  • Three aetideid copepods collected from the East Sea of Korea are described: Bradyidius angustus (Tanaka, 1957), Gaetanus minutus (Sars, 1907), and Aetideus acutus Farran, 1929. The former two species are new to the Korean copepod fauna. The sequences of cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 were determined to be the molecular characteristics of these three species.

  • Recently, domestic silk fibroin (SF) hydrolysates have been studied intensively by several researchers. The functional properties of domestic SF hydrolysates depended on the hydrolysis method and the molecular weight of SF. However, the functional characteristics of wild SF hydrolysates have yet to reported. (omitted)

  • The characteristics controlled drug release have been studied for biodegradable polymer matrix. Polymer matrix was prepared from glycerine, prednisolone and dextran. Mathematical analysis of the data showed that the release behavior actually conformed to the Higuchi's diffusion controlled model. The release time was increased as drug loading doses increased, whereas decreased as glycerine concentration increased. The release rate did not change by varying molecular weight of dextran.

  • Soft rot in apple caused by Rhizopus oryzae was found for the first time in Korea. A detailed description of the specimen is given along with its internal transcribed spacer rDNA sequence. The fungus was identified as Rhizopus oryzae based on the mycological characteristics, molecular data, and pathogenicity testing.

  • A purple non-sulfur photosynthetic bacteria which evolved molecular hydrogen efficiently from glucose in the presence of low concentration of NH4+ under light illuminated anaerobic condition was isolated from mud samples in Korea. This bacteria was identified on Rhodobacter sphaeroides KS 56 based on the morphological, cultural and physiological characteristics.

  • The acetone-butanol fermentation by C. acetobutylicum has gained increasing attention for the following reasons. First, the finite supply of petrochemical resources, combined with increasing concern over global environmental effects and the unstable nature of the price of petroleum has renewed interest in the development of fermentation technology that allows utilzation of biomass wastes for the production of alcohol. Second, it serves as excellent model system for understading the regulation and molecular biology of tightly regulated complex primary metabolism, and for applications of metabolic engineering. In this review various aspects of acetone-butanol fermentation by C. acetobutylicm including strain and fermentation characteristics, enzyme regulation, and solvent formation mechanism, and product recovery and summarized.
