloesaponarin II, a type II polyketide compound derived from one acetyl coenzyme A and 7 malonyl coenzyme A extender units. This system was designed as an indicator pathway in S. parvulus to generate a hybrid type II polyketide compound via gene-specific replacement. The act ${\beta}-ketoacyl$ synthase unit (actI-orfl and actI-orf2) in the expression cassette was specifically replaced with oxytetracycline ${\beta}-ketoacyl$ synthase otcY-orfl and otcY-orf2). This plasmid-based hybrid PKS cassette generated a novel orange-fluorescent compound structurally different from aloesaponarin II in both S. lividans and S. parvulus. In addition, several additional distinctive blue-fluorescent compounds were detected, when this hybrid PKS cassette was expressed in S. coelicolor B78 (actI-orf2 mutant), implying that the expression of plasmid-based hybrid PKS cassette in Streptomyces species should be an efficient way of generating hybrid type II polyketide compounds.

  • Most of the previous algorithms focus on computing the convex hull for a set of points. In this paper, we present a method for approximating the convex hull for a set of spheres with various radii in discrete space. Computing the convex hull for a set of spheres is a base technology for many applications that study structural properties of molecules. We present a voxel map data structures, where the molecule is represented as a set of spheres, and corresponding algorithms. Based on CUDA programming for using the parallel architecture of GPU, our algorithm takes less than 40ms for computing the convex hull of 6,400 spheres in average.
