  • $\alpha$-sexithienyl($\alpha$-6T) thin films were deposited by Organic Molecular Beam Deposition(OMBD) technique, where the $\alpha$-6T was synthesized and purified by the sublimation method. The thin films of the $\alpha$-6T were deposited under various deposition conditions. The effects of deposition rate, substrate temperature. and vacuum pressure an the formation of these films have been studied. The molecular orientations of $\alpha$-6T films were investigated with the polarized electronic absorption spectroscopy. The molecules in the $\alpha$-6T film deposited at a low deposition rate under a high vacuum were aligned almost perpendicular to the substrate. The film deposited at an elevated substrate temperature (~9 $O^{\circ}C$) showed higher conductivity than the film deposited at room temperature.

  • Enteropathogenic Yersina enterocolitica is an important cause of human and animal disease. Phenotypic and genotypic characteristics currently used to identify Yersinia enterocolitica are not necessarily sufficient to differentiate pathogenic from non-pathogenic strains or to analyze the epidemiology of yersiniae at a molecular level. To improve the characterization of Yersinia enterocolitica, A total of 65 isolates of Yersinia enterocolitica were examined with bioserotyping, antibiotic susceptibilities, PFGE, PCR-ribotyping. Genomic DNA pattern generated by PFGE are highly specific for different strains of an organism and have significant value in epidemiologic investigations. The PFGE analysis of Not I-digested chromosomal DNA of Y. enterocolitica were performed with a CHEF Mapper(Bio-Rad, USA). Not I generated 19 restriction endonuclease digestion profiles(REDP). PCR-ribotyping, performed with primers complementry to conserved regions of 16S and 23S rRNA gene, generated 13 ribotypes. PCR-ribotyping can be considered a good technich for subtyping strains of Y.enterocolitica.

  • Fungal endophytes are microfungi that live in plants without causing apparent symptoms of infection. This study was conducted to identify endophytic fungi isolated from leaves of coniferous trees in Bohyeon Mountain of Korea. We collected leaves of two species of coniferous trees, Pinus densiflora and Pinus koraiensis, from 11 sites in the study area. A total 58 isolates were obtained and identified using molecular and morphological characteristics. Four species of endophytic fungi were isolated from P. densiflora: Lophodermium conigenum, Leotiomycetes sp., Septoria pini-thunbergii, and Polyporales sp., while two fungal species were isolated from P. koraiensis: Eurotiomycetes sp. and Rhytismataceae sp. The most frequently isolated species were L. conigenum and S. pini-thunbergii.

  • A previously unrecorded species, Metacordyceps chlamydosporia KNU14-22, was isolated from soil in Korea. Identification of the fungal species was based on morphological and molecular characteristics. This species has not been previously reported in Korea and herein we present data with detailed descriptions and figures.

  • Detailed surface characteristics of polymer films have been investigated by atomistic molecular dynamics simulations and NEXAFS spectroscopy experiments. The geometric confinement of the surfaces and the necessity to minimize the surface energy lead to the significant molecular organization and orientation in polymer surfaces, with their properties strongly depending upon the atomistic monomer structures. As compared with polymers, oligomeric electronic materials are much more readily aligned by employing various surface anchoring forces, rendering them highly attractive as polarized-light emitting materials and active semiconducting materials in thin film transistors.

  • Triphenylamine derivatives play important roles as hole transporting materials in organic light emitting devices. However, low molecular weight triphenylamine derivatives show low glass transition temperature and aggregation behavior, and the vapor deposition step of low molecular weight materials is incompatible with large area display fabrication. Conventional polymer PEDOT-PSS HTL has serious drawbacks such as the ITO anode corrosion, poor surface energy match with aromatic EMLs. To solve these problems, we introduced crosslinkable units to triphenylamine-based polymers to make insoluble HTL by thermal curing following spin-coating. Electrochemical and optical properties of the new hole transporting materials were investigated. In addition, the device characteristics obtained with new hole transporting polymers were investigated in details.

  • The changes in gel characteristics of soy protein as a result of various reagents that alter specific interactions which affect the formation and textural properties of gels, were studied. The reagents were added to 15% soy protein solutions prior to heat treatment. The gels were not formed with urea, indicating that hydrogen bonds significantly contributed to the formation and hardness of soy protein gel. Hydrophobic interactions and disulfide bonds compensated for hydrogen bonds and the contributions of electrostatic interactions to gel hardness are relatively insignificant. The farce primarily responsible for gel cohesiveness appeared to be disulfide bonds, because a significant decrease in cohesiveness was found only with the presence of N-ethylmaleimide. Adhesiveness decreased only with the addition of urea, and thus the contribution of hydrogen bonding to adhesiveness of gel could be concluded to be resent. However, adhesiveness was suggested to be interpreted not only wile molecular forces involved in gel formation but also with hydration properties of protein.

  • The purpose of this study was to pursue the biosynthesis of proteins of human and bovine periodontal ligaments in vitro system. The excised periodontal ligaments from human and bovine were incubated in Krebs-glucose medium containing $^3H$-proline. After incubation the incubated periodontal ligaments were homogenized and the proteins were treated with 0.1%sodium dodecyl sulfate and $\beta$-mercaptoethanol. Separation of the protein fractions was performed with agarose gel column chromatography and SDS acrylamide gel electrophoresis. The results indicated as follow: 1. Only a small percentage of $^3H$-proline incorporated into proteins was hydroxylated to $^3H$-hydroxyproline. 2. The labeled proteins in periodontal ligaments showed a wide distribution of molecular weight. But only small amounts of labeled protein were found that were characteristics of the molecular weight of collagen. 3. In all of the combined fractions of gel filtration, the degree of hydroxylation was small.

  • In mammalian cells, aberrant transcripts harboring a premature termination codon (PTC) can be generated by abnormal or inefficient biogenesis of mRNAs or by somatic mutation. Truncated polypeptides synthesized from these aberrant transcripts could be toxic to normal cellular functions. However, mammalian cells have evolved sophisticated mechanisms for monitoring the quality of mRNAs. The faulty transcripts harboring PTC are subject to nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD), nonsense-mediated translational repression (NMTR), nonsense-associated alternative splicing (NAS), or nonsense-mediated transcriptional gene silencing (NMTGS). In this review, we briefly outline the molecular characteristics of each pathway and suggest mRNA quality control mechanisms as a means to regulate normal gene expression.

  • Recent progress in the development of non-invasive imaging technologies continues to strengthen the role of molecular imaging biological research. These tools have been validated recently in variety of research models, and have been shown to provide continuous quantitative monitoring of the location(s), magnitude, and time-variation of gene expression. This article reviews the principles, characteristics, categories and the use of radionuclide reporter gene imaging technologies as they have been used in imaging cell trafficking, imaging gene therapy, imaging endogenous gene expression and imaging molecular interactions. The studios published to date demonstrate that reporter gene imaging technologies will help to accelerate pre-clinical model validation as well as allow for clinical monitoring of human diseases.
