  • Field surveys and specimen collections of the rust fungal pathogen Gymnosporangium were carried out for 15 years from 1985 through 1999 in various locations of Korea. Macroscopic and microscopic examinations of morphological characteristics of aecia from the collected specimens revealed that Gymnosporangium globosum is the causal agent of American hawthorn rust disease on Crataegus pinnatifida and C. pinnatifida varmajor. The host plants are new for this rust fungus. G. globosum was found only in Gyeonggi and Chungbuk provinces, indicating that its distribution in Korea is limited. This is a first full description on morphological characters of aecia of G. globosum in Korea.

  • A fraction (CMEx-AH-${\beta}$) of water-soluble polysaccharides, showing selective antitumor activities, was isolated from the mycelia of solid cultured Agaricus blazei Murill by hot-water extraction, ethanol precipitation, and series of chromatography. Chemical characteristics of CMEx-AH-${\beta}$, were as follows: carbohydrate content, 48%; monosaccharide composition, Man:Glu:Gal (2:93:5); molecular weight, $2{\times}10^5$; uronic acid content, 6.2%. Fundamental structure of CMEx-AH-${\beta}$, was deduced as ${\beta}-(1\;{\rightarrow}\;6)$-D-glucan with ${\beta}-(1\;{\rightarrow}\;3)$-D-glucosidic side chains based on results of methylation and $^{13}C$ NMR spectroscopic analyses.

  • The characteristics of 3 inch wafer scale GaAs epitaxial wafer grown by molecular beam epitaxy for LSI process application were studied. The thickness and doping uniformity are characterized and discussed. The growth temperature and growth rate were $600^{\circ}C$ by pyrometer, and 1 $\mu$m/h, respectively. It was found that thickness and doping uniformity were 3.97% and 4.74% respectively across the full 3 inch diameter GaAs epitaxial layer. Also, ungated MESFETs have been fabricated and saturation current measurement showed 4.5% uniformity on 3 inch, epitaxial layer, but uniformity of threshold voltage increase up to 9.2% after recess process for MESFET device.

  • The physical properties of DMPC monolayer were made for dielectric relaxation phenomena by the detection of the surface pressures and displacements current. Lipid thin films were deposited by accumulation and the current was measured after the electric bias across the manufactured MIM device. It is found that the phospolipid monolayer of dielectric relaxation takes a little time and depend on the molecular area. When electric bias is applied across the manufactured MIM device by the deposition condition of phospolipid mono-layer, it wasn't breakdown when the higher electric field to impress by increase of deposition layers.

  • The molecularly imprinted polymers(MIPs) synthesized at various polymerization conditions were examined as ibuprofen receptors in terms of binding characteristics. The 4-vinylpyridine polymers had 1.2 times higher adsorption capability for (S)-(+)-ibuprofen than the methacrylic acid polymers. The methacrylic acid polymers synthesized by UV radiation had 1.9 times higher selectivity for (S)-(+)-ibuprofen compared to those by thermal initiation. Effects of various solvents for binding were also examined in this research. According to the Scatchard analysis, the (S)-(+)-ibuprofen artificial receptors had two different kinds of binding sites for (S)-(+)-ibuprofen while having only single kind of binding site for ketoprofen. The binding sites of (S)-(+)-ibuprofen, n were calculated as 4.3~4.9 $\mu$mol/g and the dissociation constants, $K_D$ were 0.68 mM for the specific binding.

  • The purpose of this paper is to develope an electron beam resist by the plasma polymerization. Plasma co-polymerized resist was prepared using an interelectrode gas-flow-type reactor. And then delineated pattern in the resist was developed with gas flow type reactor using Ar and O$_2$ gas as etching gas. We study about the effects of discharge power and mixing rate of the copolymerized thin film. The characteristics of molecular structure of thin film was investigated by FT-lR, DSC and GPC, and then was discussed in relation to its quality as a resist.

  • It is complicate problem to optimize removing natural organic matter (NOM) by activated carbon in drinking water treatment because the activated carbon has heterogeneous surface area and pore structure. Seven different coals based activated carbons which have different pore structures were used in the study. Sand filtered effluents which normally used as GAC adsorber influent were used. The molecular weight distribution showed that most of the NOM was bigger than 10,000Da. In this study, systematical approaches such as characteristics of surface area and pore volume were evaluated on NOM adsorption. Especially, the adsorption capacities for NOM were evaluated by effect of micro-pores and meso-pores in surface area and pore structure. The results show that the higher ratio of meso-pore compare to the micro-pore has not only the better adsorption capacities for NOM but also the higher strongly-adsorbable fraction. Therefore, the overall adsorption capacity is increased with higher meso-pore ratio with existing of reasonable micro-pore surface area and volume.

Chemical characteristics of PMEx-AH-${\beta}$ were as follows: carbohydrate content, 71%; monosaccharide composition, Man:Glu:Gal (9:64:27); molecular weight, $1-7{\times}10^4$; uronic acid content, 6.8%. Fundamental structure of PMEx-AH-${\beta}$ is deduced as ${\beta}$-($1{$\rightarrow}6$)-D-glucan with ${\beta}$-($1{\rightarow}3$)-D-glucosidic side chains based on methylation analysis.

  • Finasteride, ($5{\alpha}$, $17{\beta}$)-N-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-3-oxo-4-azaandrost-1-ene-17-carboxamide), is a 5a-reductase enzyme inhibitor. This enzyme converts testosterone to the more potent androgen, a-dihydrotestosterone. This molecules a logical medical treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), as it induced a reduction in serum dihydrotestosterone and prostatic specific antigen levels with a concomittant increase in blood testosterone concentration . Despite its widespread use, little has been published concerning its molecular properties. Therefore, in this study, in order to explain characteristics of finasteride, total energy, net charge, vibrational mode of melatonin are calculated by PM3 methods of HyperCam 8.0.

  • Cell membrane proteins play crucial roles in the cell's molecular interaction with its environment and within itself. They consist of membrane-bound proteins and many types of transmembrane (TM) proteins such as receptors, transporters, channel proteins, and enzymes. Membrane proteomes of cellular organisms reveal some characteristics in their global topological distribution according to their evolutionary positions, and show their own information transfer complexity. Predicted transmembrane segments (TMSs) in membrane proteomes with HMMTOP showed near power-law distribution and frequency characteristics in 6-TMS and 7-TMS proteins in prokaryotes and eukaryotes, respectively. This reaffirms the important roles of membrane receptors in cellular communication and biological evolutionary history.
